The LPAC and ARD committee determine in advance whether to provide a two-day administration of LAT TAKS M reading or ELA on April (or May for grades 5 and 8). In rare instances, a student taking a LAT administration may be designated by the LPAC to take regular TAKS or TAKS M tests in other subjects. In such cases, the student s testing schedule may need to be adjusted to enable the student to take all necessary tests. Tests scheduled the week of April 25 must be completed between April 25 and April 29, and May testing for affected students must be completed between May 16 and May 18. ii 2011 TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS

GENERAL INFORMATION Introduction These directions contain word-for-word scripts that test administrators must read when administering TAKS Modified (TAKS M) tests. Please read this introduction carefully, as it contains information that applies to every. Information that is specific to a subject-area is included in the script for that test. These test administration directions must be used in conjunction with the TAKS M General Test Administrator Manual. In addition, all test administrators must have both the directions and the TAKS M General Test Administrator Manual in the testing room for each testing session. General Information Information regarding linguistically accommodated testing (LAT) administrations of TAKS M tests for eligible immigrant English language learners (ELLs) is found in Appendix A of this manual. Features of TAKS M TAKS M is an alternate assessment based on modified academic achievement standards. TAKS M is designed for students receiving special education services who meet participation requirements for this assessment. The TAKS M tests cover the same grade-level content as TAKS, but TAKS M tests have been changed in format (larger font, fewer items per page, etc.) and test design (fewer answer choices, simpler vocabulary and sentence structure, etc.). TAKS M is administered in English for the same grades and subjects as TAKS, including Student Success Initiative (SSI) retest opportunities. However, TAKS M is not a requirement for graduation. Therefore, it is not considered an exit level test, and there are no grade 11 retest opportunities. TAKS M is not available in Spanish. Important Procedural Information The following topics are listed here as reminders of important procedures that must be followed so that all students eligible for testing have an equal opportunity to demonstrate their academic achievement. Refer to the TAKS M General Test Administrator Manual for the complete description of the general responsibilities of test administrators. Test Security Test administrators are responsible for test security and confidentiality in the testing room. If a situation arises that you do not know how to resolve, contact your campus coordinator. Report in writing any violations of test security and confidentiality to your campus coordinator. Testing Day The TAKS M tests are untimed. Students should be given all the time they need to respond to each test item TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS 3

General Information Educational Materials Required for Testing Before begins, please ensure that each student has two No. 2 pencils with erasers and a test booklet. Students must use No. 2 pencils to mark on their scorable documents. They may write in their test booklets if necessary. Dictionary and Thesaurus Use The chart below will help you determine when English-language dictionaries and thesauruses must be provided. Students must be provided appropriate tools (e.g., dictionaries and thesauruses) during assessments so that their performance on the test is a more valid and reliable indicator of what they know and can do. Grade Dictionary/Thesaurus Use for TAKS M Writing: Required for written composition only; not allowed for revising and editing section. Reading: Required for entire test. ELA: Required for reading and written composition only; not allowed for revising and editing section. ELA: Required for reading and written composition only; not allowed for revising and editing section. Note these policies regarding the use of dictionaries and thesauruses during testing: There must be at least one dictionary for every five students. It is recommended that there be one thesaurus for every five students, if possible. Students may also use a combination dictionary/thesaurus for these assessments. An English as a second language (ESL) dictionary, which uses simple English and pictures to define words, may be provided for ELL students taking TAKS M tests only when reference materials must be provided. (Provisions for use of foreignlanguage reference materials and ESL dictionaries differ for LAT administrations of TAKS M. LAT information is found in Appendix A of the appropriate TAKS M directions.) Students taking a braille version of a test may use electronic dictionaries and thesauruses only when reference materials must be provided. If a student needs a dictionary or thesaurus as an accommodation, refer to the Accommodations Manual TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS

Calculator Use The chart below indicates when calculators must be provided. Students must be provided appropriate tools (e.g., calculators) during assessments so that their performance on the test is a more valid and reliable indicator of what they know and can do. General Information Grade 9 10 (including grade 10 LAT) 11 Calculator Use for TAKS M Mathematics: Graphing calculators without QWERTY keyboard or computer algebra system (CAS) required. Mathematics: Graphing calculators without QWERTY keyboard or computer algebra system (CAS) required. Science: Four-function, scientific, or graphing calculator without QWERTY keyboard or computer algebra system (CAS) required. Mathematics: Graphing calculators without QWERTY keyboard or computer algebra system (CAS) required. Science: Four-function, scientific, or graphing calculator without QWERTY keyboard or computer algebra system (CAS) required. Note these policies regarding the use of calculators during testing: Students may use their own calculators instead of the ones provided by the district. District/campus personnel are responsible for ensuring that both district-supplied and student-supplied calculators are cleared both before and after testing. All types of memory, including standard memory, RAM, ROM, and flash ROM, must be cleared to factory default both before and after testing. Any programs or applications must be removed or disabled prior to testing. For specific assistance in effectively preparing calculators for use during testing, contact the calculator manufacturer. For mathematics tests, each student must have a graphing calculator to use throughout the entire administration. For science tests, there should be at least one calculator for every five students. If students share a calculator during a science test, the memory must be cleared by a test administrator after each student uses it. Students taking a braille version of a test may use an audio-graphing calculator (AGC) when calculators must be provided. Students taking a braille version of a test at any grade level may use a speech-output calculator if documented in a student s IEP. If a student needs a calculation device as an accommodation, refer to the Accommodations Manual TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS 5

General Information Test Accommodations Information about some testing accommodations is included below. Refer to the Accommodations Manual for additional testing accommodations. Oral Administration Before conducting an oral administration, test administrators should review the information presented in the Accommodations Manual and Appendix B of this manual. For students who are deaf or hard of hearing and eligible for a signed administration, specific guidelines for signing test content for a state assessment are included in Appendix C of the TAKS M General Test Administrator Manual. Any test administrator conducting an oral administration must receive additional training in the procedures specific to an oral administration and sign a separate section (Section #3) of the test administrator security oath. Supplemental Aids The use of a supplemental aid must be documented in the student s IEP and must be routinely used in instruction and testing. Any supplemental aids that have been written on during testing must be destroyed. Do not return supplemental aids with any testing materials. Transcribing Transcription may be required if a scorable document becomes unusable, as an accommodation, or for a braille or large-print administration. For more information about the transcribing process, refer to pages of the TAKS M General Test Administrator Manual. Braille and Large Print Before administering a braille or large-print test, test administrators must review the information presented in the Accommodations Manual and Appendix B of the TAKS M General Test Administration Manual. Active Monitoring Test administrators must be actively engaged in observing students behavior at all times during the administration of state assessments. While students are working, test administrators should move about the room to confirm that students are working only on the subject-area test being administered and that they do not have materials available that are not allowed, such as cell phones or other personal electronic devices. Principals and campus testing coordinators must confirm that test administrators are actively monitoring in each testing room. Remind students regularly, either as a group or individually, to record their responses in the scorable test booklet (grade 3) or on the answer document (grades 4 through 11). Test administrators may say, Remember to fill in the ovals for all your answers in your test booklet (grade 3) or Remember to fill in the ovals for all your answers on your answer document (grades 4 through 11). However, test administrators may not view or discuss individual test items or responses with students or with other adults unless specifically instructed to do so by the procedures outlined in the materials TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS

Before a student leaves the testing room, the test administrator must check the completed test booklet (grade 3) or answer document (grades 4 through 11) to be sure the student has recorded his or her answers as instructed. If the student has not done so, the test administrator should say, You have not recorded all of your answers in your test booklet. Please go back and mark your answers in it now. (grade 3) or You have not recorded all of your answers on your answer document. Please go back and mark your answers on it now. (grades 4 through 11). The testing materials should then be returned so that the student may record his or her answers. Also, make sure that grade 3 students have not skipped any pages in the test booklet. You may look at scorable documents only to see whether responses are recorded, but you may not examine or comment on individual responses. As an accommodation, some students may use another method of response, such as circling answers in the test booklet rather than filling in the ovals. In these situations, the test administrator must also check to make sure that the student has responded in a way that allows for transcription. General Information Students may read books or be allowed to leave the room after they have finished. If they remain in the testing room, remind them not to talk while others are still working. Breaks Test administrators may allow students to take brief breaks in the testing room during a test session. However, breaks are not mandatory; test administrators may use their own judgment in determining whether any are necessary. During breaks, students must not discuss the content of the test, and the test booklets must be closed with answer documents inside. At the discretion of the test administrator, students may be allowed to take restroom breaks one at a time or as an entire class. If the entire class breaks at the same time, follow the security procedures outlined in Lunch. Lunch If testing continues into the normal lunch period, students should be allowed to break for lunch. Students must place their answer documents inside their test booklets. Collect the booklets and place them in locked storage. Students must remain together as a group and be closely monitored by a trained test administrator to ensure that they do not discuss the content of the test. Emergencies Occasionally an emergency will arise, and a student may need to leave the testing room for a brief time. No test materials may be taken from the room. If the student returns, the campus coordinator and the test administrator involved should determine whether confidentiality had been maintained, and if the student should continue testing. If a student cannot continue testing, the district must determine if the score code on the student s scorable document should be marked S (Score) or O (Other). You may call the TEA Student Assessment Division for guidance, if needed, at Changing Testing Rooms Some students may need more time than others to complete a test. As long as security is not breached, students may be moved to another testing room. These students must place their answer documents inside their test booklets. Collect the test booklets, accompany the students 2011 TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS 7

General Information to their new testing room while ensuring that they do not discuss the content of the test, and then redistribute the booklets once students are ready to continue testing. Students may NOT carry their own test booklets to the new testing room. The new testing area should be properly prepared to receive the students, including removing or covering all instructional aids. Collecting and Organizing Materials Make sure that the name of each student is written on his or her test booklet before collecting the test booklets. Before students leave the testing room, count the test booklets to make sure all booklets have been returned. Be sure to collect all separate mathematics and science charts and science rulers when you collect the test booklets. Destroy any charts or rulers that have been written on inadvertently. The remaining charts and rulers may be used as instructional tools. Complete the SCORE CODE field for each student s test. If a student received accommodations on a TAKS M test, you must mark this information in the ACCOMMODATIONS (FOR ALL PROGRAMS) field of the test booklet or answer document. Refer to Activity 2 of the TAKS M General Test Administrator Manual for detailed instructions for completing the SCORE CODE and ACCOMMODATIONS (FOR ALL PROGRAMS) fields of the TAKS M scorable documents. At no time should you erase stray marks or darken answer-choice ovals on students test booklets or answer documents. Returning Test Materials Return your test materials to the campus coordinator after the test session has been completed (for instructions, refer to Activity 8 of the TAKS M General Test Administrator Manual). The campus coordinator will verify that you have returned all testing materials assigned to you, as recorded on the Materials Control Form, and will initial the In box for the appropriate day. UNAUTHORIZED VIEWING, DUPLICATION, DISCUSSION, OR SCORING OF SECURE TEST MATERIALS IS NOT PERMITTED AT ANY TIME TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS

ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS GRADE 9 READING These grade 9 reading test instructions apply to all 2011 TAKS M grade 9 reading test administrations. The test administrator should keep the following points in mind when administering a TAKS M reading test or the reading selections of the TAKS M English language arts (ELA) tests: The selections are divided into parts followed by questions based on those parts of the selection. Questions that require understanding of the entire selection appear at the end of the last part. The test administrator may read the directions that appear in the test booklet that instruct the student to use the whole selection to answer the questions. Reading aloud the test questions and answer choices to students is an accommodation that should be determined by the ARD committee based on the needs of the student and whether the student routinely receives this accommodation in classroom instruction. Test questions and answer choices may either be read aloud to a student by the test administrator or read independently by the student. Specific information about this accommodation can be found in the Accommodations Manual. The test administrator will need a test booklet from which to read aloud the prereading text and, if applicable, the test questions and answer choices. Pre-reading text marked with a speaker icon appears at the beginning of each selection. The icon indicates that the pre-reading text should be read aloud to the students. The test administrator may, at a student s request, read aloud a word from the selection, questions, or answer choices, if the word appears in the pre-reading text. The test administrator may read aloud the pre-reading text only and, if applicable, the questions and answer choices. The test administrator may NOT read aloud the selection while students are reading it independently. The test administrator may read aloud the pre-reading text and, if applicable, each test question and answer choice as many times as necessary. However, the prereading text may be reread only before students begin reading the selection. The pre-reading text, test questions, and answer choices must not be rephrased or clarified. Voice inflection must be kept neutral while reading aloud the pre-reading text, test questions, and answer choices. Students may use dictionaries during the grade 9 reading test. All security measures outlined in the materials must be followed. directions Grade TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS 11

The test administrator should read aloud the pre-reading text at the beginning of each reading selection. If students will be reading the test questions and answer choices independently, then the test administrator should instruct the students to read independently one part of the selection at a time and answer the questions based on that part before going on to read the next part. The test administrator should NOT follow the administration directions in the green-shaded areas on the following pages. directions Grade 9 If the test questions and answer choices will be read aloud to the students, then the test administrator should instruct the students to read independently the first part of the selection. When all students have completed reading part of a selection, the test administrator will read aloud the test questions and answer choices based on that part. On the following pages, directions in the green-shaded areas are for test administrators who will be reading all of the questions and answer choices to the students. If the test administrator will be reading the questions and answer choices upon request only, then the test administrator should NOT follow the administration directions in the greenshaded areas. Schools should take into consideration the level of reading support students are receiving when grouping students for testing. Students should stop working when they reach the stop sign at the end of the questions for each selection. When all students have completed the test questions for a selection, the test administrator should read the pre-reading text at the beginning of the next selection. Read aloud WORD FOR WORD the material printed in bold type following the word. You may repeat the directions as many times as needed. The material in italics is information meant for you and should not be read aloud to students. Today you will be taking a reading test. It is important for you to try to do your best. Keep your pencil on your desk until I tell you that you may use it. Now I am going to give each of you a test booklet and an answer document. When you get your test booklet, do not open it, write on it, or break the seal on the edge of your reading test until I ask you to do so. Do not fill in any information on your answer document unless I ask you to do so. If you have any questions while I am passing out the test booklets, please let me know. Give a test booklet and an answer document to each student. Make sure that each student receives the answer document with his or her name on it. Print your first and last name in the space marked STUDENT NAME at the top of your test booklet. When students are ready, continue. On the back of each test booklet, there is a printed number. Each booklet has a different number. This number has nine digits followed by a hyphen and another digit. You need to look at only the first nine digits of the number. Hold up your test booklet and point to the test booklet number on the back TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS

Now find the words TEST BOOKLET # at the top of your answer document. Point to TEST BOOKLET # on the answer document given to you for demonstration purposes. When students have located this section, continue. Copy the nine-digit number from the back of your test booklet into the boxes beside the words TEST BOOKLET # on your answer document. Be sure to copy this number exactly as it appears. Do not copy the hyphen or the digit to the right of the hyphen. If you have any questions, please let me know. Monitor students closely while they copy the test booklet number. When students are ready, continue. Now turn your answer document over. Look at the honor statement located at the bottom of the page. This statement says that you will not give or receive unauthorized assistance during the test. Unauthorized assistance means giving or receiving answers to test questions from someone else. Students may not help other students with any test questions. Only the test administrator is allowed to provide or repeat test directions to students. directions Grade 9 If you cheat on the test, your test may be invalidated, which means that your test will not be scored. Now please read and sign the honor statement. If a student asks if he or she must sign the honor statement, tell the student, That decision is up to you. Signing the honor statement is not required, but I want you to know that you are expected to follow the testing rules even if you do not sign it. It is not the responsibility of the test administrator to check to see if students have signed the honor statement. When students have had time to complete the honor statement, continue. Look at your test booklet. It is closed by a seal on the right side. Use your test booklet and demonstrate as you read the following. To break the seal, pull up on the red tab on the edge of the test booklet. The red tab will come off easily. If you have any questions or need any help, please let me know. Assist any student who is having difficulty. When students are ready, continue. Now look at your answer document. Turn it over and find the word READING. Below the word READING, there are some columns of ovals. Does everyone see where these are? This is where you will mark your answers TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS 13

Using your answer document, point to this section. To answer a question, fill in an oval on your answer document. Mark only one oval for each question. Mark your answers very carefully and make them dark and neat. If you want to change an answer, completely erase your first choice. Then fill in the oval for your new choice. You may take notes in your test booklet. You may use a dictionary during this reading test. directions Grade 9 Now open your test booklet to the beginning of the reading test on page 3. Move around the room to assist any student having difficulty finding the page. When all students are ready, continue. On this test you will read the selections on your own, but before you start reading each selection, I will read aloud a short paragraph that describes the selection. If you want me to reread one of these paragraphs, you may let me know. As you read a selection, you may ask me to repeat any word that I read in the paragraph. If you are reading aloud the questions/answer choices to students, skip to the paragraph in the green-shaded box and begin reading. If you are NOT reading the questions/answer choices, continue reading below, but skip the paragraph in the green-shaded box. Each reading selection is divided into parts. After you read one part, answer the questions that go with that part before reading the next part. When you finish reading an entire selection and answering the questions that go with it, you will see a stop sign at the bottom of the page. Please stop at that page and wait for me to read aloud the paragraph that describes the next selection. While you wait, you may check over your work. Are there any questions? Each reading selection is divided into parts. After you read one part, I will read aloud all the questions and answer choices that go with that part. You will then answer those questions before reading the next part of the selection. If you want me to read a question or an answer choice again, you may let me know. Are there any questions? Answer all questions. When students are ready, continue. You will have all the time you need today to complete the reading test. You may check over all your answers after you have finished, but do not open or work in any other section of your test booklet. Be sure to mark only one answer on your answer document for each question. If you do not know the answer to a question, choose the answer you think might be correct. Remember you may write in your test booklet if you would like to take notes. While you work on the test, I will move quietly around the room to make sure you are following directions and working on your own TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS

I cannot help you answer any test questions. I can only help you with questions about the directions. I can read a word to you if it is in the paragraph that describes the selection. Are there any questions? Answer all questions. When students are ready, continue. You are not allowed to answer any questions related to the content of the test itself. You may, however, repeat any word from the pre-reading text if a student requests this during testing. If a student asks a question that you are not permitted to answer, you may respond, for example, I can t answer that for you; just do the best you can. If there are no more questions, then turn to page 5 in your test booklet where you will see a drawing of a person speaking. This drawing means that I will read the title and the paragraph to you. Follow along in your test booklet as I read aloud. Make sure that all students are on the correct page in their booklets and then read aloud the pre-reading text. directions Grade 9 If you are reading aloud the questions/answer choices to students, skip to the greenshaded box and begin reading the administration directions for the remainder of the test. If you are NOT reading the questions/answer choices to students, do NOT read the text in the green-shaded area; the administration directions for the remainder of the test end before the text in the green-shaded area. Now turn the page. Read the first part of the selection on your own and then mark your answers to the questions for that part. Remember that as you read the selections, questions, and answer choices, you may ask me to reread any of the words that are in the paragraph I just read. When you have answered all questions for one part, read the next part and answer those questions. Stop after answering all the questions for this selection. There is a stop sign in the bottom-right corner of the page. Then wait quietly for me to give you further instructions. You may check over your work while you wait. You may begin. Allow students enough time to finish the items for the first selection. While the students work, move around the room to see that they are following directions and marking all their answers in the appropriate section of the answer document. When students are ready, read the pre-reading text for the next selection. Make sure that students are following along on the correct page and continue the process of reading the pre-reading text aloud, prompting students to read each part of the selection independently, and giving plenty of time for students to answer questions until you reach the last prereading text of the test. When you reach the pre-reading text for the last selection on the test, read the next direction TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS 15

Now turn to the next page in your test booklet where you will see the paragraph that describes the last selection on the test. Before I read this paragraph, I am going to give you some more directions. directions Grade 9 Stop after you answer the last question on the reading test. There is a stop sign in the bottom-right corner of the page. You may check over all your answers after you have finished. Be sure to erase any extra marks that you might have accidentally made on your answer document. When you have finished, close your test booklet. I will collect your test booklet and answer document. Please sit quietly and do not talk or disturb others who are still working. Are there any questions? Answer all questions. If there are no more questions, then I will read the paragraph that describes the last selection. Follow along as I read it. Read aloud the pre-reading text. Now you may begin reading the last selection. Be sure to give students all the time they need to complete the test and to check over their work before collecting the test booklets and answer documents. The test administrator must read and be familiar with the following directions prior to administering this test. Keep in mind that the reading test consists of several reading selections that are broken into parts. Each part of a selection has one or more questions associated with it. You will need to repeat certain directions until you get to the: last question of a part, last question in a selection, or last question of the test. As you are administering the test, you need to be aware of whether a question is the last in a part, last in a selection, or the last on the test. Read the following directions after reading aloud the pre-reading text for each selection: Now turn the page. Read the first part of the selection on your own, but do not answer any of the questions until I read them to you. Remember, as you read the selection, you may ask me to reread any of the words that are in the paragraph I just read. While you are waiting for me to read the questions and answer choices, you may reread that part of the selection. You may begin reading. Make sure that all students are on the correct page in their booklets and allow them enough time to read the first part of the selection. When all students have finished reading, continue TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS

Before reading aloud the question(s) and answer choices that follow a part, read this direction: Follow along as I read the question and answer choices to you. Then answer the question. When everyone has found the question, read aloud the question and answer choices to students from your test booklet. You will continue to read aloud all of the questions and answer choices for this part, making sure that all students answer each question before you read aloud the next question. If this is the only question in a part, read the next direction in addition to the one you just read. Before reading the last question in any part, read this direction: After you answer the question, go on and read the next part of the selection on your own. After you finish reading, wait for me to read aloud the next question. (You may need to remind students to go on and read the next part when they finish answering the question.) directions Grade 9 When all students have finished reading the part, read the question and answer choices to students from your test booklet. If this is the last question of a reading selection, read this direction: There is a stop sign at the bottom-right corner of the page. This is the last question for this selection. Stop after you answer it. Then wait quietly for me to give you further instructions. You may check over your work while you are waiting. Now I will read the last question for this selection. When everyone has found the question, read the question and answer choices to students from your test booklet. Follow this process of reading aloud the pre-reading text for each selection, allowing students to read the selection on their own, and reading the questions and answer choices aloud for each selection in the test booklet. When students are ready, read the pre-reading text for the next selection, making sure that students are following along on the correct page in their booklets. When you come to the last question on the reading test, read the next direction: Stop after you answer the last question on the reading test. Answer all questions TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS 17

If there are no more questions, then I will read the last question on the test. Follow along as I read it. Read the last question. 23 ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS GRADE 9 MATHEMATICS These grade 9 mathematics instructions apply to all 2011 TAKS M grade 9 mathematics test administrations. Each student must have a graphing calculator to use throughout the TAKS M grade 9 mathematics test. Refer to page 43 of the TAKS M General Test Administrator Manual for information concerning the types of graphing calculators permitted and instructions for clearing all types of memory both before and after testing. ORAL ADMINISTRATION IN MATHEMATICS If you have been directed to provide an oral administration of the TAKS M grade 9 mathematics test to an eligible student, refer to Appendix B for instructions. directions Grade 9 Read aloud WORD FOR WORD the material printed in bold type following the word. You may repeat the directions as many times as needed. The material in italics is information meant for you and should not be read aloud to students. Today you will be taking a mathematics test. It is important for you to try to do your best. Keep your pencil on your desk until I tell you that you may use it. Now I am going to give each of you a test booklet, an answer document, and a separate mathematics chart. When you get your test booklet, do not open it, write on it, or break the seal on the edge of your mathematics test until I ask you to do so. Do not fill in any information on your answer document unless I ask you to do so. If you have any questions while I am passing out the test booklets, please let me know. Give a test booklet, an answer document, and a mathematics chart to each student. Make sure that each student receives the answer document with his or her name on it. Be sure to distribute the appropriate mathematics chart; it has the TAKS logo in the top-left corner and Grades 9, 10, and Exit Level at the top of the chart. Print your first and last name in the space marked STUDENT NAME at the top of your test booklet. When students are ready, continue. On the back of each test booklet, there is a printed number. Each booklet has a different number. This number has nine digits followed by a hyphen and another digit. You need to look at only the first nine digits of the number TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS 19

Hold up a student s test booklet and point to the test booklet number on the back. Now find the words TEST BOOKLET # at the top of your answer document. Point to TEST BOOKLET # on the answer document given to you for demonstration purposes. When students have located this section, continue. directions Grade 9 Copy the nine-digit number from the back of your test booklet into the boxes beside the words TEST BOOKLET # on your answer document. If you cheat on the test, your test may be invalidated, which means that your test will not be scored. Use a student s test booklet and, without breaking the seal, demonstrate as you read the following. To break the seal, pull up on the red tab on the edge of your test booklet. The red tab will come off easily. If you have any questions or need any help, please let me know. Assist any student who is having difficulty. When students are ready, continue TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS

Look at the mathematics chart on pages 5 and 6 in your test booklet. You may use this chart or your separate mathematics chart when solving problems. Show students the separate mathematics chart. Notice that the mathematics chart in your test booklet does not have rulers on the edges. Your separate mathematics chart has a metric ruler on its left edge and a customary ruler on the right. You should use these rulers for questions on which you have to measure. You are not allowed to write on your separate mathematics chart. You may take notes or work problems in your test booklet or on the graph paper at the end of the mathematics section. You may use a graphing calculator during the test. We are going to answer a sample question and practice marking answers before you begin working on your mathematics test. Turn over your answer document and find the word MATHEMATICS. Directly below the word MATHEMATICS, there is a row of ovals labeled SAMPLE. Does everyone see where these are? This is where you will mark your answer for the sample question. directions Grade 9 Using your answer document, point to this section. To answer a question, fill in an oval on your answer document. Mark only one oval for each question. Mark your answers very carefully and make them dark and neat. If you want to change an answer, completely erase your first choice. Then fill in the oval for your new choice. Now turn to page 7 and find the word DIRECTIONS at the top. Look at the directions above the sample question and follow along as I read them aloud. Move around the room to assist any student having difficulty finding the page. When all students are ready, continue. Read the question and choose the best answer. Then fill in the correct answer on your answer document. After you read the sample question, mark the answer you choose on your answer document. The sample as it appears in students test booklets follows TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS 21

DIRECTIONS Read the question and choose the best answer. Then fill in the correct answer on your answer document. SAMPLE directions Grade 9 According to a paint label, 1 gallon of paint will cover 400 square feet of wall space. How many gallons of paint are needed to cover 2800 square feet of wall space? A B 28 gal 7 gal C 14 gal Check to make sure that students are marking their answers in the appropriate section of their answer documents. When students are ready, continue. The answer to the sample question is answer choice B, 7 gallons. Does anyone have any questions about how to mark an answer? Answer all questions. When students are ready, continue. You have all the time you need today to complete the mathematics test. Stop when you come to the last page of the test. You may check over all your answers after you have finished, but do not open or work in any other section of your test booklet. Be sure to mark only one answer on your answer document for each question. If you do not know the answer to a question, choose the answer you think might be correct. Remember you may write in your test booklet or on the graph paper at the end of the mathematics section if you would like to take notes or work problems, but you are not allowed to write on your separate mathematics chart. While you work on the test, I will move quietly around the room to make sure you are following directions and working on your own. For students who receive an oral administration, insert the following directions. I will be able to read each question and the answer choices to you. I can also read any words from tables, graphs, or diagrams if you ask me to do so. If you would like me to repeat anything, let me know. Explain to the students the level of reading support you will provide during the test. This should be based on the documentation in the IEP TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS

I cannot help you answer any test questions. I can only help you with questions about the directions. When you have finished, close your test booklet. I will collect your answer document, test booklet, and mathematics chart. Please sit quietly and do not talk or disturb others who are still working. Are there any questions? You are not allowed to answer any questions related to the content of the test itself. If a student asks a question that you are not permitted to answer, you may respond, for example, I can t answer that for you; just do the best you can. Answer all questions. When students are ready, continue. You will now complete the mathematics test on your own. If there are no more questions, then turn to page 8 in your test booklet and begin. Be sure to give students all the time they need to complete the test. While the students work, move around the room to see that they are following directions and marking all their answers in the appropriate section of their answer documents. directions Grade TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS 23

ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS GRADE 10 ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS These grade 10 English language arts test instructions apply to all 2011 TAKS M grade 10 English language arts s. Additional information about LAT administrations of TAKS M is found in Appendix A. Students may use dictionaries during the reading section of the ELA test. All security measures outlined in the materials must be followed. directions Grade TAKS M GRADES 9 11 TEST ADMINISTRATION DIRECTIONS 27
