3 MATHEMATICS: Maths is a human activity and it is part of our lives, it is all around us and everywhere we go. It is a subject which involves abstract problem solving and reasoning, therefore it requires dedicated and determined students who are willing to go an extra mile in order to achieve distinctions.

MATHS: Maths is a subject that builds upon previous knowledge ~ It requires the basic skills learned in the lower grades to solve abstract problems.

Learners should strive for an A level of understanding in all their classes. Maths is for academically gifted students. Learners should not be pressurised by their families into taking maths if they don t feel confident about it. Learners should be committed to working hard on a daily basis and be prepared to persevere and not give up easily.

9 Measurement REMEMBER!! Work gets more difficult as learners progress through the grades, so marks sometimes decline. Working harder and getting some tutoring is the answer.

11 MATHEMATICAL LITERACY We acknowledge and appreciate that not all learners have the ability to think in a mathematically abstract manner. For this reason, we are grateful that a subject like Mathematical Literacy is available to enable the learners to use the mathematical skills and concepts that they have learned.

12 MATHEMATICAL LITERACY Aims at developing the mathematical skills of our children in everyday situation. i.e. general life skills such as reading a bank statement, or setting up a budget are taught in Mathematical Literacy.

Some of the real-life scenarios that are dealt with in Mathematical Literacy are: *Financial issues such as hire purchase, bonds and investments. *The ability to read a map and follow timetables.

14 IS MATHEMATICAL LITERACY EASY? The answer to that question would be NO! It is easier than Pure Mathematics, but it is still not an easy subject. We do cover some very basic skills but we also delve into complicated scenarios, which certainly test the learners mathematical abilities. INCOME TAX EXAMPLE

15 Who should take Mathematical Literacy? If you are struggling with Mathematics at Grade 9 level, then you should consider taking Mathematical Literacy. If your career path does not need Pure Mathematics, then you should alleviate the stress and free up time (which can be spent on other subjects) by taking Mathematical Literacy. If you battle with abstract numerical thinking, then being exposed to contextual mathematics will benefit your confidence enormously.
