1 Summer Reading Welcome to 3 rd Grade! Dear Future 3 rd grade Students & Parents, This summer you will be required to read two books. You will be reading one fiction book and one informational text book. Any of the Magic Tree House Research Guide books. 1. Third Grade Angels by Jerry Spinelli You may visit to find one of the Magic Tree House Research Guide Books. Use the attached forms to complete the required assignment for each of the books you will be reading. Paste each of the assignment on a large index card or construction paper. Enjoy your summer and we are very excited to meet you. All assignments are due September 4, 2015 The Third Grade Teachers

4 Sunset Elementary School Skills to Review Before Entering Grade 3 Reading/Language Arts Comprehend text/reading passages on grade level and able to answer who, what, where, when, and why questions accurately about the text. Read aloud with fluency and expression. Know and identify the main idea of a story or passage. Stop at periods, pause at commas, raise their voice at a question mark, and talk with emphasis at exclamation point. Summarize, or retell, a story after reading it. Uses context clues to confirm or self correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary. Recognize and give examples of nouns, verb, and adjectives. Form and use frequently occurring irregular plural nouns. (e.g. feet, children, teeth, mice, fish) Form and use the past tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs. (e.g. sat, hit. told, fell) Mathematics Use addition and subtraction to solve multiple step word problems. Add and subtract mentally up to 20 with fluency. Know the difference between odd and even numbers. Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones. Compare two three-digit numbers using >, =, and < symbol. Add and subtract four-digit numbers using regrouping. Measure the length of different objects using a ruler (inches and centimeters). Tell time to the nearest five minutes, half hour, and quarter hour. Solve word problems involving money (dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies). Use $ sign and appropriately. Understand data on a picture graph and bar graph. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes. Social Studies Recognize that each community contains groups of people who have contributed to the community s cultural diversity.

5 Define and give examples of urban, suburban, and rural communities. Define the role of government. Recognize common map symbols used in map legends, including cardinal and intermediate directions on a compass rose. Describe environmental problems in the community. Define economic terms; production, goods, services, trade, market, distribution, credit, supply, demand. Interpret a graph related to an economic concept. Differentiate occupations that produce goods and those that perform services. Science Raise questions about the natural world, investigate them, and generate explanations based on those explorations Recognize that Earth is made up of rocks and different soil types Humans continue to explore the interactions among water, air, and land All objects and substances in the world are made of matter. Substances can be classified by their physical and chemical properties. Matter can undergo a variety of changes (physically or chemically) Energy exists in many forms and has the ability to do work and cause a change. It takes energy to change the motion of objects. All plants and animals, including humans, are alike in some ways and different in others. Offspring of plants and animals are similar to, but not exactly like, their parents or each other. Reproduction is a major stage in the life cycle of all organisms. Plants and animals, including humans, interact with and depend upon each other and their environment to satisfy their basic needs. Write a paragraph with beginning, middle, and end. (Be able to indent) Organizational Skills/ Work Habits Copy Home Learning efficiently and accurately into an agenda. Establish a daily morning routine in order to arrive on time and prepared for school. (pencils sharpened, supplies ready, etc) Establish an afternoon routine for home learning completion on daily basis. Be responsible and take ownership of what is expected on a daily basis. Organize school materials. (book bags should be organized and cleaned out periodically)
