Measuring growth for grades 3 8 Connected to the SAT Suite of Assessments Strong measurement. Better learning.
Create a consistent assessment system to measure college and career readiness empower Assessments by Measured Progress provide the only assessment solution for grades 3 8 that gives a direct predictive connection to the SAT Suite of Assessments. Together, empower and the SAT Suite of Assessments represent a comprehensive approach to assessment that yields valid and reliable data to show growth over time, through graduation. empower Assessments give you an accurate indicator of student progress toward meeting state and national standards. They help you identify patterns and pathways to college and career readiness and success. empower Assessments give you: A coherent program for grades 3 12, anchored to the SAT Suite of Assessments The ability to reduce redundant, disconnected testing and gain targeted classroom instruction time Immediate reporting, so teachers can make instructional adjustments that have an impact Consistency in standards and measurement across classroom instruction, district-wide interim assessment, and state accountability tests 2 measuredprogress.org
At Measured Progress, we ve created statewide accountability assessments for more than 30 years. With empower Assessments, we have brought that assessment expertise in test creation, design, and delivery to the district and classroom levels. Stuart Kahl, Founding Principal at Measured Progress evidence-based reliable valid Follows evidence-centered design principles Ensures rigorous alignment of item and test designs to content standards Made up of entirely new items focused on the outcomes that are important to measure Meets test design standards for reliability as put forth in the Standards of Educational and Psychological Testing (AERA/NCME/APA, 2014) Reports proficiency levels consistently for subscores, to identify areas of student need Built to measure progress toward college and career readiness standards, authored by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers Enables meaningful inferences from test scores Measured Progress is a partner with the College Board. This collaboration provides consistency between empower and the SAT Suite of Assessments, with similar standards, level of rigor, and item types. Measured Progress developed many of the English language arts and mathematics items used on the PSAT 8/9 and PSAT 10 assessments. measuredprogress.org 3

Measure growth within and across years Reading Writing and Language Math Reading Writing and Language Math empower Assessments at a glance Reading Writing and Language Math Type of assessment: interim, criterion-referenced Growth to Spring Administration Growth to Winter Administration Fall Baseline School Year School Year School Year Beginning-of-year, mid-year, and end-of-year tests help you measure student growth up to three times a year. From the data, you can see trends, evaluate program effectiveness, and identify instructional areas that need additional support. Format: fixed-form Grades: 3 8 Subjects: reading writing and language mathematics Standards covered: college and career readiness, statespecific standards Administrations per year: up to 3 Length of test: 2 sessions per administration, per subject, per grade level Timing per session: between 25 and 50 minutes, depending on grade level and subject area Types of items: selectedresponse, including multiplechoice, multiple-select, and evidence-based selectedresponse Delivery modes: online or paper/pencil Scoring: auto-scored Reporting time: immediate empower Plus includes constructed-response items that are hand-scored Accommodations Available: Magnification Visual contrast controls Read-aloud/text-to-speech measuredprogress.org 5
The student experience empower gives students a consistent testing program throughout their academic journey so they are fully prepared for high school, college, and career. Here s the story of one student, Emma, as she goes through school. 3rd Grade: Spring A few weeks after the statewide accountability test, Emma takes empower a third time. 3rd Grade: Fall Emma takes empower to establish a baseline for grade 3 standards. The test also includes questions built on grade 2 standards. 3rd Grade: Winter Emma takes empower again. Emma shows significant growth in previously identified areas in need of support but demonstrates less growth in others. The results give her teacher actionable information to continue to adjust and target instruction. Emma shows varying levels of growth and achieves at standard on all her subscores. The results give her teacher a good idea of what Emma s state results will be, with no waiting. If her state uses empower for its accountability assessment, this is the only spring general achievement test Emma takes. Emma s teacher uses empower Classroom to differentiate instruction until the last day of school. Emma s empower score report shows she needs support in analysis and interpretation for reading and for modeling in math. Using empower Classroom tools, her teacher adjusts her instruction based on a deeper understanding of Emma s strengths and weaknesses. 6 measuredprogress.org
High School Emma takes the PSAT 8/9, PSAT 10, and SAT. 8th Grade: Fall Emma s empower score gives her an accurate prediction of her PSAT score. She is well-prepared and confident, because she has successfully taken on challenging tasks and rigorous assessments like empower throughout her educational career. Because Emma knows her strengths and weaknesses, she takes advantage of resources from Khan Academy to do additional work on her own. 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Grades Emma continues to take empower Assessments three times each year. Emma s teachers use empower Classroom Testlets and item sets on an ongoing basis to engage her in the formative feedback process, set stretch learning targets, and establish growth expectations together. Emma continues to learn and her teachers are well-equipped to help her. measuredprogress.org 7
Deliver strong instructional support at every level Using empower Assessments, you gain a powerful picture of student learning during each school year and throughout your students academic careers. The empower Assessments suite supports teachers and district leaders every step of the way, to ensure students get the right instructional support at the right time to meet college and career readiness goals. Support for district leaders Provide control over your assessment calendar. Each empower Assessments test session fits within a class period 50 minutes or less to give you more control of your assessment schedule and to minimize classroom interruptions. Maintain respect for instructional time. empower Assessments provide meaningful data throughout the year, with less testing time. Test lengths and reporting options support U.S. Department of Education recommendations that student assessments should be worth taking, of high quality, and time-limited. Promote engagement with a variety of item types. empower Assessments uses multiple-choice, multipleselect, and evidence-based selected-response items. empower Plus adds constructed-response items and will soon include technology-enhanced items. Support for teachers and students Deliver data quickly. empower Assessments provide immediate score reporting in a teacher-friendly design, so teachers can take action to plan individual instruction or communicate progress in real time. Include support for classroom learning. empower Classroom includes formative assessment resources that help teachers and students work together to set targets for further learning. Show grouping possibilities. empower score reporting includes a class roster report with instructional smallgroup suggestions. Teachers can use these summaries to engage students, flag potential interventions, and identify instructional needs for every student. Session Timing empower Assessments are untimed tests. Subject area tests consist of 2 sessions, each designed to be administered in a single class period. Session timing estimates below include administration time. empower Reading: 40 minutes Writing and Language: 25 minutes Mathematics: 35 minutes empower Plus Reading: 50 minutes Writing and Language: 25 minutes Mathematics: 45 minutes empower Classroom On-demand instructional resources for teachers Untimed 8 measuredprogress.org

Clear reporting results with reliable scores empower Assessments provide multiple score reports for parents, teachers, principals, and district leaders. Individual Student Reports show student progress toward proficiency. Classroom Reports include class rosters and instructional grouping suggestions. School/District Summary Reports support comparisons and district-wide decision-making. Subgroup Reports track specific subgroups such as gender, ethnicity, special education, English Language Learners, and more. Longitudinal Reports look across years with cut scores and at average scale scores across years. Growth Reports provide interim results for student progress against standards. The scale score is a single number on the growth scale for each subject area. The proficiency level is a color-coded indicator to show progress toward mastery of grade-level standards. Proficiency level subscores indicate a finer grain of proficiency for specific skills within each content area, such as modeling within mathematics. empower reports on math practices as well as concepts and procedures for every grade level. The individual score report gives parents information on their child s progress. Grade 8 reports include PSAT College and Career Readiness Benchmarks. measuredprogress.org 11
