It brings together the theoretical and practical skills, knowledge and experiences gained during your course. Carefully considered review, reflection and intelligent critical analysis of your research and design development process is central to achieving success in this module. You will also be expected to address issues of visual quality, design detail, appropriate technology and human/ operational factors. You should aim to demonstrate proficiency in complex project management and to work with a high degree of autonomy and design sensitivity in the production of the final outcomes. MODULE LEARIG OUTCOMES By engaging successfully with this module a student will be able to: - Identify design opportunities based on conclusions drawn from research and formulate an appropriately challenging design brief. Schedule and manage a substantial piece of design project work. Demonstrate that design proposals have been based on the collection, generation, evaluation, interpretation, analysis and creative synthesis of research data. Show that considered design sensitive judgements are evident in the final outcomes. Demonstrate insight and professional skills in the production of design proposals, outcomes and in design presentation and communication using appropriate media. Reflect upon and critically evaluate your design project work against the preceding research aims.

2 IDICATIVE COTET This module comprises a substantial body of self-directed design project work in the context of your specialism. You are expected to make sustained reference to external sources, including practitioners and specialists in related and associated disciplines. This substantial body of project work will require the creative synthesis of aesthetic, technological and human factors, which will inform your design decisions. Real and/or virtual modelling will form part of the submission. A successful project will be one where there is a degree of measured risk, creativity, imagination, rigour and analysis of all relevant constraining factors. Progress and outcomes must be visualised and presented in a clear and professional manner. Since presentation and execution of a high standard are expected studio space, ICT facilities, workshops and laboratories are provided to practice and refine your skills. On completion of the project you are required to reflect on the process and outcomes and to produce a final evaluative report. LEARIG, TEACHIG AD ASSESSMET - STRATEGY AD METHODS Academic staff will approve your project and guide and support you through it, typically via individual or group tutorials and project presentations. The module requires a high level of personal enterprise, project management and selfdirected study. You will be expected to plan your own project schedule, within a broad framework provided by the module leader, to seek appropriate tutorial guidance from academic staff and/or other specialists and to research beyond the confines of the university when this is appropriate or necessary. Some professional skills are apparent in recording the findings, though professional research skills are less evident. Important aspects of research have not been fully covered and interpretation of the findings

3 and experiences is limited. Creativity 1 Development 2 Critical Awareness 6 6 Communication 5 5 Resolution 4 There is some thought and evidence of an ability to establish an independent design project with an appropriate level of challenge/complexity. However, the range of creative strategies is constrained and consequently, the successful synthesis of ideas/information is limited to specific aspects of the work. There is evidence of analysis and reflection and most aspects of the brief have been explored, demonstrating a reasonably well-managed approach to design development. Professional skills and contextual understanding are evident in some of the work, though many issues or questions remain to be resolved. There is evidence of evaluation of the most important themes/theories and context, with some reflection on the development of the project. Discussion focuses on the more routine aspects of delivery and debate of the more complex ideas and possible insight is limited. Working within a diverse professional context, there is evidence of discussion, debate and interaction with relevant specialists and effective communication of the most relevant ideas and contextual issues. Most communication skills are at a professional standard, though there are some gaps in the explanation, which leaves the story only partially complete. The outcomes embody the essential ideas and qualities inherent in the design proposal and demonstrate some skill in making, production and presentation. However, the project outcomes demonstrate weakness in either (or both), visual sensibility and technical competence. FEEDBACK Students will receive feedback on their performance in the following ways: - Your independent study programme is supported in regular meetings with staff in group, or individual tutorials. You receive formative feedback on the progress of your work through the regular weekly tutorials. There is also a mid-module presentation, when you present the progress of your project. The purpose of this meeting is to provide discursive feedback and guidance on possible future directions for your work from tutors and fellow students.

4 Tutors will give summative feedback referenced to assessment criteria upon completion of the module. This feedback focuses on the outcomes of your independent study and on possible future career directions.
