3 What is OLLI and How Does It Operate? The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) is a program of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, led and supported by its membership, determining its own curriculum, policies, procedures, and fees. There are over 100 other Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes around the country, but each program is completely independent, with many different formats, fees, and ways of operating. What Osher Institutes have in common are high quality and financial support from the Osher Foundation. They recognize the generosity of benefactor Bernard Osher by using the Osher name. OLLI at UAF offers a rich array of classes and learning opportunities for adults who are 50 or older. You can explore academic and general interest classes in an atmosphere that is intellectually challenging, but without the stress of tests and grades. Members are invited from all backgrounds: a college education is not a prerequisite for membership. Members share the common bonds of intellectual curiosity and the experience of their generation. They are self-motivated learners, eager to share opinions, knowledge, and expertise with humor and mutual respect. Organization Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a program of Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. It is supported by membership fees, donations, and an endowment that was initiated by a generous gift from the Bernard Osher Foundation. Members participate in planning and operating the program through committees and a Board of Directors. Board members are elected at an annual membership meeting. Annual Membership Membership is open to adults 50 and older and their adult companions. The annual fee is $35. The membership year is January to December. Membership includes e-newsletters, socials, lecture series, special interest groups, and eligibility to register for courses and excursions. Courses Classes are held in Spring (March May) and Fall (September November). Most classes meet on weekdays, once a week, for four weeks. Topics are in the fields of art, computers, current events, health, history, literature, music, philosophy, and science, as well as exercise and hobbies. The format may be lecture, discussion group, or hands-on. There are no tests or grades. Classes are taught by current and retired faculty of UAF and by others with specialized expertise. Fees $35 annual membership (Jan. Dec.) $15 per course, or $150 for unlimited courses for a full year (Jan. Dec.) Lecture Series OLLI s Winter Lecture Series features monthly talks by distinguished UAF faculty and community members. Socials Ice Cream Social in September Lunch and Annual Meeting in April Educational Travel Travel programs in various locations in Alaska have become part of the UAF lifelong learning experience. In recent years, UAF-OLLI groups have traveled to Prince William Sound, Petersburg, Kennicott, Lake Minchumina, Kasitsna Bay, Denali National Park, Katmai, and Prudhoe Bay. 10 Films & Photography Movies of Jane Austen Novels FLM-01 Session I: Sept. 11, 16, 18, 23, 30, Oct. 2, 7 TuTh 2:00 4:30 pm (begins 9/11, no class 9/25) Two hundred years ago a young English author wrote novels that highlighted the dependence of women on marriage to secure social standing and economic security. The similarity of locations, dialogue, pace, and lifestyle depicted in every book might render their presentation in film repetitive, and yet each new version of a movie based on an Austen novel is eagerly awaited. Using the same cleverly crafted dialogue and satirical character sketches found in Jane s novels, the movies are set in sumptuous period locations with authentic costumes. This class will consider the ingredients of the books and the crafting of the films from them. You will get more from the class if you read (or re-read) a Jane Austen novel prior to the class, but it is not required. Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, Persuasion, Emma, and Northanger Abbey are the films likely to be shown. Instructor Ken McFarland (see EX-08) is a longtime film aficionado as well as a dance enthusiast. Oscar Near Misses FLM-02 Session I: Sept. 10, 17, 24, Oct. 1 Wednesdays 2:00 5:00 pm We will watch and discuss four Oscar-nominated films which could, and arguably should, have won the Academy Award for best picture. These films are quite different from one another, but they are all excellent and would have made quite acceptable choices for the Academy. Facilitator Clif Lando is a retired UAF mathematics professor and department head. Now with our knowledge of the structure of the atom and of the nature of our genetic code, a new age of advanced medicine is evolving. Treatment of heart attacks by regrowth of heart muscle by one s own stem cells, anatomical transplants from one s own skin tissue, and replacement of defective or missing enzymes through genetic manipulation are procedures being carried out today! Science & Mathematics Avian Navigation and Migration SCI-01 Session I: Sept. 8, 15, 22, 29 Mondays 8:45 10:00 am Most birds breeding in Alaska migrate to distant parts of the earth to overwinter, typically returning the next spring to the same areas where they grew up or last bred. How do they find their way and why do they go to such extremes? We ll first examine how they navigate: what cues do they use to provide a compass sense, a map sense? We will then explore migratory routes and their likely evolutionary history, focusing on some of the most remarkable migratory feats of birds. We will end with a discussion of the unique and changing conservation issues that migratory birds face throughout the annual cycle. If you d like to read about these topics before the class starts, I recommend Scott Weidensaul s Living on the Wind (1999, North Point Press). We Need Nuclear Power SCI-04 Session I: Sept. 12, 19, 26, Oct. 3 Fridays 2:00 3:15 pm The world population (nearing 9 billion) has doubled twice since 1930; the climate is warming and the oceans are increasing in acidity. Nuclear power, though replete with many troublesome issues, does not contribute to these problems. Because of nuclear reactor accidents, questions of radioactive waste disposal and radiation safety, many think that nuclear energy as a power source should be scrapped. Before doing so, we should objectively reexamine the nuclear power issues. In spite of the provocative title, this course will not be a sales pitch for nuclear power. It will be a factual, objective examination of the nuclear issues. Instructor Dan Hawkins, Emeritus Professor of Geochemistry at UAF, is a former Research Geochemist with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. Changes in Northern Vegetation SCI-05 Session II: Oct. 15, 22, 29, Nov. 5 Wednesdays 10:30 11:45 am Climate change is occurring faster in the north than elsewhere on Earth. 20 OLLI Winter Lecture Series The first Fridays of December, January, and February 3:00 4:30 pm in the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center Theatre. Registration is not required. Invite a potential member! After the lecture, go on to Fairbanks First Friday events! December 5, 2014 The Changing Arctic Landscape and Implications for Moose with Ken Tape We will explore the landscape changes that have occurred in Arctic Alaska during the 20th century, by comparing repeated old photographs of vegetation, glaciers, and permafrost. The causes of the observed changes and the role of climate warming will be addressed. The results of these landscape changes on wildlife such as moose will also be shown. Ken Tape, PhD, is an ecologist at the Institute of Northern Engineering, University of Alaska Fairbanks. He has broad interests in the arctic natural sciences. His research describes the impacts of climate warming during the 20th century on various components of the Arctic ecosystem, including vegetation, permafrost, hydrology, and wildlife. His interests lie more in the linkages between these components than in any isolated component. He has used repeat photography to document landscape change in Northern Alaska, which appears in his book (The Changing Arctic Landscape, University of Alaska Press 2010) and traveling museum exhibit (Then & Now, The Changing Arctic Landscape). He has boated, skied, snowmachined, dog-mushed, photographed, and written about the major river systems in northern Alaska. Matt Nolan UAF-OLLI@alaska.edu

21 Patrick Endres/alaskaphotographics.com January 2, 2015 The Polar Pumpkin: Cessna 185 Solo to the South and North Poles with Art Mortvedt The bright orange Polar Pumpkin is the only single engine fixed wing production aircraft in the world to have been flown solo to both geographic poles. On November 22, 1999, Art Mortvedt delivered French skier Laurence de la Ferriere to the South Pole in the Polar Pumpkin. It was then that Art conceived the idea of flying this same aircraft also to the North Pole. Years and events transpired. On April 6, 2013, on the third attempt, Art flew the Polar Pumpkin over the Geographic North Pole, landed approximately 20 miles from the North Pole on a piece of drifting sea ice, and flew safely back home to Alaska. This presentation will explore the polar environments, aviation challenges, and scientific objectives. Art Mortvedt moved to Alaska in 1974 to teach in the village of Shungnak. He has spent 40 years in the Brooks Range, training sled dogs, hunting, fishing, trapping, and flying small airplanes. Art has made over 20 expeditions to Antarctica, 6 expeditions as part of a logistics team to the Central Arctic Ocean, and various expeditions to other parts of the world. He and his wife Damaris operate the Peace of Selby Wilderness Lodge at Selby Lake. Art is a member of the Explorers Club (New York) and the Royal Geographical Society (London). February 6, 2015 The Paradox of Alaska s 1916 Alcohol Referendum: A Dry Vote within a Frontier Alcohol Culture with Mary Ehrlander Alaska s 1916 vote to go Dry is counter-intuitive, given the territory s frontier alcohol culture that reflected masculine norms, anti-authoritarian attitudes, and emphasis on individual rights. So what were 62 percent of the voters thinking in November 1916 when they voted to go Dry? It appears that most who voted to go Dry aimed to reduce the evil influence of saloons and abuse by others, rather than to require themselves to temper their own unproblematic drinking habits. Mary Ehrlander, PhD, is Director of Northern Studies and Professor of History at University of Alaska Fairbanks. This presentation is based on an essay that won the Washington State Historical Society s Charles Gates Award for the best article published in Pacific Northwest Quarterly in She recently edited and translated Seventeen Years in Alaska: A Depiction of Life Among the Indians of Yakutat (University of Alaska Press, 2014), the memoir of a Swedish Covenant Missionary who served at Yakutat from 1889 to Online registration opens 9:30 a.m. Aug. 20 (see p. 22) 19 UAF photo by Todd Paris
