1 POFT 1227 Introduction to Keyboarding COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: POFT 1227 Introduction to Keyboarding (1-2-2) COURSE (CATALOG) DESCRIPTION: Skill development in keyboarding techniques. Emphasis on the development of acceptable speed and accuracy. Unit 2 Keyboarding: The Alphabet (Lessons 6-10) C. Unit 3 Keyboarding: Numbers and Symbols (Lessons 11-15) D. Unit 4 Keyboarding: Numbers and Symbols (Lessons 16-20) This course has been divided into four units. In each unit, you will be given a lecture/demonstration and then be expected to perform the lessons for each unit. After each unit, there will be a timing exam. READING MATERIAL FOR COURSE: All reading will come from the reference book for this course. Reference book information can be found under required text and materials. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Student Learning Objectives for Critical Thinking At the end of this course, the students will have demonstrated the ability to: A. Identify the essential question, issue, and/or problem. Student Learning Outcomes for Introduction to Keyboarding At the end of this course, the student will be able to: A. Demonstrate basic keyboarding techniques including keyboarding by touch.

ISBN GRADING CRITERIA: GRADING SCALE: Daily Lessons... 25% A Daily Timings**... 20% B Technique... 5% C Test Timings**... 50% D 0-59 F **A grade of zero (0) will be recorded for any daily lesson timing or test timing that does not meet the minimum passing grade of sixty (60) indicated on the speed scale in the GRADING POLICY section of this document. PARTICIPATION POLICY: Student participation is defined in the current TSTC Harlingen Campus Catalog and Student Handbook; and is expanded to include: participation in discussions and chats; answering and completing Assignments, Activities, Tests and Quizzes. Additionally, students are expected to read all assigned materials. Your average will be provided by your instructor after each chapter exam. Any other questions concerning your grade, average or progress in coursework will not be discussed during class; you must make an appointment to discuss your progress with your instructor. ACCOMMODATION STATEMENT: If you have a documented disability which will make it difficult for you to carry out classwork as outlined and/or if you need special accommodations due to a disability, please contact (956) or visit the Support Services Office in the Tech Prep Building P as soon as possible to make appropriate arrangements. CLASS POLICIES: TECHNIQUE Technique is very important as you learn to type. You must continue to use correct typing technique in order to build speed and accuracy. Technique will be evaluated by your instructor no less than two (2) and no more than four (4) times during the semester. These evaluations will be unannounced. Technique is 5 percent of your final grade, so it is very important to practice it at all times. Some of the key points your instructor will be looking for are as follows: Arms Back Feet Parallel to the body Sit back in the chair and lean slightly forward Flat on the floor (your weight should be on your feet)

4 Eyes Wrists Shifting On copy (head not going back and forth from book to hands) DO NOT rest wrists on keyboard (fingers should be curved) Shift with the opposite hand than the one with which you are typing the letter to be capitalized Keyboard covers, skins, may be used throughout the semester, including during daily lessons, daily timings, and test timings. GRADING POLICY FOR ALL DAILY LESSON TIMINGS AND TEST TIMINGS A daily grade will be recorded for the lessons as well as a grade for assigned timings. Please sit in chairs correctly. When leaving the computer lab, please push chair under the desk. 2. All books and backpacks should be placed inside or under the desks instead of in the aisles. 3. Cell phones and ipods are not allowed in the computer lab. Please turn them off. Texting is not permitted during class time. 4. Food and drinks are not permitted in the computer lab. 5. Chat rooms, computer games, MySpace, Facebook, or any other non-class related computer use during class time is prohibited.
