Prezi DISTRIBUTE the following handouts: o Learning Discussion 5B: Growth Mindset Student Handout. o Growth Mindset Handout [Shows a diagram; students can keep this] OPEN the Prezi 2 Each new row requires you to click the Prezi. Note that the faculty notes include places to click in the Prezi to zoom in. What do you see going on in this picture? Wait for 5 seconds, while students think. Thinking about the past four discussions, what do you think this picture represents? Call on a few student volunteers. (Click Prezi) What does EGSHFO stand for? Wait for 5 seconds, while students think. (Click Prezi 2 times) EGSHFO is a mnemonic device, or memory strategy, to remember the Intelligent Practice formula. Every Good Student Has Friends Over, reminds you that the formula is Effort + Good Strategies + Help From Others = Intelligent Practice. The picture is also an example of creating a visual image, or using multiple pathways, to create a retrievable memory. When you create a memory, you change your brain. You create new neural pathways. 2 You might remember that we talked about how your brain grows new connections when you learn. For example, we can see this type of process when we watch this MIT video: 2 The glowing red image is of a neuron growing. Remember, that when you think and solve problems, your brain sends messages from one neuron to the next. Learning builds connections between neurons. When you practice a skill, you are building these connections. We ve discussed this as the neurons that fire together, wire together. For example, when we first saw this video, your brain may have been making new connections. Your neurons are firing together and wiring together as you learn and as we re---watch this video together. Considering what we have learned about neural plasticity and brain growth, take a few minutes to respond to Question on the 5B handout. Question : When you face a challenge in school, how do you respond? Based on these learning discussions, has your response changed? If so, how? If not, why not? Now let s watch a video about how someone else responded to challenge. After the Michael Jordan commercial video When Michael Jordan faced challenges, he responded with effort, not excuses. 3 Yellow Handout Carol Dweck, from Stanford University, has identified two mindsets that are described on your 5C handout. One group responds to challenges with effort, like Michael Jordan. These people have a growth mindset. The other group responds to challenge with excuses, and they give up. These people have a fixed mindset. With a fixed mindset intelligence is static and it leads to a desire to look smart. On the other hand, with a growth mindset intelligence can be developed and leads to a desire to learn. In order to understand the differences between fixed and growth mindsets, let s match scenarios with each type of mindset. On the 5D handout, circle the scenario that reflects the Growth Mindset for each characteristic. For challenges, a fixed mindset avoids challenges but a growth mindset embraces them. A) Rate my professor says Mr. Smith is really hard, but he gets you ready for transfer. So, I took his class. B) Sometimes I struggle in math, so I m going to wait to take my math classes. 4 For obstacles, a fixed mindset gives up easily, while a growth mindset keeps going in the face of setbacks. C) The tutoring center was closed. So I met a classmate for help on our bio homework. D) I failed my first assignment, so I m dropping this class. For effort, a fixed mindset sees effort as useless, while a growth mindset sees effort as the path to mastery. E) I m just not good at writing, so why even try. F) When I was lost in class, I created a study group. We met for hours. As a result, I got my best grade on my midterm. 5 For criticism, a fixed mindset ignores useful negative feedback, while a growth mindset learns from criticism. G) I didn t want to do the revision, but I followed the teacher s suggestions and I wrote a better paper. H) Mr. Jackson said I was too pitchy in rehearsal, but I didn t think I needed any more practice. For success of others, a fixed mindset feels threatened by the success of others, while a growth mindset finds lessons and inspiration in the success of others. 2 I) My best friend got a $500 scholarship, but she just got lucky. J) My sister was the first one in my family to go to college and she inspired me to go to college. Turn to a partner and compare your answers.
