What is this course about? 1.1 Course description Organisations face increasing environmental uncertainty with shortening product and technology life cycles and increasing competition. Managers need to develop an understanding of their organisation s industry structure, external environment as well as its internal strengths and weaknesses. It is also important that managers are able to think creatively in formulating and implementing their strategies to ensure their organisation s success in its industry. This course, therefore, focuses on providing future managers with relevant strategic management concepts to advance their skills and abilities so that they can contribute towards an organisation s competitive advantage. 1.2 Course content Introduction to course and the strategic management process External analysis Internal analysis Functional level strategy Business level strategy and industry environment I and II Corporate strategy Strategy in the global environment Strategy implementation I and II Stakeholders, corporate governance, and business ethics Strategic entrepreneurship, managing strategic change, and strategic management in public/ not-for-profit organisations 2. Collaboration Problem solving Assessment Task 2a: Assignment Strategic Management Report Component 1: Project Plan Goal: The purpose of this component is to help you familiarise and build relationships with your team members, clarify the roles of team members and ensure that each member makes a worthwhile contribution in producing a high quality report and to be able to submit the report on time (time management). You are required to submit this component to your

4 Page 4 tutor in week 5. This assignment will be based on a case study which will be posted on Blackboard in week 1. It has 3 different components. Product: Project Plan - Strategic Management Report Format: This is a group assessment. The length of this assignment should be approximately 750 words. In this component you are required to provide an outline of the project plan which should cover the following aspects: names of the team members and their roles in the assignment as to who is going to do what and when how often you are going to meet as a group and what you are going to discuss in the meeting list of references including the industry reports if any that you are going to use in completing your assignment project activity schedule for progress monitoring to ensure that you are able to submit your assignment on time your strategy for addressing the conflict if any in your group Criteria level of comprehensiveness of the project plan roles and responsibilities clearly outlined appropriateness of research materials clearly defined and achievable scheduling Information literacy Collaboration Assignment Task 2b: Assignment Strategic Management Report - Component 2: Main Written Report Goal: This task is an opportunity to develop your strategic management skills through the production of an authentic report for a business/industry case study. The case study will be made Product: Strategic Management Report Format: This is a group assessment. The length of this assignment should be approximately 2500 words. See WORKBOOK on Blackboard for tentative structure and further details of this assessment. Criteria Marks will be allocated using the marking guide which will be made available on Blackboard (please check your WORKBOOK on blackboard for marking criteria). The assessment criteria are: application of relevant strategic management concepts, frameworks and theory critical evaluation and logical development of arguments identification of critical issues and the generation of recommendations error free writing with appropriate formatting use of relevant credible sources and appropriate referencing style Peer evaluation - collaboration among group members For marking consistency, a marks moderation meeting will be held with all markers. 5 Page 5 Assessment Task 2c: Assignment Strategic Management Report - Component 3: In-class Presentation Goal: The purpose of this task is to enable you to develop your presentation skills a key skill in business. Product: In-class presentations Format: 15 minute presentation of what you did, how you did, what you found in your project and what your recommendations are. Please note that all students in the tutorial are expected to attend all presentations and be prepared to ask questions. Everyone in the group should be involved in the presentations in weeks 10, 11 and 12. You need to provide a hard copy of your presentation material (eg PowerPoint slides) to your tutor before starting your presentation. Criteria The following criteria will be used for marking your presentation: team involvement - introduction of group members, their roles, project objectives, and the method used in collecting information professional disposition use of audio visual material content, structure and application of relevant strategic management concepts key findings from your study conclusions and recommendations interaction/q&a Information literacy Collaboration Assessment Task 3: Final examination Goal: This exam will be a cumulative assessment and will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of the strategic management concepts developed in this course. Product: Exam Format: This is an individual assessment. Criteria The marks for each question will be indicated in your exam paper. For marking consistency, a marks moderation meeting will be held with all markers. The following criteria will be used for assessment: demonstration of good understanding of the key strategic management concepts covered in the course ability to apply relevant strategic management concepts in addressing the relevant management problems ability to think critically about the question and to convey this in the written answer Information literacy 5.3 Additional assessment requirements Plagiarism In order to minimise incidents of plagiarism and collusion, this course may require that some of its assessment tasks, when submitted to Blackboard, are electronically checked through SafeAssign. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that SafeAssign has access to.

6 Page 6 Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment Your eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) You have not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct 5.4 Submission penalties Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate: 5% (of the assessment task s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. 10% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the third day 20% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late. To request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome. 6.
