Your 3 Communication Levels Scorecard Assessment Communication is the most vital tool in any leaders toolbox and yet few organizations and even fewer institutions of higher learning make it a required area of study. Even few require it to be an area of mastery. Yet, it is communication skills that will allow leaders to build the relationships they need at the level they need to get results through others. This Communication Power for Leaders training is the most comprehensive training you can find anywhere that provides you with the background, insights and specific communication skills you need to excel in your role as an organizational leader or team leader. In this training we will be working on the only categories of communication you need to worry about. In my 12-years of working with organizational leaders I ve found these three categories to be most inclusive of virtually everything you need in terms of leading others through your communication skills. 3 ! LEVEL 1: Self-Communication = The Foundation It all starts with ourselves. We are the only person we communicate with 24/7 so we better get it right, yet few of us do. You can t lead others til you can lead yourself first and be able to do it so others experience your ability to lead yourself. This is the foundation of it all. 1) Self-Talk / Internal Dialogue is the core that drives your: a. Emotions b. Self-Confidence c. Self-Esteem 2) Self-Talk / Internal Dialogue core skills to master: a. Emotional Mastery i. Mastering Your Emotional Triad ii. Transformational Vocabulary to Change Your Experience iii. Meaning Reframing with the 3 Power Questions for Emotional Mastery b. Active Affirmations for Confidence Building c. Your Primary Question to Laser Like Focus d. The 7 Critical Communication Skills LEVEL 2: 1:1 Communication = The Trust Builder The number one issue missing from workplace communication in virtually every company is a culture of candid communication. When you build your skills in having candid conversations you will set yourself apart from the rest of your peers, colleagues and superiors. You will be able to drive conversations, drive relationships and influence people at all levels of the organization, with and without authority. Often, they re not easy conversations, many times they should be and can be much easier than we make them and there is a specific formula for making it so. 1) Make These Relationship Building Conversations a. Evaluate Your Sphere of Influence b. Evaluate Your Relationship i. Trust ii. Commitment to a Common Vision c. Lead with Empathy d. Seek First to Understand: Learn What s Most Important to the Individual in X e. Craft Language on Universal Radio Station WII-FM (What s In It for Me!) f. Apply The 7 Critical Communication Skills! 4 ! LEVEL 3: Public/Group Communication = The Impression Maker It s been said that public speaking is the greatest fear in most human beings. I m not sure I agree totally with that but it definitely causes problems for most. Even if people are not afraid of speaking in public, you ve probably experienced many people making presentations who should be afraid. They are just clueless about how bad they are at presenting in public, in running and facilitating meetings. If you want to be noticed by the masses in a way that impresses others in terms of your charisma and credibility there is no quicker way to do it than to master communicating in a public setting, either from in front of the room, or around the conference room table making powerful points. 1) Three Skills from In Front of the Room a. Making Presentations b. Facilitating Discussions c. Running Meetings 2) Skills from the Side of the Conference Room Table a. Powerfully Participating in Meetings b. Preparing to Participate in Meetings 3) Apply The 7 Critical Communication Skills in All Situations Your 3 Levels of Communication Influence Scorecard: On the scorecard below assess your level of competency in each of The 3 Levels of Leadership Communication. Be honest with yourself on where you need the most work remembering that Level 1 is the foundation that determining your level of self-esteem, self-worth and selfconfidence which drives the other two levels of communication. Simply circle the number on each line that represents your score in each category and write that number in the line to the left (1 = very low, and you have a lot of work to do, 10 = you ve mastered this level and have no more room for improvement) Level 1: Self-Communication Level 2: 1:1 Communication Level 3: Public/Group Communication Something to Think About: This self-assessment provides you insight into where you need to invest your time to build your Communication Power as a leader. Note that Level 1 Communication drives Level 2 & Level 3. Therefore, regardless of how well you scored yourself at Level 1, if you are challenged in any context in Levels 2 or Level 3, we have to return back to Level 1 to build the Level 2 or 3 skills. 5 Communication Level 1 - Professional Self-Esteem Assessment 1) You often find yourself afraid of success and having high levels of self-doubt in new situations. Your self-talk in these situations is often, What if I don t measure up? What if I got the project/job and couldn t do it or get it done? What if I was selected as chair person and no one listens to me? 2) Your language often deflects your successes and beats yourself up when you make a mistake (you got lucky, while others are talented, if someone fails they were unlucky, if you fail you re no good). 3) You often fail to press your point, and when people disagree, resist or contradict you, you don t stand up for yourself. 4) You take disagreement personally so you either avoid challenging conversations for fear of the confrontation or not being liked, or you get defensive when challenged or when given negative/constructive feedback, and may even lash out at the person delivering the message. 5) You do not directly ask for things you want/need, and are afraid to ask. This also includes being embarrassed by what you rightfully have. Even though you are proud of those things you don t like to use them in public, wear them, or talk about your latest overseas vacation, etc. for fear of being seen as boastful and bragging. 6) You often sacrifice your own objectives when resisted or confronted by others (you sacrifice your musts for other people s wants). 6 Communication Level 1 - Professional Self-Esteem Assessment 7) You engage in constant vacillation (unable to make a decision or switching and changing mind after making them), you can be very fearful of making wrong choice, this includes second-guessing yourself after the fact. 8) You often feel you do not like how you look, either your face, hair, physical body, often you feel you do not look good enough in the moment to even be in the photo, you never (or rarely) want to be in pictures or have your picture taken. 9) You have an inability to accept compliments, you often or always deflect and negate positive comments about the work you ve done, how you look physically, or in your attire, etc. 10) You never or rarely put yourself in uncomfortable situations where reasonable risk is involved for fear of failing or looking bad in the eyes of others. Stretching your comfort zone is consistently something you avoid. Scorecard: 10-20: High-level of self-esteem and self-confidence 21-40: Decent level of self-esteem and self-confidence 41-60: Average level of self-esteem and self-confidence 61-80: Relatively-level of self-esteem and self-confidence : Low-level of self-esteem and self-confidence P.O Box 5094 Poughkeepsie, NY 12602
