2 Despite tourism being one of the leading industries in Moshi, there is still a large capacity gap. There are many large international organisations providing tourism services which undoubtedly benefit the local economy; however, the majority of the local people lack the knowledge and skills to fully maximize their ability to benefit directly. This capacity gap centres around language skills, marketing, finance, business and customer service skills and a lack of experience of intercultural dynamics. A low level of English is one of the major stumbling blocks; very few people have a high enough command of the English language to be employed by the larger hotels, lodges and other tourism-oriented organisations. With the help of our intern s experience we aim to address these capacity issues by providing training and education to empower local communities to develop sustainably and be in a position to capitalize on the growing tourism industry here in Moshi. As an intern, you ll play a key role in assisting in all aspects of this growth and development. You will spend time on a variety of projects, designed to increase the skillset of the local population, making them more employable and positioning them to benefit from the local tourism industry. This challenging setting will teach you a great deal about economic issues within the developing world and factors contributing to the issues such as poverty, poor working conditions and a lack of education. Recent tourism achievements include: 1. A small walking tour business successfully developed and rolled out in the village and in the town of Moshi with community members. 2. Courses on healthcare and income generation activities successfully held with WAKIPA Women s group hours of business development workshops ran over 10 weeks people trained and are all now employed in the tourism industry. 5. Establishing a well recognized and comprehensive setting that allowed volunteers and interns from all over the world to use their abilities for a greater good, while gaining practical knowledge, developing new skills a enjoying a forever life changing experience.

This internship will give you an opportunity to immerse yourself in the tourism and business world in rural communities in a developing country.

3 This internship will give you an opportunity to immerse yourself in the tourism and business world in rural communities in a developing country. However, before you take the steps to become an intern we believe it is important to ask some key questions of yourself and also from us to ensure that this internship is right for you. We will ensure that you: Work with a variety of groups in the local community, developing skills and capacity to allow them to improve their livelihoods. These groups include a small business group made up of members of the local Maasai tribe, a women s group and a group of young adults. Help develop new paths and walking tours in Tanzania with local villagers in order to provide them with better opportunities to generate income, while learning from them and the attractions surrounding this great tourism destination. Have the eye-opening opportunity to assist and empower a women s group while using your business and marketing skills so to make an impact in their income generating activities. Advance your teaching skills while providing high quality English and tourism classes to students that depend on this knowledge to be eligible for jobs in a very competitive industry. Understand how to solve daily problems that arise within your chosen field, working alongside a team that will support you along the way. Are exposed to critical thinking about how to make sure that the benefits provided by the tourism industry can be enjoyed and distributed through the local economies in impoverished communities Are you interested in? Learning about doing business in a developing economy and the profession of tourism and how it can impact and transform positively the life of different developing communities and the environment in rural Tanzania when being developed in a sustainable and ethical manner. You will spend 1-6 months living in rural Tanzania gaining hands on practical experience at grassroots levels while making an impact on different communities.

So for that and together with interns we have prepared a curriculum to fit with their English level. We also make sure each lesson has a tourism twist!

In this particular project, we support our students by developing a Maasai dance group to perform at local hotels and guesthouses.

Volunteers advise the group on how to improve their product as well as how to ensure their clients enjoy their performance as much as possible.

Community English Maasai Empowerment Walking Tours Wakipa A good level of English is one of the key requirements to be employed in the booming tourism industry in Tanzania. For that reason interns will be helping teach English to members of the community. Our aim is to provide high quality English classes so that our students finish the course with a good understanding of English that will leave them in good stead for getting a job. So for that and together with interns we have prepared a curriculum to fit with their English level. We also make sure each lesson has a tourism twist! The Maasai tribe are famous for their traditional jumping and dancing. In this particular project, we support our students by developing a Maasai dance group to perform at local hotels and guesthouses. This initiative is an effort to generate an extra income for our students who live on a low wage due to a lack of employment options. Volunteers advise the group on how to improve their product as well as how to ensure their clients enjoy their performance as much as possible. This is a great way of using your marketing, business and tourism skills. You will be working closely with a group of young individuals of the community with an interest in the tourism industry. You will be responsible for training them into developing and marketing a walking tour of the village and of the town Moshi, for potential tourists. Getting to know the area, its attractions, being creative in how to add new and appealing twists to the tours are responsibilities of our interns. Our goal is to practically train the community in the tourism industry so that they can benefit from the growing tourism industry WAKIPA (Women of Kilimanjaro together) is a women s group with whom we have partnered for over three years with the goal of empowering the group through income generating activities and education. Interns will share their unique skills with them in order to help them in a number of areas such as business, health awareness, social and gender issues. Our aim is not only to support them but also provide them with a weekly secure environment that can help them feel supported by each other.

Willingness to learn, dedication, patience and passion for intercultural exchange are a must. BE POSITIVE AND PASSIONATE Have a positive attitude and be opened to learning and working with others. We are looking for someone passionate about travelling and able to adapt to living in a new challenging environment. Living and interning in a rural town in Tanzania will bring its own unique challenges so you will also need to be patient, positive, flexible and outgoing.

7 ABOUT THE LOCATION Your time in Tanzania will offer you an authentic African experience as you live in the middle of a rural village called Msaranga. Every morning you will wake up to the unbeatable view of the Kilimanjaro Mountain and as you go about your day the gentle and friendly locals will be eager to interact, share their customs and build friendships. Dance, drumming, food, history and tribal traditions are all major components of Tanzanians vibrant culture. The climate in Moshi is generally warm and sunny, the surroundings magnificent and animals plenty. Going on a wildlife Safari while in Tanzania is a must. With some of the best National Parks in the world you can spot a wide variety of wildlife including the African Big 5. WHERE YOU WILL BE STAYING You will be staying in shared accommodation with other volunteers and interns. Rooms are comfortable but basic and you will be placed in same gender rooms. Your room will also have ensuite bathroom facilities that include a shower and toilet. They are furnished with shelves to put your clothes on and you will be sleeping on bunk beds. We have mosquito nets in the rooms.
