11 Aim and Content of Term 1 Students to be confident in examining media texts Key areas of focus for term = audience, representation, institution, media language One teacher newspapers + magazines moving onto film marketing ready for mock exam in January 2018 One teacher Start with advertising/online and marketing before moving onto Black Mirror case study - build confidence in media and introduce TV Long Form Drama Please note that case studies for units of work will depend on the exam board

Always been a success with students (contemporary and relevant to their lives) Excellent for representation and media language Netflix takeover Institution change and move towards global media Changing audience binge watching and streaming N/B be careful what episodes you show (permission slips)

13 Key Skills and Teaching Ideas for First Term Representation dependent on Institution (Newspaper front covers) Mediation fake news used as a hot topic of study + election Film Marketing Prod/Dist/Marketing/Regulation Students to learn to write, shape, edit and evaluate own work Grow student mindset Will probably not look at the actual exam until after Oct half term

15 Term 2 Introduce NEA (Jan April) School context Traditionally taught coursework from Jan April New Spec Allows flexibility in the linear two year course Student Context NEA is highly regarded by students HOD Context - Do students have the right stuff for individual NEA? Individual coursework is new to the dept (time to bed in ) Overcome student doubt in using practical equipment (next slides) Balance between Term (written focus now becomes practical)

22 Term 2 NEA Ideas Still set up blogs that we used in legacy specification Still do some old prelim tasks from that spec but also create new ones AS Media Studies Specs offer good opportunities for test prelims School creates sample Mock Brief National media competitions could be entered Remake tasks (30 seconds of a music video) After Feb half term teachers introduce the music videos and revise advertising + marketing section of the exam but through practical ideas Build student confidence in the same way as Term 1 Golden Opportunity for creativity in the linear A Level

24 AS Media Studies Strategies for teaching AS Media Time for sharing of ideas with regards to teaching AS Media as well as thinking about NEA Shenfield High School has a policy of teaching only linear A Levels

25 Linear A Level -Term 3 (April July) School Context - All students on linear A Levels have to sit an exam at the end of the first year to ascertain progress onto the full A Level Parents and students are notified of this before the course begins Students will thus return to units taught in first term and will revise Newspaper/Magazine/Film Marketing/ Advertising/Online Start NEA after June 1 st NEA = Summer half term, summer holidays + the 1st half term Yr 13

26 NEA Teaching (Term 3 and start of Term 4) Ideas here taken from OCR s Curriculum Planner Receive Brief (June 1 st n/b Eduqas Brief is available from March) Research Brief Complete research, activities and planning to complete brief This could include Pitch, locations, practicalities, target audience etc Film Edit Production of other tasks

27 Term 4 - Year 13 (Sept Dec) September - October Finish NEA (both teachers) School Context - NEA needs to be completed near the start of Year 13 Student Interventions October December One Teacher Radio One Teacher Computer Games

28 Term 5 Year 13 (Jan April) School Context Year 13 Mock exams in April need to be prepared HOD Context Need to know academic progress of students (interventions) Jan Feb Teacher 1 = Music Videos + advertising/marketing Teacher 2 = TV Long Form Drama Feb April Teacher 1 = Paper 1 Complete Revision (News+ Mag, advertising, music videos) Teacher 2 = Paper 2 Complete Revision ( Radio, Video Games, Film, TV Drama)

29 After Easter until Exams Revision classes continue - One teacher Paper 1, One Teacher Paper 2 Exemplar materials + structured revision lessons + YouTube videos Structuring essays Opening and Closing Paragraphs Individual Interventions Send off coursework Make sure students know what is expected of them in the exams Students to be confident in their preparation for exams.
