3 Course Outline This course has been designed by secondary and primary teachers and consultants to assist primary school teachers and staff in delivering interesting, creative, engaging and fun language lessons. La Rochelle, in the Charente Maritime is the base for the week of lessons and activities. The key aim of the training course is to develop knowledge and understanding of the French language and culture. The classes are led in small groups by experienced native French teachers. The lessons are suitable for all levels from beginners up to degree level as there are several teaching groups to suit each level of ability. On one of the days of the programme you will job shadow a teacher at a local, French Primary school. This will enable you to gain links with the local schools and to observe good teaching practice. This is a full immersion French course. Teachers will be provided with a variety of interesting, authentic settings. It will be possible for them to practice their French with local people. The programme of carefully structured activities and cultural visits will give participants the opportunity to learn about the local region and to gain confidence in developing the intercultural understanding element of primary foreign languages.

The course aims to: Develop the participant s knowledge of creative teaching approaches in an MFL classroom and to demonstrate useful resources.

Improve the participant s knowledge of the language therefore enabling them to grow in confidence. A key aim is to encourage the use of the target language in lessons. Assist schools and staff with the development of teaching French as a foreign language at key stage 2. Provide examples of teaching strategies and activities which encourage learning and cover the key skill areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Provide ideas and share advice on the use of ICT Provide teachers and educators with a selection of ready made teaching resources suitable for their pupils. Provide an opportunity to develop links between British and French schools with a view to setting up future projects relating to job shadowing and pupil exchange visits. This course would benefit all those who work in primary education and would be of particular appeal to: * teachers who would like to develop their teaching methodology. advisors/educators and consultants who work supporting the training of such teachers coordinators and/or senior staff who are involved in establishing the curriculum in their educational setting. non-teaching staff who have a role in assisting the primary teaching staff.

Participants create their own teaching resources to bring back to their school/centre following a discussion and ideas session around creating the most authentic resources.

5 Course Programme During the week the course leaders help the participants to develop and enhance creative teaching and learning techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to plan structured and creative programmes of study. The programme includes: : Classes on the methodology - We look at a variety of activities which can be used in both the indoor and outdoor classroom setting to engage young learners including finger rhymes, songs, art/crafts, dance, forest school, drama, stories, puppets and games. A session focusing on the key documents and important information relating to teaching MFL according to the current Primary Curriculum. A session dedicated to the planning and assessment of languages in primary schools and preparing pupils for the transition to MFL in high school. Guidance in the use of ICT in the MFL classroom to engage and motivate learners. A discussion and training session regarding high quality teaching and acknowledging different learning styles. Language teaching ideas incorporating all of the four skills: Listening, speaking, reading and writing Pre-course preparation and activities Prior to attending the course, participants will be sent a link to an online folder with a suggested reading list relating to language teaching, a link to a folder containing information on the language course element and a list of suggested apps These can be downloaded prior to the course. If you have an ipad/smart phone or device this could be used during the sessions. (It is not compulsory.)

Funding your Course The cost of the course, including course fee, assignments and support, accommodation, meals cultural excursions and travel to and from the venue, can be funded through the

6 Funding your Course The cost of the course, including course fee, assignments and support, accommodation, meals cultural excursions and travel to and from the venue, can be funded through the Erasmus+ Programme under the Key Action 1 (Learning Mobility of Individuals). The application for funding is made by the employer of the participant(s). The total cost of course is 1550 per person which includes: 6 nights accommodation in shared rooms and all meals and cultural visits. Course accommodation and activities programme Your programme includes: Accommodation in a shared twin room All training sessions are included and delivered at a teaching training centre. The cost includes all meals throughout the week, local travel and specific cultural visits and excursions as specified in the detailed programme. The grant will include transfers arranged within France. (We provide further details regarding this). Only costs specified within the programme can be included.

La Rochelle Airport (which is the closest airport ) RYANAIR direct from or via London Stansted and London Heathrow - EASYJET direct from London Gatwick and Bristol -JET2 direct from or via Leeds Bradford FLYBE direct from Manchester, Southampton and Birmingham Poitiers Airport RYANAIR direct from or via London Stansted, Bordeaux Airport: RYANAIR direct from or via London Stansted, Edinburgh EASYJET direct from or via London Luton, London Gatwick, Bristol, Liverpool, Belfast, Glasgow FLYBE direct from or via Southampton and Birmingham By Train From airports to train station This list is accurate at the time of writing. Bordeaux Airport: Take taxi or Navette shuttle bus (departs on the hour from 8am to 11pm) from the airport terminal direct to Bordeaux-St Jean train station (approx. 30 minute journey). Then take train direct to La Rochelle train station. The train journey takes approximately 3 hours. Poitiers airport There is no shuttle service between the airport and the city centre.(approx. 2.5km) When you arrive at the airport you can take a taxi to join the city center or the train station. Please remember you will need to have some cash available to pay for your transfers (all transfers can be reclaimed as part of your grant allowanceplease keep your receipts)
