1 AfterSchool Enrichment Offerings, Fall 2017 Please note that registration deadlines may be earlier for some classes. Registration procedures for each class are specified in the class description. The majority of enrichment classes begin at 3:30. Your child will check into our AfterSchool Program where they will be given a snack prior to their class. You will not be billed for your child s time while they are in enrichment offerings. If you have further questions regarding anything related to these programs, please feel free to contact Matt Schrier, AfterSchool Director at mschrier@mcgillisschool.org Hip Hop Fundamentals: Kindergarten 2 nd Grade Break dancing, rhythm, percussion, beats, groves, and a DEEJAY! Come learn the fundamentals of Hip Hop Dance while learning techniques and the roots of where it all started. Each class will begin with a warm up and jump right into dance techniques that focus on various aspects of Hip Hop. This class will wrap up with a performance showcasing the students work from the 8-week course. Instructor: Jeffrey Louizia is the Hip Hop Program Director at Millennium Dance Complex in Salt Lake City. Jeffrey is also involved with programing & leading various dance workshops and camps throughout the Salt Lake Valley. Grades: K-2 When: Fridays Time: 3:15-4:15 P.M. 4 Bad Dog Arts: Wild Things Let the wild rumpus start! The classic children s book, Where the Wild Things Are, will inspire kids to get wildly creative. Just like Max did in his bedroom, we will use our imaginations to turn the art room into the land of the Wild Things by making artwork inspired by the beloved tale. From scaly dragons to horned beasts, we will spend our time getting our claws dirty and exploring the wild world of monsters! We will use all kinds of materials to brainstorm and experiment that will help us discover the tools to construct our very own, one of a kind 2D and 3D creatures! 5 Level 1 Scratch Lab This course provides a light-hearted introduction to computers and some basic applications through the use of Scratch Lab, a user-friendly programming language for kids. The course is geared toward students who are familiar with computers, but have little to no exposure to Scratch. This is a wonderful, interactive program that ignites creativity and provides the tools to explore programming and other computational ideas. 6 STEM Challenge with LEGO Fall Session In this 9-week LEGO engineering program, students will work individually and in teams to build and design their own LEGO creations using thousands of LEGO blocks. With an all new fall curriculum, both new and returning LEGO engineers will get to explore updated projects and challenges. Students will take their LEGO engineering skills to the next level as they construct in an environment of creativity, problem solving and conceptual thought. Grades: 3-5 Instructor: Play-Well TEKnologies When: Thursdays Time: 3:30-5:00 P.M. Start Date: September 14 End Date: November 16 (no class on October 21) Total classes: 9 Fee: $ Registration: Register online at or call Spark Lab Inventors Workshop Spark that idea in your head and bring the concept to life in the Spark Lab Inventors Workshop. This offering, themed around the invention process, will challenge students to use repurposed goods and work collaboratively to create and learn about the design process. We will learn about historically important inventors, document our ideas in think tank notebooks, and roll up our sleeves to dream, draft, explore, and create. 7 Chess: Intermediate/Advanced Intermediate and advanced chess is geared towards students who already know how to play and are looking to improve their game and prepare for tournament competition. Students should already know the value of pieces, the names of the squares, and how each piece moves and captures. Students will review opening principals, improve their endgame techniques, solve tactical problems, and play practice games with fellow classmates. Emphasis will be placed on combinations, calculations, tactics, and visualization. Students will also practice using abbreviated algebraic notation and will be encouraged to notate their own games. Grades: 2-7 Instructor: Marti Olsen When: Wednesdays Time: 3:30-4:30 P.M. Wasatch Music For twelve years, both on and off campus, Wasatch Music has provided music lessons and ensemble opportunities for students in the McGillis community. Individual & group lessons are available for students exploring guitar, flute, sax, clarinet, base, or percussion. Lessons can be tailored to private or group (2-3 students) settings. Instructional duration is typically thirty minutes. All abilities welcome. 8 Magic the Gathering Strategy Magic is a strategy card game that is played worldwide. This course will provide an opportunity to learn the strategic depths of the game and by emphasizing critical thinking through examining game play and discussion. Time during sessions will be split between short lectures, discussions, and lots of playing Magic! No prerequisite knowledge of the game is necessary. Recommended grade levels: 3-6 Instructor: West Singleton Day: Mondays Time: 4:30-6:00 P.M. Please make checks payable to West Singleton FIRST Lego League: Middle School In FIRST Lego League, students experience the excitement of technical creativity and gain insights into technical fields. Participating on an FLL Team is an interactive way to explore mechanical design and computer programming while learning how to be accountable, work together as a team, and explore the notion of being a gracious professional. Throughout the process, students work through solving problems in a positive and supportive environment. In addition to Robot challenges, students will work on solving current, real-world problems through new yearly themes, guided by their coaches and community mentors. Whether it s creativity, technology, or research, FLL has what you re after. Grades: 6-8 Instructors: Jacob Weiss Day: Fridays Time: 3:30-5:30 P.M. 9 Beginning Techies Improv Life is a big improvisation. Whether it s actors making the best of mishaps on stage or techies behind the scenes frantically repairing a broken prop, the skills obtained in theater on and off stage lend themselves to those who can problem-solve and make decisions on the fly. We will paint scenery, learn how to use a digital soundboard, and learn improvisational games and skills along the way. Our efforts will culminate in a final performance showcasing accomplishments made throughout the spring. *This is an ongoing class, however spaces are now available to 4 th -8 th grade students. It requires timing, ingenuity, and trust in your tools. As we step off from beginning improvisational techniques, we will dive into long form and musical applications as well as learn more advanced forms of scene building. This class is offered for those who have completed our Beginning Techies class and are looking to take their existing skillset to the next level. *This is an ongoing class, however spaces are now available to 6 th -8 th grade students.
