1 GCE AS and A WORLD DEVELOPMENT 1 THE EXEMPLIFICATION OF KEY SKILLS The following tables give some examples of World Development contexts in which naturally occurring key skills evidence could be accumulated. The first table focuses on Communication (Level 3): the tables that follow cover all remaining key skills at Level 3. Note: If producing certain types of evidence creates difficulties due to disability or other factors, the candidate may be able to use other ways to show achievement. The candidate should ask the tutor or supervisor for further information. COMMUNICATION: LEVEL 3 C3.1a TAKE PART IN A GROUP DISCUSSION that Take part in a group discussion Make clear and relevant contributions in a way that suits their purpose and situation Respond sensitively to others and develop points an ideas Encourage others to contribute. A record from someone who has observed discussion or has made video/ audio tape of discussion. Class discussion on factors such as the management of a natural resource; an understanding of the meaning of poverty. (Themes 1-2) Debate concerning the free trade; strategies to control migration. (Themes 4, 5) C3.1b MAKE A FORMAL PRESENTATION Make a formal presentation of at least eight minutes using an image or other support material Speak clearly and adapt their style of presentation to suit his /her purpose, subject, audience and situation Structure what they say to progress logically through each stage of their presentation Use an image or other material to support or enhance what he/she is saying A record from someone who has observed discussion or has made video/ audio tape of discussion or preparatory notes with images. Topics which could form the basis of a presentation could include: Presentation on WD4, the chosen research topic. Presentation of a case study on one of the following: resource exploitation; inequality experienced by a particular group. Presentation on WD2 of the comparison of an aspect of poverty.

2 GCE AS and A WORLD DEVELOPMENT 2 C3.2 READ AND SYNTHESISE INFORMATION Read and synthesise information from at least two documents about the same subject Each document must be at least 100 words long Select and read relevant documents Identify accurately and compare the main points ides and lines of reasoning Present their own interpretation of the subject in a way that is coherent and brings together information from different documents to suit their purpose A record of what was read and why, including a note of the image. Notes, highlighted text or answers to questions about material read. Evidence of synthesising information from notes of a presentation or a written document. Research could include: Articles for WD2 on Theme 1 - Development, Resources and Global Citizenship. Articles for WD2 on Theme 2 - Poverty and Inequality. How the concept of development varies between different groups. A critique of interpretations of "development". C3.3 WRITE TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF DOCUMENTS Write two different types of documents, each one giving different information about complex subjects One document must be at least 1000 words long. Select and use a format, and style of writing that is appropriate to their purpose and complexity of the subject matter Organise material coherently to suit the length, complexity and purpose of their document Spell, punctuate and use grammar correctly Make their meaning clear. The two different documents might include an extended essay or a piece of research. Topics may be as follows: A report on wealth and poverty with an essay comparing different situations from Theme 2. An analysis of an article from Theme 1 An essay e.g. how development is affected by conflict; the importance of food security in the development process.

3 GCE AS and A WORLD DEVELOPMENT 3 APPLICATION OF NUMBER: LEVEL 3 Candidates must : Plan and carry out one or more activities that each includes tasks for all three of the N3.1, N32.(a), (b), (c) or (d) and N3.3 Overall through one or more activities, you must : use two different types of sources,including a large data, i.e. over 50 items of data (N3.1) carry out calculations to do with a, b, c and d (N3.2) present findings in two different ways using charts, graphs or diagrams (N3.3) N3.1 PLAN AN ACTIVITY AND GET RELEVANT INFORMATION FROM RELEVANT SOURCES Plan an activity and get relevant information from sources Plan how to get and use the information needed to meet the purpose of the activity Obtain the relevant information Choose appropriate methods to get the results they need and justify their choice Copies of source materials, records of information obtained. In WD4, candidates have the opportunity in planning their research to allow them to collect information from different sources. Research with reference to any particular optional theme by looking up recent information from Social Trends or appropriate government websites. N3.2 USE THIS INFORMATION TO CARRY OUT MULTI- STAGE CALCULATIONS Use this information to carry our multi stage calculations to do with: (a) (b) (c) (d) Amounts or sizes Scales or proportions Handling statistics Using formulae Carry out calculations to appropriate levels of accuracy clearly showing their methods Check methods and results to help ensure that errors are found and corrected Records of calculations for a, b, c and d showing methods and levels of accuracy and how the candidate checked the methods and results. Preparation of a summary table to show findings: calculate appropriate measures: and where necessary, show workings. For WD4 candidates will have the opportunity to demonstrate clearly their methods in undertaking multi-stage calculations. N3.3 INTERPRET THE RESULTS OF CALCULATIONS, PRESENT FINDINGS AND JUSTIFY METHODS Interpret the results of their calculations, present their findings and justify their methods Select appropriate levels of accuracy clearly showing their methods Present their findings effectively Describe what their results tell them and whether they meets their purpose Descriptions of findings and methods. Notes on how the results from the calculations met the purpose of the activity. For WD4, candidates can show their calculations in an appropriate form. In the discussion of the results, candidates should also be able to relate their findings to the significance of the investigation to development theory.

4 GCE AS and A WORLD DEVELOPMENT 4 INFORMATION and COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY: LEVEL 3 Candidates must plan and carry through a number of different tasks, one of which must be a major task covering ICT3.1, ICT3.2 and ICT3.3. Each component ICT3.1, ICT3.2 and ICT3.3 must be covered at least twice and ICT3.3 must be covered for at least two different audiences. Smaller tasks may be used to ensure each component is covered. ICT 3.1 SEARCH FOR INFORMATION, USING DIFFERENT SOURCES Search for information, using different sources, and multiple search criteria in at least one case Plan how to obtain and use information required for the task Make selections based on judgements of relevance and quality Print-outs with notes of sources and how searches made and selected information A record from someone who observed use of IT to search for and explore information. Search for data sources on the Internet and different databases, such as the Internet or CD-ROMs, to find articles and in depth research for comparative essay for WD2 Portfolio. ICT 3.2 ENTER AND DEVELOP THE INFORMATION AND DERIVE NEW INFORMATION Enter and develop explore and derive new information Enter and bring together information using formats that help development Use software features to improve the efficiency of their work Print-outs, or record of someone who observed use of IT, showing how information has been exchanged, explored and developed. Notes of automated routines. Use of Internet and s to exchange views on a contemporary text. For WD4, candidates may choose to use spreadsheets to sort and analyse statistical data that they have collected Annotate/ document their work to show that they understood the process and have taken account the views of others ICT 3.3 PRESENT COMBINED INFORMATION Present combined information such as text with image, text with number, image with number Develop the presentation so that it is accurate, clear and presented consistently, taking into account the views of others Their final output effectively using a format and style that suit their purpose and audience Working drafts or a record from an assessor who observed screen displays, showing how developed for presentation. Print-outs or a static or dynamic screen display of final work, including text, images and numbers. Present research findings forwd2 or WD4. This can include comparison of visual images in different editions of chosen texts. (The inclusion of number will depend on the particular nature of the task: for example, whether an emphasis on empirical data is appropriate in elaborating the chosen topic.) Create an illustrated presentation using an appropriate programme such as PowerPoint on a particular topic related to one relevant area of study.

5 GCE AS and A WORLD DEVELOPMENT 5 WORKING WITH OTHERS : LEVEL 3 Provide at least one example of meeting the standards for WO3.1, WO3.2 and WO3.3, to include work in a group or team situation. You must check progress on two occasions (for WO3.2). W03.1 PLAN WORK WITH OTHERS Plan work with others Agree realistic objectives for working and what needs to be doe to achieve them Share relevant information to help agree roles and responsibilities Agree suitable working arrangements with those involved Reports which explain how the candidate planned work with others. Records from someone who observed the discussion. Plan for a group of 4 or more to apply and evaluate topic areas that can include key terms applied to research in WD4. These can include primary methods such as survey or questionnaire and practical issues related to research such as piloting, and sampling. W03.2 SEEK TO DEVELOP CO - OPERATION AND CHECK PROGRESS TOWARDS YOUR AGREED OBJECTIVES Seek to develop co-operation and check progress towards their agreed objectives Organise and carry out tasks efficiently to meet their responsibilities Seek effective ways to develop cooperation including ways to resolve conflict Share accurate information on progress agreeing changes where necessary to achieve objectives Records of how the candidate organised and carried out tasks and maintained cooperative working relationships. These can include a log, statements written by others with whom the candidate worked. When working towards objectives agreed in WD4 candidates must:- Carry out the agreed research collecting and recording data as agreed in the objectives Ensure that responsibilities for information gathering are carried out by the agreed parties. Exchange data collected with other parties, review accuracy and rigour of data and discuss difficulties encountered. W03.3 REVIEW WORK WITH OTHERS AND AGREE WAYS OF IMPROVING Review work with others and agree ways of improving collaborative work in future Agree the extent to which work with others has been successful and the objectives have been met Identify factors, including your role, in influencing the outcome Statement written by the candidate and others involved in the process. Report within other on ways to improve future collaborative work. In groups, monitor and review progress made in collecting data. This can include reviewing the accuracy and rigour of information gathered, factors that influenced the investigation and ways of improving working relationships Agree ways of improving your work with others in the future, including interpersonal skills

6 GCE AS and A WORLD DEVELOPMENT 6 IMPROVING OWN LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE: LEVEL 3 Candidates must provide at least one example of meeting the standard for LP3.1, LP3.2 and LP3.3 (the example should cover at least three targets). Overall, show they can use at least two different ways of learning to improve their performance. LP3.1 SET TARGETS USING INFORMATION FROM APPROPRIATE PEOPLE Set targets using information from appropriate people and plan how these will be met Seek information on ways to achieve what they want to do, and identify factors that might affect their plans Use this information to set realistic targets and identify clear action points Records to indicate how the candidate obtained and used information to agreed targets. An action plan for an extended period of time that includes alternative courses of action and a note of support needed. An action plan created by the candidate for completion of the Individual Report that identifies targets for reaching different stages, with regular monitoring and support from the tutor Plan how they will manage their time, use support, review progress and overcome possible difficulties LP3.2 TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR LEARNING Take responsibility for their learning, using their plan you help meet targets and improve their performance Manage their time effectively to meet deadlines, revising their plan as necessary Choose ways of learning to improve their performance, working at times independently and adapting approaches to meet new demands Reflect on their progress, seeking feedback and relevant support to help them meet their targets A log of learning with notes of: How the candidate sought feedback and support and how they implemented it. Any revisions made to the plan. Records from those who have seen the work managed effectively. Produce a log of procedural research, monitoring progress and how issues and problems were dealt with.

7 GCE AS and A WORLD DEVELOPMENT 7 LP3.3 REVIEW PROGRESS AND ESTABLISH EVIDENCE OF YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS Reviewing progress and establish evidence of their achievements Provide information on the ways they have used their learning to meet new demands and on factors affecting quality of their outcomes Identify targets they have met and gather evidence of their achievement Records of information provided by the candidates on their learning and performance, including how they used learning to meet new demands. Records of discussion that show how candidates sought evidence sought evidence of their achievements and exchanged views on ways to improve performance. A record/portfolio of all tasks that have been assessed during the course of study. It includes how candidates felt that they had learnt and improved their performance as a result of feedback from others involved in the process Consult appropriate people to agree ways to further improve their performance

8 GCE AS and A WORLD DEVELOPMENT 8 PROBLEM SOLVING : LEVEL 3 Candidates must at least one example of meeting the standard for PS3.1, PS3.2 and PS3.3. The example should include exploring at least three different ways of tackling a problem (for PS3.1). PS3.1 EXPLORE A PROBLEM AND IDENTIFY WAYS OF TACKLING IT Explore a problem and identify ways of tackling it Identify, analyse and accurately describe the problem and agree with others how they will know it has been solved Select and use a variety of methods to come up with different ways of tackling the problem Description of the problem the analysis if its features and methods used for exploring it. Statements endorsed by appropriate people of how problem was going to be solved. Description of options for solving the problem. Explore and describe the problem that could include topics such as poverty and inequality; world trade; aid projects; migration; sustainable rural and urban development Comparative patterns and trends in poverty and social exclusion Compare the main feature and risks of ach approach and justify the methods they decide to use PS3.2 PLAN AND IMPLEMENT AT LEAST ONE WAY OF SOLVING THE PROBLEM Plan and implement one way of solving the problem Plan their chosen way of solving the problem and get the go-ahead from an appropriate person Put their plan into action, effectively using and feedback from others to help tackle the problem Check regularly progress towards solving the problem revising their approach as necessary Interviews, natural observation, description of risk factors and ethic of research method chosen description and justification of appropriate methods chosen. Plan one way of solving a problem that could relate to the following topics in WD2 such as: Explanations of social inequalities linked to poverty (absolute or relative) Explanation of patterns and trends in poverty and social exclusion

9 GCE AS and A WORLD DEVELOPMENT 9 PS3.3 CHECK IF THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN SOLVED AND REVIEW YOUR APPROACH TO PROBLEM SOLVING Check if the problem has been solved and review their approach to problem solving Apply systematically methods agreed with an appropriate person, to check if the problem has been solved Describe fully the results and draw conclusions on how successful they were in solving the problem Description of methods used records of review/ interview/ observations Agree and apply methods to ensure that problem has been solved Describe the results obtained from interview/observation. Collect data and interpret it to see what trends or patterns emerge from examination of problem Review your approach to problem solving, including whether other approaches might have proved more effective GCE World Development Key Skills/JD
