3 MUSIC LEADER GUIDE Lydia (Acts 16:11-15) Lower Elementary Workshop Focus: I can listen to and share what Jesus says. Keep these tips in mind as you welcome kids to the workshop and explore the story together. Each week, remember to welcome kids to the rotation. Keep in mind that for some kids, it may be the first time they are visiting your workshop! If kids have heard the story several times during previous weeks, read it again! Kids learn through repetition, and every workshop will explore the Bible story in a slightly different way. Remember that the Shepherds are there to support you as they accompany kids each week. Be sure to visit to download the Family Page for this story. Make copies of it and ask Shepherds to distribute it during the Wrap Up. Open the Bible (10 minutes) Lydia Storytelling Set Up: Make a megaphone with purple construction paper and tape. Activity Instructions Welcome to Music today! Listen to the words I am going to whisper. Whisper, Jesus loves you. Could you hear me? Listen to the words I am going to say. Say with speaking voices, Love everyone and share with others. Could you hear me a little better that time? Listen to the words I am going to say into my megaphone. Speaking into megaphone, say, God loves you forever! Could you hear me even better that time? Allow time for responses. Let s turn to Lydia on page 532 in our Spark Story Bibles. Read the story aloud. Did Lydia listen to Paul s stories about Jesus? How did she share these with others? 4 Activate Faith (25 minutes) Megaphone Mania! Set Up: Have construction paper and plenty of tape set out on tables. Practice saying Lydia s Rhythmic Phrases (found on the following page). Activity Instructions 1. Hold up the purple megaphone. What does this megaphone do to my voice when I speak into it? Could I use this megaphone for listening, or is it only for speaking? Megaphones are a lot of fun, because we can use them for listening and speaking! None Purple construction paper, 12" x 18" (30.5 cm x 46 cm), 1 per kid Tape Markers Today we will make megaphones. Why do you think we are making only purple megaphones? (Purple is Lydia s color.) Give each kid a piece of purple construction paper and ask him or her to write his or her name on it with a marker. Then show kids how to roll the paper into a megaphone and tape it to stay in place. Allow time for kids to make and experiment with their megaphones. I m going to say some things into my megaphone, and I want you to repeat them back to me using your megaphones. Say these phrases, allowing time for kids to repeat them: Today is a great day, Purple is an awesome color, We are all friends, Sunday School is cool! Let s get into partner groups and use our megaphones to speak and listen to our partners. Help kids find partners. You can use the phrases we were just saying into our megaphones with your partner, or you can make up your own things to say. Allow time for kids to experiment with their partners. 5. Invite kids to get into a circle. Now I want you to listen to me say something into my megaphone and repeat it after me, one person at a time. We ll go around the circle and give everyone a chance. The trick is to say it in the same rhythm I say it in. Ready? Choose one kid to repeat the first rhythm pattern, then continue around the circle, saying each phrase in rhythm and allowing time for each kid to repeat. Use the following phrases: Love everyone, Share with others, God loves you forever, Jesus loves you, Follow Jesus, the Son of God! Where have you heard these phrases before? (Lydia s story in the Spark Story Bible) Turn to your partner again. Use your megaphones as you try to say and repeat the phrases with different rhythm patterns. Demonstrate a new way to do one of the phrases. One way to change the rhythm is to move from a march meter (4/4) to a waltz meter (3/4). 6. How did it feel to speak into the megaphone? How did it feel to listen to someone speaking into the megaphone? Did you like speaking or listening better? Why? Allow time for discussion. 90 Workshop Leader Guides Music Workshop, Lydia Rotation Leader Guide. Spark Sunday School 2009

5 Lydia s Rhythmic Phrases Send (5 minutes) Wrap Up Remind the Shepherds to distribute the Family Page for this story if the kids haven t already received it, and come together for Wrap Up. You did a great job today with the megaphones! Like Lydia, who listened to Paul talk about Jesus, we listened to people speaking into the megaphones. Like Lydia, who told everyone about Jesus, we spread good news through megaphones. How can you listen to Jesus? How can you share stories about Jesus with other people? Allow time for responses. Family Pages None Prayer Time Invite kids to join you in Lydia s Rhythmic Phrases prayer. Dear Jesus, We listen. We learn. We spread good news. In rhythm: Love everyone (kids repeat) Share with others (kids repeat) God loves you forever (kids repeat) Jesus loves you (kids repeat) Follow Jesus, the Son of God. (kids repeat) And together we say... Amen. MUSIC Music Workshop, Lydia Rotation Leader Guide. Spark Sunday School 2009 Lydia 91

Make copies of it and ask Shepherds to distribute it during the Wrap Up. Open the Bible (10 minutes) Lydia Storytelling Welcome to Music today! Have you ever seen or listened to a TV or radio commercial and then had that music running over and over in your head for the rest of the day? Allow time for responses. I ve done that many times. Those little tunes are meant to catch your attention and stay with you, so that you ll go out and buy whatever the commercial is advertising. In our Bible story today, we are introduced to a woman named Lydia who sells beautiful purple cloth. As we read, think about the kind of information you would put into a catchy tune to advertise who Lydia is and what she s selling. Let s turn to Acts 16:11-15 on page 1224 in our Spark Bibles. Who would like to read aloud? Take turns reading the story out loud. What did you hear that you could include in a commercial about Lydia and her purple cloth? How could you share information about Lydia with other people through music in a commercial? Allow time for responses. Place a Spark Spot sticker near words you think could be in a jingle. 8 Activate Faith (25 minutes) Lydia s Jingle Generators Music in a commercial is called a jingle. A jingle is a short, catchy song that brings the listener s attention to a specific product or activity. As I mentioned, jingles are designed to stick with us, so that we remember what is being advertised and eventually make a purchase or attend the event being promoted. 1. Today we are going to create jingles to advertise Lydia and her purple cloth and to help spread the good news. Let s make a list of things about Lydia and her cloth that we think should be included in a jingle. What words did you mark with your Spark Spot stickers? Let s see if the Spark Story Bible has additional ideas. Read Lydia from page 532. Look in your Spark Bibles for ideas, too! Ask for a volunteer to list ideas as you read and kids offer ideas. Encourage brainstorming and acceptance of all ideas. (Lydia, listening, sharing God s good news, purple cloth, God loves you) Spark Bibles Spark Story Bibles Whiteboard or blackboard Marker or chalk Lydia Jingle Generator, p. 101, 1 per group of kids Pencils Now that we have our ideas, we re going to divide into groups of three and create some jingles. Divide kids into groups. Pass out a Lydia Jingle Generator to each group and a pencil to each person. Quickly review the instructions on the Lydia Jingle Generator. Your groups will have 10 minutes to create at least one new jingle about Lydia and her purple cloth. Concentrate on the words first, then the melody. If you want to use a tune that you know, go for it! If you want to make up your own melody, that s okay, too! Allow 10 minutes for kids to work together. If you are short on time, have the kids create two-line jingles instead of fourline jingles. Ask Shepherds to join you in helping groups get started. Time s up! Let s give our groups a chance to perform their jingles for everyone! Encourage all groups to perform, even though some may not have a tune quite ready and others may not have all their words completed. Accept them all and be positive about the results! Great work on the jingles, everyone! Will your jingles get people to think about Lydia and her purple cloth? Will your jingles get people to think about sharing God s love? Allow time for responses. 94 Workshop Leader Guides Music Workshop, Lydia Rotation Leader Guide. Spark Sunday School 2009

9 Send (5 minutes) Wrap Up Remind the Shepherds to distribute the Family Page for this story if the kids haven t already received it, and come together for Wrap Up. You did fantastic work on our jingles today! In our Bible story, we learned about Lydia and her purple cloth. Lydia listened to the stories and teachings of Jesus, and became someone who shared those stories with other people. How can you be like Lydia and share God s good news in your life? Allow time for responses. Family Pages None Prayer Time Choose one of the jingles. Tell kids you ll point to them when it s time to say the jingle together. Join hands and pray with me. Dear Jesus, Thank you for this day and our time together. Help us to be like Lydia so that we can listen, learn about, And share God s love with everyone. Point to kids and pray the jingle together, ending with... Amen. MUSIC Music Workshop, Lydia Rotation Leader Guide. Spark Sunday School 2009 Lydia 95

Open the Bible (10 minutes) Lydia Storytelling Play the song First Light (or drum circle track of your choice) on a CD player or mp3 player as kids enter. Welcome to Music today! Join me in listening to this recording of a drum circle. Listen to the entire piece. Do you know what a drum circle is? Allow time for responses. Drum circles are groups of people who sit in a circle and play drums and other percussion instruments with their hands. They give everyone a chance to create and play rhythm patterns back and forth to one another. A drum circle usually has a leader, and often people in the circle take turns being the leader. In a few minutes you will play in a drum circle as part of the group and then as a leader. The Bible story we will read is about a woman named Lydia who listens to the words of God and teachings of Jesus, and then decides to become a leader and share God s word with everyone. Let s turn to Lydia on page 532 in your Spark Story Bibles or to Acts 16:11-15 on page 1224 in your Spark Bibles. Ask for volunteers to take turns reading the story aloud. How was Lydia a part of the group? How was Lydia a leader? Allow time for responses. Place a Spark Spot sticker near a place where Lydia was a leader. 12 Activate Faith (25 minutes) Drum Circle! Set Up: Arrange chairs in a circle, and put a hand drum or other percussion instrument that can be played with hands on each chair. Be sure to have enough for everyone. Enter homemade percussion instruments in your favorite Internet search engine to find directions for instruments kids can make. Practice the suggested Drum Circle rhythm patterns or determine patterns you will use. Activity Instructions Ask each kid to move to a chair with an instrument and hold it quietly in his or her lap. It s time for us to play in a Drum Circle. We will all take turns being part of the group and being the leader. None Purchased or homemade hand percussion instruments such as hand drums, tambourines, bongos, conga drums, gathering drums, etc First of all, let s learn what these instruments are called and how to play them. Quickly demonstrate how to play each different instrument. Now it s time for us to have some practice time with our instruments! Encourage the kids to try playing their instruments all together. It will sound chaotic! Remind kids to play their instruments musically, and not just bang. In our first round of Drum Circle, I will be the leader. I want you to play back to me the rhythm I play to you, like an echo. Use a larger drum such as a gathering drum (a large, round drum that sits on the floor) or conga drum and play a simple, short rhythm pattern for kids to echo. Repeat this several times, using the same pattern or changing patterns. Keep it simple! 98 Workshop Leader Guides Music Workshop, Lydia Rotation Leader Guide. Spark Sunday School 2009

13 3. 4. Let s give you a chance to switch instruments. When I say, Switcheroo, you will set your instrument on the chair you are sitting on, move one chair to your right, pick up that instrument, and sit in your new chair. Ready? Switcheroo! Allow more time for this the first couple of rotations. Younger kids will need more help in understanding where to move, but they will quickly pick it up. Continue being the leader as the kids rotate around the Drum Circle, trying new instruments. Great job with our Drum Circle so far! Now it s your turn to be the leader! We ll continue rotating around the circle, but this time whoever is next to me will move into the leader spot and I will move around the circle like everyone else. Here are some quick hints on how to be a good leader: make your patterns simple and not too long, play with confidence, and have fun! Kids continue to rotate around the Drum Circle, taking turns being the leader until all have had a turn. Some kids will feel very shy about this type of improvisation. Encourage them to try it anyway, and remind them that whatever they play is great! Tell them that they can keep playing the same pattern several times if they want to! 5. Collect the instruments. How did it feel to be a part of the group during Drum Circle? How did it feel to be the leader? What was easier being a part of the group, or being the leader? What was harder? Why? Allow time for discussion. Send (5 minutes) Wrap Up Remind the Shepherds to distribute the Family Page for this story if the kids haven t already received it, and come together for Wrap Up. Family Pages You did a wonderful job in our Drum Circle! We learned about Lydia, a follower of Jesus who became a leader and told everyone about Jesus. You were leaders and followers in the Drum Circle. This week, watch for chances to lead others in ways that spread God s love and for chances to follow others who show that love. None MUSIC Music Workshop, Lydia Rotation Leader Guide. Spark Sunday School 2009 Lydia 99

14 Prayer Time Begin a quiet and slow heartbeat on one of the drums. Invite kids to join you by quietly patting their chests as you pray. Dear Jesus, Thank you for this day and our time together in Drum Circle. Help us to be like Lydia so we can listen and learn about you, And help us to be leaders and share your love with other people. Amen. 100 Workshop Leader Guides Music Workshop, Lydia Rotation Leader Guide. Spark Sunday School 2009

15 Lydia Jingle Generator People in Your Group Create four lines in your jingle about Lydia and her purple cloth. These lines may rhyme or not rhyme that s up to you. Think about the best way for the words to advertise who Lydia is and what she is selling. Try to make the words catchy and fun! Line 1: Line 2: Line 3: Line 4: Now think of a tune for your jingle. You can use a tune that you already know or make up a tune of your own. Practice your jingle together! Get ready to perform it for everyone in our workshop today!
