Welcome! Beginnings are important. The O Guide is designed to help you adjust to, enjoy, and succeed in your life while studying at the University of Adelaide. Inside it, you will find information on University services, accommodation, banking institutions, how to get around Adelaide, and the program for our Orientation Program. Ninna Marni Ninna Marni - a Kaurna phrase for Hello, how are you? In welcoming you to Adelaide, the University would like to acknowledge that the Kaurna People are the original inhabitants of the land where the first campus of the University was built, and we would like to acknowledge these lands are the traditional lands for Kaurna people and that we respect their spiritual relationship with the country. We also acknowledge the Kaurna people as the custodians of the Adelaide region and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living Kaurna people today. How To Use This Guide This Guide has two main sections. Section One provides general information you will likely find useful as you settle into life at Uni. Section Two provides you with detailed information about our Orientation Program. Orientation Program 20 July - 24 July Section One - Getting Started In this section you will find information on University services, IT Support, Clubs & Associations, the Adelaide University Union, the Fitness Hub, Adelaide University Sport events and clubs, public transport in Adelaide, Australian banking institutions, mobile phone and internet providers, accommodation, and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). The Welcome Centre The Welcome Centre is located in The Backstage Café in the Schulz Building. Opening Hours: 9.30am-4.00pm from Monday 20 July until Thursday 23 July At the Welcome Centre you can: - sign up for events - meet for social programs - ask questions of staff and Peer Mentors; and - meet other students Our Peer Mentors are available to offer guidance and a friendly welcome! Section Two - Orientation Program In this section you will find a timetable of events, workshops, and information sessions that will be held during the Orientation Program. All new students are required to attend their Arrival Briefing Session and international students are also required to attend a Stay Safe Session. These sessions include essential information on University requirements. Coursework students who have not yet enrolled will need to attend a How to Enrol workshop, preferably before your scheduled Enrolment Advice Session (see Enrolment Guide for details). The program is designed in a modular format. Most workshops and presentations are repeated throughout the program; you only need to attend one of each session. Don t forget that you need to sign up for some tours and social programs at the Welcome Centre. There is a blank timetable at the end of this publication to record your schedule. Students who invest their time and energy to become familiar with the University at the beginning are often the most successful. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to participate in the program. Signing Up! During the Orientation Program, some workshops, social programs and tours have limited capacity, so make sure you sign up in the Welcome Centre to secure your place. Look for this symbol to see which events you need to sign up for! A balance of social and academic activities will enable you to engage purposefully and quickly with the University of Adelaide. We look forward to supporting you in achieving your goals! 3

Getting Settled Mobile Phones If you want to get a mobile phone, here are some things to remember. Step 1 When setting up a SIM card in Australia you should first research different phone companies. Some mobile phones allow dual-sims, which means you can instal 1 SIM card for local calls and 1 SIM card for international calls! Step 2 Make sure you provide identification such as a photgraphic ID (passport), a current residential address, and a current phone number so that you can purchase a SIM card or phone. Banking Step 3: Make sure that you take identification documents to the provider in case they require them. These could be your passport, your visa, your bank account statements, ATM card, Insurance card, utility bills in your name (such as water bills or electricity bills), credit cards and a driver s license. The provider will give you a full list of acceptable forms of identification. Some companies offer better rates for international calls. Some offer better rates for local calls. Step 4 You can now purchase the SIM card or phone you desire to communicate with your family and friends in your home country as well as Australia. When choosing a bank or financial institution, such as a credit union, find out if they have a branch or ATMs (Automatic Teller Machines) located near to where you live and / or study. Make sure you know their account keeping fees and service charges. Every bank offers a keycard account, which is suitable for your day-to-day needs. These accounts allow you to deposit, withdraw, and transfer money from ATMs or use EFTPOS. Other methods of banking available to you include Internet and phone banking. Ask your bank for more information. The University does not recommend one bank over another. Please note: Most banks will charge a fee if you withdraw money from an ATM that isn t from your own institution (i.e. you may be charged if you have a Commonwealth ATM card, but withdraw money from a BankSA ATM). Student Accounts Most banks and credit unions offer student accounts with lower fees (and lower rates of interest). You will need to show the bank your student ID or Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) when you open the account or very soon after. Make sure to ask if they have any limitations, such as maximum amounts on daily withdrawals. Opening a bank account To open a bank account, you will need to complete a 100-point identity check. To do this you will need to provide identification, such as your passport, student card, Birth Certificate, and / or driver s license, credit card, telephone or electricity bill. Some Local Mobile Phone Providers Please Note: these are only some of the local providers and the University does not recommend one provider over another. You should research each provider before making your choice. International Students Many Schools and Faculties run enrolment advice sessions for international students arriving in July. Please refer to the Enrolment Guide for International Coursework Students to find information on where you can go for enrolment advice. Enrolment is an online process. In order to enrol, you will need to select the correct classes, tutorials, lectures, practicals, seminars, or workshops, as appropriate for your program. Before you enrol, you should visit the How Do I Enrol? section of our website to find the seven steps to enrolment: There is also a How to Enrol session held during the Orientation Program. Already forgotten your password? Just Ask Adelaide! Level 3 Hub Central Am I A Full Time Student? Good question! The difference between being a full time student and a part time student can be significant. Not least because part time students do not have access to all of the discounts and concessions that full time students are entitled to. What s more - it can have a serious impact if you are studying on a student visa! The standard full time load is 12 units per semester or 9 units per trimester Some students do more and some do less, but in order to receive a full-time student card this semester you will need to be enrolled in a minimum of 9 units - any less and you will be a part time student. IMPORTANT NOTE FOR STUDENT VISA HOLDERS!!! As a student visa holder it is important that you plan to complete your studies within the duration of your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Your CoE was created on the basis of a standard full time study load of 12 units per semester. If you enrol in only 9 units in a semester you must make up the 3 units you are short in an alternate enrolment period, such as winter or summer school, or by overloading in a subsequent semester - this is not always possible in every program! If you are unsure of how to manage your enrolment load so that you can complete within your CoE duration, please consult a Program Advisor at your School or Faculty. Already enrolled? You can change your enrolments online right up until 10 August

International students are welcome to attend, though please be aware that international students studying here on student visas will have to consider the implications of such a program on their visa status. Aussie Cultures (90 min) Are the stereotypes about Australian attitudes and ideas true? Or is the reality very different? This workshop dips its toes into indigenous culture, history, geography, sports, the arts, language, and culture. A short quiz will test your chance of survival here in Australia and give you some insight into what is important to the locals. A must if you want to mix with the locals. Come and have fun with Aussie slang! Understanding the University Learning Environment (50 min) An introduction to the academic environment, the University s expectations and managing your studies. We will explore some of the common issues students face as they adjust to the expectations of Uni life including working with others and becoming an independent learner. Budgets & Bargains (50 min) Need to watch your money? Planning for a holiday in the break or at the end of term? Living on a tight budget can be difficult. This workshop helps you to develop a budget plan and gives ideas on how to stick to it. It includes tips on finding cheap goods (or as we say in Australia, bargains ). Looking for Work (50 min) This workshop by the Employment Officer will talk about where to look for work, how to go about applying; and your rights and responsibilities as an employee. If you are planning to work this workshop is essential. If you re studying on a student visa, make sure you know your work rights! Career Planning (50 min) It s never too early to start thinking about your career. The Careers Service will discuss career planning strategies to help you get the job you want when you graduate. Visa Options Following Study (50 min) Are you thinking of staying on in Australia after your studies? It s never too early to plan ahead! An International Student Centre Compliance Officer will let you know some of the visa options that may be available to students once they have finished their studies. Please be advised that visas and visa conditions can change at any time, and that information presented at this talk will be correct at the time but may change dramatically between now and the time you graduate.

Orientation Sessions University Rebooted (50 min) Have you had a break from study? Not sure how to get back into the swing of it? Not everyone enters University straight after high school, and some people return to University after previous study. Settling back in can be a bit of an adjustment, and this session will give you some tips on remembering what it s like to be a student again. Thriving at Uni (50 min) There are many factors that contribute to being successful at University it s not all about time spent with textbooks! This session will cover several aspects of mental and physical health and wellbeing along with the role of your doctor, all designed to make your time here happier, healthier and more productive! It will also introduce you to UniThrive! As a sample of the types of things you ll find over at UniThrive, here s some information about the Yerkes Dodson Law (found in the Stress area of UniThrive). How Our Bodies React to Stress Succeeding with Maths and Statistics at Uni (60 min) In many of your courses, you will have to interpret mathematical or statistical information, or learn new mathematical concepts. This session will give useful advice on how to succeed in these areas, including how to find out more information, how to attack assignment questions, and how to get help with your maths and statistics. Yerkes and Dodson found that performance increases with arousal to an optimal level. Once this level is reached performance, in fact, reduces if arousal or stress is further increased. So in short, too much or too little stress is not good for us. An easy way to think of this is using a scale of Nominally between 0 and 4 you are not sufficiently aroused, or stressed enough to perform well; between 4 and 8 you reach optimal levels of stress and perform well; beyond 8 and up to 10 you are becoming too stressed and will be unable to perform effectively or well. Writing and Study Skills Sessions During Orientation, the Writing Centre will be running the following sessions: Meeting the University s Expectations for Study (60 min) The University expects you to prepare for and participate in learning activities, manage your time, and have academic integrity when you do assignments. This session will cover these expectations and strategies to meet them to get the most out of your classes and assignments. Writing Essays (60 min) In many courses at University you will be expected to write essays for your assignments, and these may be different from essays you have written in the past. This session will cover the main sections of an essay, the importance of referencing and making an argument in your own voice. Studying in English (60 min) It takes organisation and commitment to study several courses in English when it is not your first language. This session will cover strategies you can use to manage this process and to continually improve your English. It will also show several selfaccess resources you can use to keep learning. Worth thinking about when you re stressed about your exams or worried about doing something for the first time; some stress is good but try not to let it take control! And there s information on UniThrive on how to do that too. Check out UniThrive online: The maths session is for anyone who deals with maths even in a small way, in any course not just those doing a maths course. 15

Orientation Social Program Presented by the Peer Mentors Meet Your Mentors The Peer Mentors have been there, done that, and got the T-Shirt to prove it! Not only have they been exactly where you re standing right now, they ve also been trained to help orientate new students to University life. If you ve got any questions - ask a Mentor! Mentor Pub Night COST: Your own dinner / drinks [Meet at the Welcome Centre] What better way to get to know Adelaide than by venturing forth to one of our most iconic pubs? The Austral is an Adelaide institution. Our peer mentors will show you the way. Meet the Mentors (Cafe Night) COST: Your own coffee / snacks [Meet at the Welcome Centre] An opportunity to socialise with the ISC s Peer Mentors over a cup of hot chocolate at a cafe on Rundle Street. Mentor Movies What better way to combat the cold than by staying in and watching a movie? Watching an Aussie movie or two, that s how! All are welcome! Pancake Breakfast Welcome BBQ What better way to start off your day? Before diving into your Orientation Program events, come and join us for pancakes. You learn better with a full stomach! Aussies are really fond of the BBQ (barbie) - even when it s cold! The Adelaide University Union and the International Student Centre (ISC) host this popular event. A chance to meet current and new students and enjoy a traditional Aussie BBQ on Pfitzner Court lawns. Halal and vegetarian options are available. Aussie BBQ Protocol The BBQ host may send invites requesting guests to bring a salad, or a particular type of meat. The host will determine which type of food each guest should bring, to ensure that there is no duplication. Check to make sure that you re not doubling up with your food! Wear shorts. Most importantly, make sure you have sun screen on!!! Wear a hat. Make sure it covers the tops of the ears. We recommend wearing thongs in summer. Never forget your protective footwear! Zinc cream is to be applied to the nose and cheeks. Having a beach cricket set at a BBQ can come in handy, just in case you get the urge for a hit. Always bring an Esky (portable cooler). It keeps drinks icy cold and can double as a chair, in a pinch. 16

Orientation Social Program Presented by Quiz Night Wednesday 22 July Eclipse Room, Level 4, Union House Doors open 4:30pm. Start 5pm At the Cloisters Friday 31 July The Cloister Courtyard 4:30pm - 10:30pm Student Life with the Union and AU Sport (50min) Want to make the most of your time at University, meet new people and try new things? If the answer is yes, then you need to get along to this presentation and find out about activities and events for you to join. Hear about the Adelaide University Union (the Union), Sporting Clubs, the Fitness Hub, Special Interest Clubs, and more! You will also hear about special events happening on campus throughout the semester. Don t miss the biggest competition on the orientation calendar, the infamous University Quiz Night. The Adelaide University Union presents a night of Australian and world trivia, games and challenges. Join a table, meet fellow students and put your collective brainpower together in the race to be crowned quiz champions. There are fantastic prizes on offer, and the opportunity to learn some interesting and quirky local facts. This event is very popular so get in early and get set for the biggest night of your University life. Free snacks and drinks will be provided to each table to keep you in top quiz condition. We look forward to seeing you on the night. At The Cloisters is the ultimate University event and the ideal way to start semester two. The legendary Cloisters courtyard has hosted decades of huge outdoor concerts and events, and once again it is set to come alive for an event unlike any other on campus. This year our design team will transform the Cloisters into a leafy, green garden utopia featuring gourmet food, custom furniture, a pop-up bar and an outstanding line-up of live music. Tickets are available from com.au, Union Offices, The General and the Welcome Centre. Tickets to the event include dinner at no extra charge. Victor Harbor Day Trip Friday 24 July, 2015 (Meet at Gate 9, 8:30am sharp) A great day of adventure! Tickets are limited, so book early - purchase at the Pop Up Shop! We travel by bus to Victor Harbor stopping at Urimbirra Wildlife Park. You get the chance to see more than 70 species of Australian fauna in their natural surroundings. Amidst giant old gum trees you will see kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, emus, dingos and wombats. Whilst on the lake, pelicans, spoonbills, black swans, egrets and Cape Barren geese can be readily seen. The paths through the park allow you to see the animals at close range, and a leisurely walk through the 16-hectare site is a photographer s delight. Everyone will have the opportunity to explore the seaside town of Victor Harbor, and walk the long jetty over to Granite Island. On Granite Island you can walk the Kaiki Trail. An initiative of the Ngarrindjeri Community Development Program, the Kaiki Trail is a meeting place of cultural history and natural history. The Ramindjeri people s name for the landform, Kaiki holds great Aboriginal significance. On the 2.9km trail you ll encounter the dreamtime story in which Ngurunderi travels down the River Murray in search of his two wives, throwing his reed spear (his Kaiki ) and creating the landscape that now surrounds Victor Harbor. The granite boulders and crashing waves make for a very special backdrop. You can bring your lunch and picnic in one of the parks, or try one of the many cafes. Booking Tickets Purchase online, or at the Pop Up Shop in Hub Central Cost Individual One Seat - $10.00 Family First Seat - $10.00 Second Seat - $10.00 Any Additional Seats - $5.00 each eg: A family of four will cost $30.00 ($10 each for the first 2 seats and $5 each for the additional 2 seats) 17
