1 Summer Class Options ~ Join in the Learning Fun! Phonics and Kindergarten Readiness: Stories and Skills for Fours and Fives: Give your preschooler a jump-start to learning and fun with a shared love of books! Various preschool favorite titles will be read and explored. Students will be introduced to phonetic skills including identifying letters and sounds, number sense and fine motor skills through repetitive games and activities. Weekly newsletters and reinforcement games will be sent home to ensure early pre-reading success! Kindergarten Push: Start off Kindergarten on the right foot by giving your child this academic boost! Kindergarten reading and writing skills will be reinforced through leveled books, skill based games and phonetic reinforcement. Learning apps, explore it and word-building activities will also be incorporated. Cover the kindergarten musts to ensure readiness for their big first day! Academic updates and reinforcement activities will be given after each session. Elementary Class Options: (Grades 1-5) ~ Prevent the Summer Slide Keeping it Fresh Grade Level Reinforcement: (First through Fifth Grade) Get together with a group of friends to benefit from this small group-tutoring environment. Academic support in reading and math will be reinforced weekly to ensure readiness for the next school year. This grade level reinforcement is a fun alternative to keep your child learning and working over the summer. Summer Book Clubs: Weekly book clubs will be offered based on book titles your child will love! Book Club is a great way to get your child s friends together and keep them reading over the summer. Writing extensions, discussion questions, summarizing tips and reading responses will be incorporated into this class. We will choose a title that your child will love based on interest and reading level. Students enjoy making our book come alive through student choice book projects presented at our last session! Super Stem Fun~ New Learning Opportunity! Come discover learning through exploration of the design process, questioning, Brain Games and More! Each week your child will stretch their thinking by exploring different elements of Personalized Learning. questioning, peer feedback, self-assessment and documentation and reflecting through hands on activities! Students will Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve and Present! Students will learn from each other and make improvements on their designs! This fun thought provoking class will keep your children WONDERING throughout the summer and beyond! Come explore with us! States and Capitals Exploration- Get to know our Fifty States and Capitals by exploring the five regions of our Country! Experience the states through games, interactive learning apps and repetitive map practice. Join in the learning fun and Show what You Know as you master this challenge. Executive Functioning Refresher: (Fifth Grade and Up) Six sessions packed with organization, executive functioning tips and study skill strategies. This class will focus on skills that your child will use throughout their schooling and their lives. Skills that are covered in this class include: Time management strategies Goal setting Note-taking skills Test taking strategies and tips Using a calendar, planner and infinite campus *Summer book clubs and Stem Exploration are fun for all age groups ~ First through Fifth Grade*

2 Writing and Grammar Class Options: (Grades 2-5) My Wonders through Writing: Writer s workshop plus more! Create a culture for writing that your child will love! Explore writing through student choice. Kids will create a writing portfolio based on their interests and wonders. We will also focus in on narrative and expository writing. Graphic organizers, editing and revising tips as well as shortcuts to successful writing will be included in this class. Hot Topics ~ Helpful Helpers: Each week we will focus on a different Hot Topic to ensure learning success! Helper resources will be provided for each topic to reference during the next school year. Grammar basics and usage Frequently misspelled words Using a graphic organizer Shortcuts to gather evidence from written text Revising and editing steps within writing pieces The how to of paragraph writing Managing Non-Fiction Text through Reading and Writing: (4th-6th Grades) *This class will be offered twice / week in June only. We will coordinate a time with a group of an interested group of four or more students. Based on Illinois learning standards, this class will expose your child to more complex non-fiction text. Give your child the advantage to manage these rising standards in both reading and writing. This class will highlight the following areas: Comparing and contrasting non-fiction text Use of evidence based terms within your written responses to state your claim Formulate an opinion writing as a response to a nonfiction article Construct an informational written essay **Save your spot by responding to this . Scheduling group times that work for all can be challenging. If you have a group of friends you d like your child to work with, please let me know as soon as possible your preference of day, time (morning or afternoon) and interested people in your group. If you don t have a friend request, please specify the class or classes your child is interested in taking and your time preference. I will do my best to accommodate your requests. Classes will be held once per week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings as well as Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Classes will be held the week of June 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, July 9th and 16th. Cost of six-week class is $120, $20/one hour session Family discount opportunities, share between siblings ~ Take two classes; get the third class half off! Classes are held in my classroom in my Barrington home. Classes are based on the grade your child will be in next fall. 3 Summer Class Options for Intermediate Learners Intermediate Classes: Fourth Grade through Middle School Grades Engaging Class Options: Executive Functioning Refresher: Six sessions packed with organization, executive functioning tips and study skill strategies. This class will focus on skills that your child will use throughout their schooling and their lives. Skills that are covered in this class include: Time management strategies Goal setting Note-taking skills Test taking strategies and tips Using a calendar, planner and infinite campus Wonders, Research, Presentation and More! Learn the fundamentals and the how to of putting together a project from start to finish! Researching tips, organizational helpers, exploratory research apps and tips for presenting your final product. Research a Wonder that you are curious about and let me guide you through the process! Summer Stem Exploration- New Learning Opportunity!: Come discover learning through exploration of the design process, questioning, Brain Games and More! Life Sharpeners: This class will expose your child to different social topics our children are faced with. Give your child the advantage of learning how to navigate unexpected situations. This class will provide background knowledge, tips and strategies to face these challenges and succeed in their everyday lives. The themes and activities we will focus on include the following topics. Each week will be a different theme. Time management tips and use of a calendar to prioritize tasks both in school and in your personal life Reading strategies to increase comprehension and helpful study apps for success with test preparation and daily assignments Taking control of your current and future goals Influences of social media and effects of bullying Navigating relationships, handling peer pressure and making decisions that are right for you Stress management Managing Non-Fiction Text through Reading and Writing: Illinois has adopted new learning standards, which exposes your child to more complex non-fiction text. Give your child the advantage to manage these rising standards in both reading and writing. This class will be offered in June only, twice a week. We will coordinate a day and time with an interested group of four or more students. 4 Master the how to of paragraph writing **Ask about Spanish and Middle and High School Math Preview Class Options with an interested group of four or more students** Returning Class Favorites: Summer Book Clubs: A Favorite for Kids! New and returning titles to choose from! Weekly book clubs will be offered based on Rebecca Caudill titles your child will love! Book Club is a great way to get your child s friends together and keep them reading over the summer. Writing extensions, discussion questions, notetaking tips and reading responses will be incorporated into this class. We will choose a title that your child will love based on their interest and reading level. Steps and guidelines will be provided to put together a final book presentation for our last session. Peer feedback and self-assessment will be included in this learning process. Organizational Management and Study Skills Classes: Middle School Readiness! Coming in August! A must for future sixth graders as well as students who need additional help in the organizational department! This class will focus on skills that your child will use throughout their schooling and their lives. We will focus on time management strategies, goal setting, note-taking skills, test taking strategies and tips, summarizing, using a calendar, planner and infinite campus. I will offer this class in conjunction with our District s Camp Sixth Grade as a three-day class as well as a weekly summer class if the dates offered do not work with your schedule. (See above class description for Executive Functioning Refresher) Our District s Camp Sixth Grade is now a two-day class, which will take place August 14 th and 15th. Both morning and afternoon sessions will be offered the same days as the District s Camp Sixth Grade to ensure readiness for their new learning journey. Taking these two classes together is a wonderful way to feel prepared, confident and ready for the transitions that occur that first week of Middle School. Cost of this four-hour class is $80. My class will be divided into three, eighty-minute sessions, August dates to be announced. **Save your spot by responding to this . 5 Middle School Readiness Class Get your Future Sixth Grader Prepared, Organized and Feeling Confident about Sixth Grade by taking this Class! Organizational Management and Study Skills: A must for future sixth graders as well as students who need additional help in the organizational department! This class will focus on skills that your child will use throughout their schooling and their lives. We will focus on the following: Time management strategies Goal setting Note taking skills Test taking tips and preparation Summarizing and finding the main idea within the text The importance of study environment Tips on how to use a calendar, planner and infinite campus This class will be offered the same days as District 220 s Camp Sixth Grade Dates (August 14 th -15 th.) My class will offer three, eighty-minute morning or afternoon sessions (August 14 th, 15 th and 16 th ) to ensure readiness for their Middle School start. I will also offer this class as a six-week summer class.
