1 Pierce College at Joint Base Lewis-McChord Course Syllabus Course dates: September 24 November 23 COURSE TITLE: Spanish 121 Hybrid ABBREVIATION: SPAN 121 CREDIT HOURS: 5 LECTURE CONTACT HOURS: 25 INSTRUCTOR: Sra. Connie Sanders INSTRUCTOR INTRODUCTION: Allow me to introduce myself. I have been teaching Spanish at Pierce College since Studying foreign languages and cultures are one of my greatest passions. My hope is that some of that passion will rub off on you. In regards to my philosophy of education, I believe in working hard and having fun. With that in mind, I have created a challenging course for you that has some difficult and some fun activities. Although I am not a native Spanish speaker, learning languages have been a part of my life for the past 30 years! In high school, I took all 4 years of Spanish. Then, in 1985, I lived as an exchange student in Culiacán, Sinaloa, México for one year. While there, I attended an all-girls Catholic high school and taught English classes in the evenings. After returning from México, I joined the Air Force and studied Russian at the Defense Language Institute. Several years ago, my husband and I had the opportunity to spend one week in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. While there, we were able to visit some National Parks and participate in some fun recreational activates like zip-lining and river rafting. Currently we are planning our next big trip either to Europe or to Panamá. My academic credentials include: BA of Arts from Washington State University, Pullman, Washington (Major: Spanish, Minor: Russian) Defense Language Institute, Monterey, California (Russian Linguist) MA in Education from the University of Washington Tacoma, Washington COMMUNICATIONS: Through conversations via the course inbox inside of Canvas or through the Pierce College system at csanders@pierce.ctc.edu PRE-REQUISITES: none CATALOG DESCRIPTION: A first-year sequential course to give the student the ability to speak, read, write and understand Spanish. REQUIRED TEXT AND MATERIALS: This course uses Open Educational Resources, meaning all material will be made available to you at no cost. I will provide instructions on accessing the material in the course. COURSE GUIDANCE: ~

2 1. Online Elements: All of the practice activities, s and exams in this course will be provided to the students online, in Canvas. 2. Proctoring: This course may have online proctoring required for assessments. I will furnish proctoring information very early in the course so you can make necessary arrangement well in advance of the proctored assessment(s). 3. Course Guidelines for Communication: You can expect me to... 1) respond to your within 48 hours. 2) grade your s within four (4) days after the s due date or (4) days from the date that you submit them. 3) provide feedback to your s in the Rubrics or in the "add a comment" section of the. Please contact me if you do not understand why you have missed a question, if you suspect that a question s answer may be programmed incorrectly or if you think that I have not added up a score correctly. However, please do not contact me to dispute the amount of points that your received or to re-do an because you do not like the score. 4. Introductions: Students are expected to post a short (one paragraph) introduction to the course Discussions Area during the first week of the course. I have guidelines within the course for the introduction located in the Getting Started Module. 5. Discussions: This course may have discussions as part of the curriculum. Students may also desire to discuss topics with other students in an unscheduled manner. I, as part of the course, may publish discussion questions/topics and require your input. Should you desire to hold a discussion with other students enrolled in your course, you may be authorized to create your own discussion topics. 6. Plagiarism: You may receive a 0 grade for a section on the exams if I suspect that you may have used an online translator to answer the questions. Plagiarism software may be in use during your course. 7. Etiquette: Etiquette for the classroom discussions is..treat others as you would like to be treated, respectfully and compassionately. If you have any question about what etiquette is, please visit the following website for more details 8. Course Incompletes: On the last day of the course, the grades will be calculated. Please follow the suggest course end dates so that you will be able to finish the course within the 9 weeks. Incomplete grades are NOT automatically granted to students in this course except for under a few, rare, circumstances*. *In a few, rare, cases, a student may need extra time beyond the end date due to circumstances beyond his/her control. In order to get an Incomplete in this course, you must have submitted all of the s, quizzes and exams on a weekly basis from week 1 to week 7 (not turned in several weeks worth of work in one week) by the end of week 8. You must provide a valid reason for needing additional time beyond the 9 weeks. I may request supporting evidence from you for your reason such as military orders or

3 medical statements. Your request for an Incomplete with extra time of no more than 2 weeks goes through me, your instructor. I will help you in every way I can to complete this course. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. You are encouraged to come to each class session. We will meet one day per week for 2 ½ hours. You will also need to make time (3-6 hours per week) to study and complete their course work outside of the classroom setting. 2. You are encouraged to take advantage of the 2 hours of free tutoring per week/per subject on the Ft. Steilacoom and Puyallup campuses or create your own study groups. 3. You are encouraged to keep track of your true grade by unchecking the phrase calculate based only on graded s on the right side of the Grade page. By doing this, the s and exams that have not been completed will be marked with a 0 grade. 4. You are encouraged to complete the items in each module in order. 5. You are encouraged to make your presentations in class so that you do not run into any technological issues with uploading video files. If you are not able to make your presentation in class on the due date, you will need to record a video and upload it into Canvas to receive credit for the. COURSE COMPONENTS: This course consists of: WEEK 1 Course Introduction There will be a discussion post in which you will tell us a bit about yourself and greet another student during the first day of class. I will grade the discussion post. Getting Started There will be 1 Getting Started quiz during the first day of class. The quiz will assess your knowledge of the information that you will find in Canvas in the Module Zero and on the course syllabus. The computer will grade the Getting Started quiz. You will be given multiple opportunities and 30 minutes to work on the quiz. Pronunciation Mini-zes There will be 8 mini-quizzes during Week 1. The mini-quizzes will assess your knowledge of the new vowel and consonants sounds and general punctuation rules (including the correct use of stress and accents marks). While taking the quiz, the students will answer some true/false, multiple-choice and fill-in the blank type questions. The computer will grade all of 8 mini-pronunciation quizzes.

4 You will be given multiple opportunities and 30 minutes to work on the mini-quizzes. WEEKS 2-8 Weekly Writing Assignment During Weeks 2-8, you will be given a mini-paragraph in Spanish. You will need to read the paragraph for understanding and then replace all of the underlined word(s) with similar word(s) from your vocabulary list(s). I will grade the sentences in the mini-paragraph. Weekly zes During Weeks 2-8, there will also be 2 types of quizzes. There will be a short listening comprehension quiz and a longer lesson quiz. You will answer the following types of questions: true/false, fill-in the blanks, matching and multiple-choice questions over the new grammar and vocabulary taught in that lesson. The computer will grade the quizzes. You will be given unlimited opportunities and unlimited time to work on the quizzes The computer will only record your highest score. Therefore, you are encouraged to take the quiz at least 2 times before the due date or until you are pleased with your highest score. After the first submission, you will be able to see the correct answers. The weekly presentations below are designed to be completed at the end of class session. If you are unable to make your presentation at the end of class, you will need to record the presentation and upload it inside the in Canvas. Weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8 Presentations Questions and Answers presentations There will be 4 recorded presentations during Weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8. You will first listen to me dictate 5 questions to you in Spanish. After writing the 5 questions down on a 3x5 card or ½ sheet of paper, you will record yourself repeating each question and answering each question. You will not be expected to memorize the questions. However, you will be expected to have your answers memorized in Spanish. I will grade the presentations. Please see the Rubric in the for more specific details. Mi vida loca re-enactments There will be 4 recorded re-enactments during Weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8. You will first watch a 5-7 minutes cultural video taking place in Spain in the first person and fill-in the missing lines from the scene. After watching the Mi vida loca video, you will record yourself re-enacting the scene with a partner (either a non-spanish or a Spanish speaking partner). Your partner must speak in Spanish during the scene. Your partner may read from a script, but you must memorize your lines. I am looking to see that you are looking at your partner during the scene and not at the computer screen or at your partner's script. I will grade the presentations.

Weeks 3, 5 and 7 Presentations Pronunciation of words and phrase in Spanish presentations There will be 3 presentations during Weeks 3, 5, and 7. The presentation will include a list of Spanish words and an audio or a video file or you reading those words aloud. You will first need to review all of the written comments and oral feedback that I give to you in your previous presentations in the Grades tab. For example, in Week 3, I will ask you to go into the Grade book and look at the comments and listen to the audio files that I leave for you in the Week 2 Question and Answer Presentation and in the Week 2 Mi vida loca re-enactment. After practicing how to correctly pronounce the list of words, you will record yourself and audio or video file. I will grade the presentations. Please see the Rubric in the for more specific details. Presentations about yourself, others and your classes There will be 3 recorded presentations during Weeks 3, 5 and 7. You will first watch an example of a student describing himself/herself and others in Spanish using the vocabulary and grammar from the previous 2 lessons. After watching the video, you will write your presentation on a 3x5 card or ½ sheet of paper and practice your presentation until it is memorized. Then, the you will record yourself. I will grade the presentations. Please see the Rubric in the for more specific details. FINAL WEEK 9 Pronunciation Exam There will be 1 pronunciation exam during Weeks 9. The pronunciation xxam will cover the new vowel and consonants sounds, stress and accents marks and general punctuation rules. You will answer some true/false, multiple choice and fill-in the blank type questions and the student will also explain to me what letters make different sounds and you will record and upload to audio files of you reading some words and phrases in Spanish. The computer will initially grade the majority of the pronunciation exam s answers. Then, I will grade the audio submissions. You will be given 1 opportunity and 180 minutes (3 hours) to work on the pronunciation exam. The exam should not take you more than 1 hour to finish. However, because there are audio files involved, there will be more time to you just in case there are some technological challenges. 3 Comprehensive Exams There will be 3 comprehensive exams over all of the vocabulary and grammar taught in Lessons 1 and 2, Lessons 3 and 4 and Lessons 5, 6 and 7. You will answer some true/false and multiplechoice type questions. The computer will grade the exam. You will be given 1 opportunity and 60 minutes (1 hour) to work on each of the exams.

6 Presentation There will be 1 presentation during Week 9. Each presentation will be from 2-4 minutes in length. The presentation should be mostly memorized and the other classmates should be able to understand what you saying in Spanish (they should be familiar with the vocabulary, grammatical structures that the presenter has prepared, etc.) Presentation Topics: Lessons 5-7. Family, pastimes, and seasons and weather vocabulary, present tense of ser, tener and estar, future (I am going to), and present progressive (I am writing right now). I will grade the presentations. Please see the Rubric in the for more specific details. GRADING: Each and assessment will be given a specific point value. WEIGHT OF ASSIGNMENTS/ASSESSMENTS: Components value per module # per week or per course value WEEK 1 Beginning activities (5 pts. each) 2 per course 10 pts. total Pronunciation Mini-zes (5 pts. each) 8 per course 40 pts. total WEEKS 2-8 Lesson Assignments and zes (5-50 pts. each) 5 per week 705 pts. total WEEK 9 1 Pronunciation (50 pts. each) 1 per course 50 pts. total 3 Exams (Over lessons 1-7) (55-75 pts. each) 3 per course 200 pts. total 1 Presentation (100 pts. each) 1 per course 50 pts. total Total points for all course work = 1055 points Note: Divide the total amount of points that you earn by 1055 to calculate your %. Late Work: For each day that an or assessment is submitted late, there will be a 1% deduction. For example, if a student submits a 5 points, 10 days after the s due date, there will be an automatically 10% deduction. 10% of 5 points equals a.5 points deduction. For example, if a student submits a 50 points quiz, 10 days after the quiz s due date, there will be an automatically 10% deduction. 10% of 50 points equals a 5 points deduction. Keep in mind that even though you are allowed to take the quizzes as many times as you would like to, the deduction will be taken from the highest quiz score (even if the highest score was submitted before the quiz s due date). Extra Credit: There is 1 opportunity for extra credit points. 1) If you complete the CoursEval, you can earn an additional 5 points on your Presentation II.

You will basically be learning the equivalent of 1 year of high school (1st year) Spanish in 9 weeks! However, when you have finished you will be able to hold a basic conversation with friends, family and new acquaintances. This course requires a lot of memorization. If you apply yourself to memorizing the vocabulary and practice writing and pronouncing the new sounds, you will begin to see some improvements. The best advice that I can give you is to do your best at memorizing the vocabulary, looking for pattern in sentences, and copying those patterns. You may notice at the beginning of the course that some students know more Spanish than other students or even you, perhaps. Please try not to compare yourself with other students, but rather, look at each lesson's learning objectives in each Module and try to achieve those goals. Throughout the course I will ask every student to use the same vocabulary and grammar from the lessons. I do this so that I can challenge both types of learners. For those of you that are advanced Spanish learners, I want you to try to say what you want to say with the limited vocabulary so that the newer students will understand. For those of you that are beginning Spanish learners, I want you to use the vocabulary that has been given to you and use it with confidence so that you are not tempted to use a translator. I have designed the course with a lot of s that are worth 5-50 points, rather than a few large s worth 100 points. I designed it this way so that you will work with the new vocabulary and grammar every day. I have also designed the course so that the s collectively are worth as many points as the exams. That way, if you do not earn a high score on the exams, but you do well on the s, you can still receive a good grade. Students will sometimes ask me how long will it take for them to become fluent in Spanish. I equate language learning to learning how to play an instrument. It depends upon 3 things...

8 Your natural ability to learn a second language Your prior experience in learning a second language (taking a Spanish class before this one) The amount of study time that you dedicate yourself to learning Spanish Students will sometimes tell me that what the textbook is teaching them is not correct. Well, the OER textbook and I will be teaching you the proper way to speak Spanish (without using any slang). The textbook uses the Spanish vocabulary that you would most likely encounter in Mexico. This means that other Spanish speaking people from other countries will most likely notice that you say things differently. That is okay. It just means that you will learn MANY ways to speak Spanish; the proper Spanish used in college and the everyday Spanish used with some different vocabulary words. Remember that I am here to support you, but you are responsible for the hard work, good attitude and keeping in touch with me. Please do not give up. You can do this! And in fact, when you do finish, you will be proud of yourself
