3 This information pack is full of useful information for yourself and your parent/guardians. It will tell you everything you need to know about taking the next step and undertaking your National Citizen Service. If after reading this you are still unclear about any parts of the programme please do contact us. The numbers of the Resonate Hants coordinators are on the back of your information pack. We hope you are as excited as we are about this Autumn s NCS programme! I didn t know surfing was my favourite sport until I gave it a go. YOUR NCS PROMGRAMME NCS is made up of four main sections: Adventure, Discovery, Social Action & Extension. In completing all four challenges you will: Try new things Meet new people Gain Independence Build friendships Make a difference

4 ADVENTURE The first four days / three nights of your autumn half term NCS involves travelling to the Ultimate Adventure Centre, in North Devon for three days of fun, challenging, and rewarding activities. You will get the opportunity to try some of the following activities on your programme: FREE Sleeping Bag 1 x Hoodie 2 x T-shirts * SURFING * COASTEERING * CLIMBING HIGH ROPES * PADDLE BOARDING * RAFT BUILDING * MOUNTAIN BOARDING * ARCHERY * MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDING * ULTIMATE ASSAULT COURSE We will arrange a central pick up point to depart from on your first morning your programme leaders will arrange the time and place to meet. You ll face individual challenges but have the support of team mates to help you overcome any fears you may have. No team will make it through this challenging and exciting experience without mastering the art of communication and encouraging one another. You will get three meals a day catered for at the Ultimate Adventure Centre and be staying in warm lodges at the centre. Evening activities are included so every programme has an action packed and fun time planned for their away trip.

5 SKILLS WORKSHOPS - DISCOVERY The next three days of the half term autumn NCS programme, take place back in Farnborough College of Technology (TBC). During these days you will undertake a number of different workshops in order to learn new skills that may help you with your social action project. The idea is that you get challenged in a totally different way in the workshops learning new skills as opposed to being challenged physically as a team, as you were at The Ultimate Adventure Centre. As an example we might arrange a Bar Flair course for students in this period. Not only will they learn about the responsible service of alcohol but they will also get the opportunity to learn some cocktail making and showman bar tendering skills. Whatever the workshops, they will be challenging and completely different from what you would normally learn in college. Hopefully they will help you design a social action and may even lead to future part time employment!

6 SOCIAL ACTION Following the completion of your workshops you and your course mates, along with your programme leaders, will design and deliver a social action project. This is an activity that may raise money for a local charity and involves you giving your time to the cause. An example from last year was a sponsored Dry Triathlon, the money raised through sponsorship being donated to the Amazing Alice Charity. It is really important that your social action impacts on a group / charity or organisation that you as a group want to support often the best ones are local groups who are small in size but big in local impact.

7 EXTENSION BECOMING A GRADUATE - Each student who successfully completes their NCS will receive a certificate from the Prime Minister, Theresa May, acknowledging that they are a graduate of the scheme. Opportunities will also be available to graduates in the future which may include paid employment. Large employers recognise NCS as a plus for future job applications and if you plan to attend university NCS has a tick box that you can complete as a graduate on the UCAS application form. AMBASSADOR SCHEME The NCS journey doesn t stop there. As an Ambassador you will take your NCS experience to the next level. You will get access to The Opportunity Hub - a gateway for graduates to access a range of different opportunities. Ongoing NCS involvement can enhance skills, help you get work and potentially lead to international travel. Best of all it helps you to keep making a difference to your local community.

8 GETTING PACKED We will provide all specialist equipment such as wetsuits, surfboards, helmets and lifejackets. You only need to bring personal belongings (if you have your own full length wet suit feel free to bring it). You will be provided with 1 NCS hoodie and 2 NCS t-shirts and we will expect you to wear your NCS tops whenever you are outside of your accommodation. Please take this into consideration when packing. Also consider the weather closer to the time of your trip. The weather is changeable so make sure you pack enough warm clothes so you don t get cold. We are also going to give you a free sleeping bag to keep for future camping expeditions. CLOTHING Thick and thin socks 1 pair of dry trainers 1 pair of wet trainers Waterproof Jacket Flip Flops Trousers Shorts T-shirts Jumpers Hoodies Pyjamas Underwear Swimwear LUGGAGE 1 Large Bag (For traveling) 1 Smaller bag (For day trips) Remember this is not a fashion show. Don t bring your expensive designer clothing. Bring warm and practical clothing.

9 MOBILES & ELECTRIC DEVICES You are allowed to bring your mobile phone and you will be able to use it when activities are NOT taking place. Please note that you will be spending a large amount of time on the beach and/or around water. Your phone will become solely your responsibility. Also consider the fact that you will be in the countryside and mobile reception will be very poor. You may want to bring an external battery pack. Again, that will become your responsibility. We do NOT advise that you bring any other electrical equipment. Cameras are optional and again your responsibility. OTHER ESSENTIALS SUNCREAM!!! 10 OUR COMMITMENTS We take the safety of our participants very seriously. We work with highly experienced partners, employ fully trained staff and comply with all relevant legislation. We also require all young people and staff to follow a simple code of conduct. Highly Experienced Partners We only work with groups, companies, and individuals that have been recognised by Hampshire County Council as being fully qualified to work with Hampshire Schools and Colleges. We work only with partners and organisations that can make NCS the most rewarding and valuable experience for our participants. Fully Trained Staff During all activities young people are accompanied. Staffing ratios exceed recommended levels at all times, including those specified in the Governments Education outside the Classroom guidelines. All staff are fully trained in all activities that they deliver. Compliance with all Relevant Legislation We comply fully with all relevant legislation and, where appropriate, all of our outdoor activity partners are licensed under the Adventure Activities Licensing Regulations We produce detailed risk assessments for all activities. All staff are trained to identify and mitigate any risks that arise during the programme. Participant Responsibilities Young people are responsible for following our simple code of conduct during their NCS programme. If a young person seriously or persistently breaks this code of conduct then we will have to ask them to leave. In this eventuality the young person in question will be asked to return home at his or her own cost. Code of Conduct for Young People Follow safety rules and the law Only leave the site with a leader. Staff must know where you are at all times Sleeping arrangements are single sex only No alcohol or illegal drugs Respect and include other people Challenge yourself (in other words, take part!)
