2 2016 Conference SPEAKERs Terence J. Houlihan Terence J. Houlihan has been an educator and counselor for over 20 years. Terence began his career as high school teacher in New York City. After two years, he landed a position in Westchester County high school and was promoted to teacher supervisor. He shifted gears and later became a school counselor. With the variety of perspectives Terence had in school systems and the expanding field of research in brain development, he decided to expand his message of student advocacy beyond the school. He has appeared in training videos, radio programs, and delivers workshops for high school and middle school counselors, teachers and administrators across the United States and internationally on the developmental changes associated with adolescence. Terence also speaks to parent groups about raising teenagers. In addition to being a high school counselor, he is an adjunct lecturer at the graduate program in counselor education at the City University of New York, Lehman College. Terence has written articles and book chapters for the American School Counselor Association, the National Association of School Superintendents and the National Association of College Admissions Counseling. Dr. Donna Riter Dr. Donna Riter, an Independent Behavioral Consultant/ Educational Trainer, has been in the field of education for more than 40 years working with students from PK to Grade 12 in regular and special education. Her experience in education as a teacher and administrator include speech/ language therapist, classroom instructor, instructional assistant, vice principal for the Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES, Director of the Halpern Education Center Day Treatment program for the emotionally disabled, and as an adjunct professor at Nazareth and St. John Fisher Colleges in Rochester NY. She has extensive training in a variety of areas and has developed and implemented numerous seminars for both special and regular education staff. Her work includes but is not limited to topics on: Understanding and Avoiding the Conflict Cycle, Keeping Everyone Safe: Strategies for the De-escalation of Challenging Students in Crisis, Behavioral Management Strategies in the Classroom, Safe Bus Transportation of Challenging Students, Learning How to Get the Story Straight During Crisis, Understanding Bullies, Victims and Bystanders, Supervision and Leadership: The Process of Change For Administrators, The Mask of the Passive-Aggressive Child, From Attention Seeking to Aggression: Motivators for Misbehavior-How to Recognize, Avoid and Remedy, Working with Oppositional Defiant Behavior Patterns, Skills and Strategies for Looking Beyond the Behavior and Dual Diagnosis of Autism Dr. Riter has a Master s degree in Education with a concentration in special education and speech and hearing disabled. She also has a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration, an SAS and SDA certification. She completed her doctoral program in Executive Leadership at St. John Fisher College in Rochester NY. Dr. Riter currently works as a Senior Life Space Crisis Intervention Trainer for Dr. Nicholas Long, director of the Institute of Psycho-educational Training, formerly of American University.
