Davis Michael J. Davis is the Chief United States District Judge for the. He was nominated to the federal bench by President Bill Clinton in 1993, and has served as Chief Judge since Chief Judge Davis previously served as a Hennepin County District and Municipal Judge, a Hennepin County Public Defender, a Commissioner on the Minneapolis Civil Rights Commission, and an attorney with the Legal Rights Center. Chief Judge Davis received his undergraduate degree from Macalester College and his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School. Dale Carpenter Dale Carpenter is the Earl R. Larson Professor of Civil Rights & Civil Liberties Law at the University of Minnesota Law School, where he teaches and writes in the areas of constitutional law, the First Amendment, and sexual orientation and the law. He received his undergraduate degree from Yale College and his law degree from the University of Chicago Law School, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the University of Chicago Law Review. Professor Carpenter is the author of Flagrant Conduct: The Story of Lawrence v. Texas: How a Bedroom Arrest Decriminalized Gay Americans. Flagrant Conduct was named a Notable Book by the New York Times Book Review in William J. Baxley Bill Baxley is a partner in the Birmingham law firm Baxley, Dillard, McKnight & James. He was elected Attorney General of the State of Alabama in 1971 at the age of 28, a position he held until While Attorney General, Mr. Baxley successfully prosecuted Ku Klux Klansman Robert Chambliss for the 1963 bombing of Birmingham s Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Mr. Baxley later served as Alabama s Lieutenant Governor from 1983 to 1987 and is a retired Colonel in the Alabama Army National Guard.

5 G. Douglas Jones Doug Jones is a partner in the Birmingham law firm Haskell Slaughter. Mr. Jones served as United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama from 1997 to As the U.S. Attorney, Mr. Jones re-opened the case of the 1963 bombing of Birmingham s Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, and served as lead trial attorney in a successful case against two additional Ku Klux Klansman. Mr. Jones also led the task force that successfully apprehended and prosecuted Eric Rudolph, a mostwanted fugitive who pleaded guilty to four terrorist bombings and is serving four consecutive life sentences. Mark J. Kappelhoff Mark Kappelhoff joined the University of Minnesota Law School as a Professor of Clinical Law in 2012, after serving for fourteen years as a federal prosecutor. Most recently, Professor Kappelhoff served as Chief of the Criminal Section, Civil Rights Division, of the U.S. Department of Justice, where he was responsible for supervising and prosecuting high-profile criminal civil rights cases across the country, including hate crimes, human trafficking, and law-enforcement misconduct cases. Professor Kappelhoff helped write and secure passage in 2009 of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Professor Kappelhoff is a Minnesota native and received his undergraduate degree from St. John s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. He obtained his law degree from American University s Washington College of Law. Honorable Joan N. Ericksen Joan N. Ericksen is a United States District Judge for the. She was sworn in on June 14, 2002, after having served as a judge in Minnesota s state courts, first as a trial and juvenile court judge, and then as an Associate Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. Judge Ericksen was a shareholder in a Minneapolis law firm before beginning her judicial service, and also, for ten years, was an Assistant United States Attorney. She received her law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School (where, she notes, tuition at the time was $300 per quarter). Judge Ericksen has been a member of the Minnesota Chapter of the Federal Bar Association since She is the Chapter s incoming President. Honorable Susan Richard Nelson Susan Richard Nelson is a United States District Judge for the. She was nominated to the federal bench by President Barack Obama in Judge Nelson previously served as a United States Magistrate Judge from 2000 to Before taking the bench, Judge Nelson was a partner in the Minneapolis law firm Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P. Judge Nelson received her undergraduate degree from Oberlin College and her law degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Honorable Kermit E. Bye Kermit E. Bye is a United States Circuit Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. He was nominated to the federal bench by President Bill Clinton in Before taking the bench, Judge Bye practiced law with the Vogel law firm in Fargo, North Dakota. Judge Bye received both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Dakota.

6 Honorable Jeffrey J. Keyes Jeffrey J. Keyes is a United States Magistrate Judge for the. He was appointed to the federal bench in Judge Keyes previously was a partner in the Twin Cities law firm Briggs & Morgan, P.A. Judge Keyes received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School. Honorable Paul H. Anderson Paul H. Anderson is an Associate Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. Justice Anderson was appointed to the court by Governor Arne Carlson in He previously served as Chief Judge of the Minnesota Court of Appeals. Before taking the bench, Justice Anderson was a partner in the South St. Paul law firm LeVander, Gillen & Miller. Justice Anderson received his undergraduate degree from Macalester College and his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School. Neil W. Hamilton Neil W. Hamilton serves as Professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, where he has been on the faculty since the school s founding in Professor Hamilton previously taught on the faculty of the William Mitchell College of Law. In 2006 Professor Hamilton became a founding director of the Thomas Holloran Center for Ethical Leadership in the Professions, the nation s leading empirical research center on professionalism.
