1 Number 3/2010 WCA website *SPECIAL CONFERENCE EDITION* WCA 2011 CONFERENCE UNIVERSIDAD DE LIMA LIMA, PERU AUGUST 1-5, 2011 WCA s 2011 Biennial Conference will take place on the campus of the Universidad of Lima, August 1-5, The focus of the conference will continue to be on promoting scholarship, fostering intercultural dialogue, and providing opportunities for cultural awareness. The conference will feature academic paper presentations, panel discussions, keynote lectures by prominent Latin American scholars and practitioners, specific programs for graduate students, and 1-day cultural event. Participants will also be able to take part in a 5-day post-conference tour. The 2011 conference will also feature presentations of the Family of Myung Seok Park Financial Awards for Outstanding Scholarship and Oral Presentation. The theme of the 2011 Conference is Communication That Makes a World of Difference: Looking Back, Thinking Forward. WCA is dedicated to the improvement of communication worldwide by linking people who hold common professional and personal interests. The premise of WCA is that mutual understanding must exist before individuals, groups, organizations, and communities can maximize intergroup collaboration, harmony, and peace. Consequently, our 2011 conference will feature presentations, panel discussions, and less-structured interactions that focus on how communication research, theory, and practice can positively impact a broad array of contexts. In looking back, we hope that submissions will celebrate seminal research and creative activities in the field of communication and seek to evaluate how this body of work has impacted the world in which we live. Papers and panels that respond to this aspect of the theme might ask: What research/theory has had the most practical value?; How have seminal works generated bodies of literature that have transformed current thinking?; and/or What communicationbased programs reflect best practices? In thinking forward, we encourage conference participants to look to the future of our world and the potential of intercultural communication scholars in addressing contemporary and emerging issues. Papers and panels that respond to this aspect of the theme might ask: What topics of study are emerging in the field of communication?; How are existing areas of communication research, teaching, and practice changing and developing?; and/or Which particular research paradigms, theories, and methods are best suited to meet the challenges of a changing global reality? Papers/panels/workshops responding to such issues may include theoretical and
2 practical explorations of these issues as they are represented in communication, education, organizations, community and media studies. Family of Myung Seok Park Financial Awards for Outstanding Scholarship Awards With the generosity of one of its founding members, Professor Myung Seok Park, the World Communication Association presents financial awards and honors for quality research papers in the field of intercultural communication. Attendees of the conference may submit full papers for the opportunity to be eligible for one of the five awards of US $1000. In 2011, the following categories will be awarded: Best Conference Papers in *Qualitative Research, *Quantitative Research, and *Theoretical-Praxis Understanding. In addition, *Best Student Paper, *Best Overall Paper, and *Several Oral Presentation Awards (see next section) also will be selected. All papers will be judged via a blind review by a panel of international experts on the basis of (1) saliency of topic, (2) conceptual foundation, (3) methodological rigor, (4) analytic insight, (5) and overall scholarly contribution. Papers earning the highest rankings through this process and/or nominated by reviewers will be evaluated by the WCA Secretary-General who will present recommendations to the WCA President. Only completed papers are eligible for these awards. Protocol For Paper Submissions: Length: pages excluding references, tables, figures, 12pt., double spaced, 1 margins all around Language: English Style: Latest version of Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA). Cover Page: Separate from manuscript, including title, author(s), mail and addresses, telephone and fax numbers, as well as a 50-word abstract and list of key words. Candidates for these awards will be reviewed by two international evaluators on the basis of established criterion related to presentation effectiveness (e.g., organizational structure, content, delivery, effective use of time). Awards will be presented during the Conference Closing on Friday, August 5 th.
3 SPECIAL CONFERENCE PROGRAMS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS WCA conferences have always served the needs of established and emerging intercultural communication scholars, in terms of programs, presentations, and cultural activities. However, building off of some efforts begun in Brisbane (2007) and further developed in Dublin (2009), we are pleased to announce two specific programmatic features designed specifically for graduate students. Graduate faculty, graduate advisors, and graduate directors please encourage your students to submit their work and attend! First, we encourage all graduate students to submit completed manuscripts for consideration of a Family of Myung Seok Park Financial Award for Outstanding Scholarship. All submissions solely or jointly authored by current graduate students (M.A. and/or Ph.D.) automatically will be considered for this award; those submitting their work are asked to mark their manuscript with the following notation: Graduate Student Submission. Please send these submissions electronically to orbe@wmich.edu Second, graduate students can also submit extended abstracts (3-5 pages) or works-in-progress (10-15 pages) to be included in the conference s Graduate Student Research Think Tank. This special conference session will feature a panel of graduate students providing brief presentations on specific research ideas. Students selected for this program will benefit greatly from the constructive review by selected WCA members, as well as the collective feedback of the larger WCA community of scholars. Ultimately, this program is designed to support, encourage, and nurture the future of intercultural communication scholarship. Student submissions should follow the process as outlined in other sections of this newsletter AND be designated as part of the Graduate Student Research Think Tank. Please send your submissions for the Think Tank electronically to Dr. Sakile K. Camara at sakile.camara@csun.edu The deadline for all submissions to the 2011 Lima Conference is February 1, Please send all materials electronically to orbe@wmich.edu. Notification regarding paper acceptance will occur no later than 4 weeks of submission receipt.
