2 02 MONASH ARTS PRODUCING RESEARCH THAT MATTERS Research in the humanities and social sciences makes a significant contribution to knowledge across a broad range of sectors and contributes to positive change in society in many facets of our lives. The Faculty of Arts provides excellent research that is focused and engaged and seeks to answer the questions: What forces shape our lives? Caulfield Campus What makes for a rich and meaningful existence? How can we change things for the better? Our work aids intercultural literacy, creates new understandings and informs government policy. Monash Arts research also contributes to international scholarly debate on issues as diverse as climate change, the ethics of robotics and anti-radicalisation. Our graduate research degrees We offer a suite of graduate research degrees at the Masters (MA) and Doctoral (PhD) levels. The Master of Arts (MA) is 2 years full time or 4 years part time and the PhD must be completed within 3-4 years equivalent full time (EFT). Traditional and practice based degrees are available at both Masters and Doctoral level and involve the independent investigation of a research problem or topic that will make a significant contribution to the field of study. Students in both types of degrees are supported by a minimum of two supervisors for the duration of their degree. Degree program areas We are one of the largest Arts faculties in Australia, and have the capacity to supervise the broadest range of topics in the humanities, social sciences, music and theatre. 4 04 MONASH ARTS Clayton Campus Film, media and communications Our program is run by some of Australia s leading researchers in film, television, communication, media studies, journalism and journalism studies. Potential research topics include the effects of digital media on globalisation, indigenous film, and new forms of journalism. We also offer a practice-based PhD in journalism. Historical studies Our Historical studies program has an outstanding reputation, in Australia and internationally. Candidates work with experts in a broad range of historical subjects and fields, including archaeology, public history, Indigenous histories and religious studies. Linguistics & applied linguistics Designed by internationally recognized linguists this program covers dozens of specialties across a wide range of languages. The program is also home to the Language and Society Centre, an active research centre within the Faculty of Arts. Literary and cultural studies We offer specialisations in literary studies, creative writing and translation and interpreting studies and we have the only practice-based PhD in translation studies in Australia. Philosophy The Monash philosophy program is internationally recognised for its strengths in contemporary analytic philosophy, bioethics, European philosophy, and aesthetics. Social and political sciences This program encompasses a range of disciplines including anthropology, criminology, politics, international relations and sociology (including gender studies) and includes some of the world s leading researchers. Theatre, performance and music Our program is home to internationally renowned researchers in theatre and performance studies and musicology. Our students undertake both theoretical and practice-based degrees in music performance, music composition and theatre performance. In all our programs students can focus on developing knowledge and expertise in their chosen discipline, as well as developing professional skills that will support their career ambitions. 5 TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE AN IMPACT 05 PRACTICE- BASED RESEARCH JOINT PhD AWARDS We offer unique practice based research degrees in journalism, creative writing, translation studies, theatre performance, music composition and music performance. These degrees offer the opportunity to complete an original practical or creative component together with a rigorous research and thesis component. There are opportunities to pursue research at universities overseas where you will work with international supervisors. You ll graduate with a joint PhD from Monash and the partner university. 6 06 MONASH ARTS A SUPPORTIVE RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT To ensure you stay on track and achieve your goals we provide you with quality supervision, a range of support programs and a clear structured approach to monitoring your progress. Supervision excellence Our researchers have distinguished themselves on national and international levels as leading commentators, theorists and critics in a wide range of research areas. You ll benefit from their wealth of experience, knowledge and global networks. Monitoring your progress Both masters and doctoral students produce a progress report within the first twelve months confirming their candidature. Masters students present a second report at eighteen months (EFT). Doctoral students have a second review at twenty-four months and a final review at thirty-six months (EFT). These milestone progress reviews provide students with an opportunity in a supportive environment, to receive expert advice on how to improve and complete their project. Skills development We offer short training courses in developing research and writing skills as well as thesis preparation and journal writing. These courses have helped our candidates to publish their work and promote their research profiles and skills. Career development and research training opportunities There are significant career development and research training opportunities available to our research students including opportunities to participate in staff-led research projects competing for external funding from bodies such as the Australian Research Council. We help students prepare for a broad range of careers by focusing on the acquisition of skills and knowledge for collaborating with other researchers, managing projects and tasks, developing professional networks and instigating social change. 7 TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE AN IMPACT 07 Financial support We provide substantial financial support to our graduate researchers. For example the Travel Grant Scheme, provides funding to offset travel expenses for students who need to travel as part of their studies. The faculty also provides support for the cost of activities related to research such as conferences and fieldwork. Scholarships The recruitment of talented and high quality students within Australia and worldwide is one of the key strategies of the Faculty of Arts. We are committed to investing in graduate research scholarships regularly. We believe that it is our investment in ideas and people that will change the world. Our tuition scholarships for international students cover the cost of tuition fees and include the cost of compulsory single overseas student health cover. We also offer stipend scholarships for both domestic and international students and they provide a living allowance which is paid on a fortnightly basis.
