37 (c) GUELPH-WATERLOO CENTRE for GRADUATE WORK IN CHEMISTRY A PROPOSAL FOR A GRADUATE POLYMER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING OPTION May 1, 1985 This proposal is being introduced to complement the formation of the Institute for Polymer Research.* Precisely parallel proposals are being brought forward at the University of Waterloo by (GWC)2 and by the Department of Chemical Engineering, and it is envisioned that the two Option programs will in time come together as a single joint Program. If the Institute for Polymer Research 1S to succeed, it must have a steady supply of graduate students. In Canada, the concentration of expertise represented by the polymer group at Waterloo is unique, but as there exist no formal Polymer programs anywhere in Canada, students interested in studying in this area may tend to leave Canada for schools in the U.S. (e.g., U. Akron, U. Mass, Case Western Reserve) which do have formal Polymer Programs or Departments. Recent years have seen students from Waterloo going to these schools for further study after completion of their B.A.Sc. or M.A.Sc. The purpose of the present proposal is to offer a strong Canadian alternative to such students. This proposal suggests that we formally identify and advertise a "Polymer Science and Engineering Option" within the graduate program of (GWC)2, which has the following features: Graduate students will be admitted to the Option subject to their acceptance as graduate students in (GWC)2. Individuals entering at the Ph.D. level will also be expected to have or to attain requirements equivalent to those at the Master's level in the Polymer Science and Engineering Option. Their course of study (courses, exams, etc.) will satisfy the degree requirements of the Guelph-Waterloo Centre for Graduate Work in Chemistry. They will participate in the TA program of their department. A range of Polymer courses will be offered which is substantially broader than that available at present, so as to provide education in the polymer area in a more thorough and less ad hoc manner. The program envisaged will be the first one in Canada and will capitalize on the extraordinary concentration of talent in the polymer field which is available at Waterloo. One can also envisage the possibility of eventually developing one year "diploma" or course-based M.Sc. offerings. * The Institute for Polymer Research was approved by the University of Waterloo Senate on October 15, 1984.
