I have made it a practice to attend conferences, lectures, and workshops for the purpose of interacting with colleagues who might contribute information and
4 PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES TEACHING continued ideas that would support my commitment to the scholarship of teaching (Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate, Ernest L. Boyer, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, 1990). The following are examples of these activities: August 13-16, 2005 I attended the 100 th Annual Conference of the American Sociological Association in Philadelphia, PA. I attended this conference to participate in sessions that directly related to my teaching and research, and to meet with colleagues to discuss my current research agenda. June 14-16, 2003 From June 14-16, I attended the University of Kentucky s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging 21 st Annual Summer Series on Aging. I attended this conference to become more familiar with current research, issues, programs, policies, and initiatives related to aging in American society. Fall 2002 to Spring 2003 Attended a presentation sponsored by the EKU Center for Appalachian Studies entitled Writing Appalachia: Representations of Class and Inequality in Kentucky Speaker: Dr. Dwight Billings, Distinguished Appalachian Scholar Attended several sessions offered by the EKU Teaching and Learning Center including, Student Retention & Literacy Development: University, Department, Classroom, & Student Perspectives Speakers: Dr. Aaron Thompson, Dr. Jim Kenkel, Dr. Jessica Bryant, and Diane Banasiak Teaching Insight: Facilitating Change Speaker: Doug Robertson Teachers Who Motivate Students to Learn From the Students Perspective Speaker: Christy Ooten April 1999 Attended the 20 th annual Women Writers Conference. The conference included readings by women writers, panel discussions, workshops, and performances. Featured speakers included: 1) Susan Bordo, who is a Professor of Philosophy and held the Singletary Chair in the Humanities at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Bordo discussed her work dealing with "contemporary culture and the body"; 2) Marita Golden, who is author of several novels and is founder of the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Award for emerging African-American college fiction writers. Golden discussed her book entitled "Saving our Sons: Raising Black Children in a Turbulent World"; 3) bell hooks (her spelling), who is a Kentucky native and is well-known as an intellectual and scholar and for her "deconstructive" analyses of race and gender. At this time hooks was the Distinguished Professor of English at City College of New York and author of fifteen books; and 4) Gwendolyn Parker, who is a lawyer and former attorney for a Wall Street firm and was also a top executive for American Express before deciding to concentrate her energies on her writing. She discussed her latest book entitled "Trespassing: My Sojourn in the Halls of Privilege". In her book she uses her experiences to discuss why privilege and overachievement are not enough to overcome racism or sexism. Spring and Fall 1998 During the Spring and Fall semesters of 1998, I attended several programs presented at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU). These included women's studies workshops and Friday meetings
5 PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES TEACHING continued designed to serve as an opportunity for professors from various disciplines to come together to discuss issues related to the future development of women's studies at EKU. Spring 1997 Attended the Women's History Conference in Frankfort, Kentucky in March of 1997: The theme of the conference was "Kentucky Women: A Fine and Long Tradition of Community Leadership". The conference included a variety of sessions highlighting women's activism on agricultural, political, and economic issues. Fall 1996 Attended the American Sociological Association (ASA) Annual Conference in New York City in August of 1996: I attended a variety of sessions, all of which were directly related to my teaching and/or research interest. Topics included: 1) "Contemporary Issues and Challenges to Affirmative Action in Higher Education"; 2) "The Constitution and Race Consciousness"; 3) "Social Science as a Science Priority: Opportunities and Constraints"; 4) Determinants of Gender-Atypical Occupational Choices Among Men and Women"; 5) "Education and the Gender Gap in Earnings at Career Entry"; 6) "Changes in Industrial Organization and the Global Economy"; and 7) "Social Policy and Social Research: Primary Emphasis on the Current Policy Debate on Welfare Reform". These sessions as well as other activities such as the ASA exhibit of teaching and research resources, the publishers' exhibit, and social events provided opportunities for interacting with colleagues in the field. Eastern Kentucky University Workshops: In October of 1996 I attended two programs offered by the Women's Studies Program: 1) "Narratives of Women Slaves" presented by Dr. Isabelle White and Dr. Paula Kopacz, EKU English Department; and 2) "Women of Mexico" presented by Dr. Francis Chasson-Lopez, University of Kentucky.
