2 How does CELTA relate to TESOL? Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a generic term used to describe English language teaching qualifications. CELTA is a specific TESOL qualification awarded by Cambridge English Language Assessment.

3 What is CELTA? CELTA is an initial (pre-service) qualification for people with little or no teaching experience. Because it is awarded by Cambridge English, part of the world-famous University of Cambridge, you can rely on its quality and recognition. Over 12,00 people successfully complete a CELTA course each year.

4 To be eligible to apply to do CELTA at Curtin you need to. be aged 18 or over have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education demonstrate that you have a level of English to enable you to teach at a range of levels. For non-native speakers:- CEFR C2 or high grade at C1 = IELTS 8 or above = CAE Grade A or B

5 Where can I use CELTA? Australia - The minimum qualification to work in language centres teaching English to overseas students (ELICOS) is an undergraduate degree and a TESOL certificate with a practical component. CELTA is the certificate favoured by these language centres. Internationally CELTA is the most widely recognised TESOL qualification ( see for example

6 Curtin course program The course program is designed by Curtin English, using the syllabus and course objectives set down by Cambridge English. The program includes: Input Supervised lesson planning Teaching practice (6 assessed hours) Feedback on teaching Peer observation Observation of experienced teachers (min. 6 hours) Consultation time

7 CELTA at Curtin: Curtin University has been offering two full-time courses per year for more than 10 years These are offered in the semester breaks, June/July and November/December 4 weeks: Monday Friday 9:00 5:15

8 On the CELTA course you will: learn the principles of effective teaching. develop a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners. receive hands-on teaching practice.

9 Five main units of learning There are five specific topic areas which are integrated over the duration of the course: 1. Learners and teachers and the teaching and learning context 2. Language analysis and awareness 3. Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing 4. Planning and resources for different teaching contexts 5. Developing teaching skills and professionalism

10 Assessment You will be assessed throughout the course, with no final examination. An external assessor, appointed by Cambridge English, moderates each course. Two components of assessment 1 Teaching Practice. You will teach for a total of six hours, working with classes at 2 levels of ability. Assessment is based on your overall performance at the end of the six hours. 2 Written assignments. You will complete four written assignments; one focusing on adult learners; one on language systems of English; one on language skills; and one on classroom teaching.

11 Two hours each day is teaching practice [TP] You usually teach every other day. When you re not teaching you are observing your peers; learning from their teaching and preparing to give feedback. Your tutor is observing and giving written feedback on your plan and delivery. You teach real learners who attend the free classes we offer during CELTA.

12 Feedback on Teaching Practice 1) Written feedback from your TP tutor. 2) Self-evaluations 3) Oral feedback sessions with your TP tutor and group. In subsequent teaching practice sessions, you develop the strengths and work on the weaknesses that have come to light through the TP feedback process.

13 CELTA grades To be awarded the certificate you must pass both components (teaching practice and written assignments). There are three PASS grades: Pass Pass B Pass A

14 What you need to do outside of course hours In addition to the course hours, you will need approximately 120 additional learning hours for: Pre-course preparation (note CELTA is not a grammar course) Reading and research Assignment writing Lesson planning Record keeping (maintaining your portfolio of work)

15 Other notes Attendance: 100% Be open-minded and prepared to listen and change. English language teaching is NOT lecturing. CELTA has a steep learning curve. Pre-course preparation will be invaluable, so apply early.

16 When to apply Apply as soon as you are sure you want to do the course. Early application will more likely secure your place. There are only 12 candidates per course. Once you have successfully completed the application process, you will be given material for pre-course study. The learning curve on CELTA is very steep. The more precourse preparation you can do, the easier your CELTA journey will be. It s never too early!
