Heritage The Automotive Mechatronics MSc was the first of its kind in the UK, and was built upon a long history of Automotive and Motorsport engineering at Cranfield spanning over 50 years. Lotus s first active suspension system was designed here. We are currently supporting the development of connected and autonomous vehicles. Outstanding facilities 3 Our new Intelligent Mobility Engineering 6 Centre opened in 2017, and the first section of an autonomous highway within the university will soon follow. 4 Automotive Mechatronics Automotive Mechatronics is the branch of automotive engineering that focuses on the integration among mechanical, electrical and computer systems. It is the modern multidisciplinary approach to vehicle design that relies on computer simulation, modelling and control systems engineering. This MSc will give you the new skills that the automotive industry is looking for to develop their current and future products. We deliver graduates with the technical qualities, transferable skills and independent learning ability to make them instantly effective and productive in organisations that design and develop automotive products. Students will be taught by leading academics as well as industrial practitioners, and work alongside a strong research team at Cranfield University. Career prospects Our industry-led education makes Cranfield graduates some of the most desirable in the world for automotive companies. Our students gain extensive expertise in: computer simulation and software engineering, advanced control systems design and calibration, mechatronics and robotics, advanced driver assistance systems and automated driving. Our alumni are employed in innovative automotive companies with roles such as: controls and calibration engineer, simulation and model development specialist, vehicle electronics engineer, research software engineer, performance and test engineer. 4
5 Course information This course will deliver highly-skilled and motivated automotive and mechatronics engineers with the expertise to develop the solutions to today s and tomorrow s challenges, such as further reducing CO 2 emissions and increasing vehicle autonomy and safety as increased artificial intelligence enters the transport sector. Automotive Mechatronics MSc This one year course is responding to increasing industry demand for engineers with the skills to deliver multi-disciplinary integration of physical systems with electronic digital controls, a field responsible for many exciting recent advances in the sector. This course is ideal for students with an engineering, mathematics or applied science undergraduate degree with the capabilities to develop a skill set combining electrical, mechanical, control systems and physical system modelling. The demand for these skills - and the relative scarcity of supply - means that successful students emerging with the ability to apply the principles and practice of automotive mechatronics are in great demand by businesses worldwide and can look forward to swift career progression. MSc by Research An MSc by Research is an intensive research degree that allows candidates to demonstrate their ability to conduct research, whilst benefiting from the support of their supervisors. At the end of the course a thesis is submitted and assessed by appointed examiners. Your research will represent a contribution to knowledge, or the application of existing knowledge to new situations. In consultation with your supervisor and course director you can select a number of taught modules which complement your research topic, creating a personalised master s programme. MSc by Research is available in the following areas: Automotive Control Engineering, Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, Automotive Robotics and Vehicle Mechatronics, Motorsport Mechatronics. 6 Master s: a different way of learning Our specialist, sector-facing master s courses are set up and developed in close collaboration with industry partners, ensuring the content of our courses remain industry-relevant and employers remain impressed with our graduates businessreadiness. There are 10 compulsory core and specialised taught modules, while the research project provides an opportunity to delve deeper into an area of specific interest, with the results summarised in a written document and oral presentation to engineers, academics and students. 6
7 Group projects We plan projects which will prepare students for an industry working environment. Presentations to market the product, demonstrate technical expertise and showcase group communication skills are delivered to automotive engineers and managers, academic staff and fellow students. Two recent projects: Design of an Intelligent Hybrid Powertrain Controller A controller to make optimal decisions how best to combine the vehicle s engine and electric motors. The system is expected to take into account the driver s planned route, data obtained through intelligent sensors, vehicle-to-vehicle communications and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications. Autonomous Electric Vehicle Students designed and simulated a concept autonomous bus able to transport students around the campus. The bus is completely electric and able to navigate autonomously thanks to advanced sensor fusion techniques to blend data from cameras, radars and lidars. 8 Academic staff You will be taught by a wide range of subject specialists at Cranfield University and from outside the University, who draw on their research and industrial experience to provide stimulating and relevant input to your learning experience. Our academics include: Dr James Brighton, Head of Advanced Vehicle Engineering Centre James possesses almost 25 years experience relating to off road vehicle dynamics, terra-mechanics, tyre and track system modelling, advanced vehicle instrumentation and lightweight material structures. Through the off-road dynamics facility his team is able to offer a wide range of vehicle related technical solutions from fundamental research through product design and prototype vehicle sub-system manufacture, supply, evaluation and testing across a wide range of industry sectors. Dr Stefano Longo, Course Director, MSc in Automotive Mechatronics Stefano s research focuses on the area of optimisation-based control algorithm development and their implementation on embedded hardware. His international reputation builds on the publication of over 50 research papers on international journals and conferences. He has an academic background from prestigious universities, including Imperial College London. He currently directs and lectures on automotive mechatronics and supervises MSc and PhD projects. Cranfield University is well recognised in the industry. The Automotive Mechatronics MSc helps me on a daily basis. It provided me with a good grounding on vehicle systems, including hybrid and electric technologies.
