Course Description This course provides an overview of microcomputer applications including Microsoft Windows 8, Microsoft Office 13, Microsoft Word 13, Microsoft Excel 13, Microsoft Access 13, and Microsoft PowerPoint 13. No experience with a computer is assumed, and no mathematics beyond the high school freshman level is required. Course Purpose Students learn the basic skills of Computer Concepts and Microsoft Office 13; instruction includes: The fundamentals of Microsoft Windows 8, Microsoft Word 13, Microsoft PowerPoint 13, Microsoft Excel 13, and Microsoft Access 13 Exposure to practical examples of the computer as a useful tool Acquaintance with the proper procedures to create documents, presentations, worksheets, and databases suitable for coursework, professional purposes, and personal use Discovering the underlying functionality of Office 13 to become more productive Developing an exercise-oriented approach that allows learning by doing Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) 1. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of why computers are essential in business and society. 2. Utilize the fundamentals of and terms associated with computers and mobile devices, the Internet, programs and apps, and digital safety and security Identify the fundamental computer concepts and terminology used for input, processing, output, and storage. 3. Identify the key features of a variety of software such as operating systems, word processors, spreadsheets, databases, communications and graphics. 4. Apply the principles of and solve problems with word processing, spreadsheet, database, communications and file management programs.. Create electronic presentations with presentation graphics. 6. Use the Internet to send electronic messages. 7. Demonstrate the principles of Internet research. 8. Understand the principles of computer security, ethics and privacy. 9. Understand and apply the principles of distance education software. Course Purpose/Objectives In this course, you will build a solid understanding of computers, how to use computers, and how to access information on the web In addition you will learn the most important topics of Microsoft Office 13. 3 Prerequisite This course covers a full semester and no prerequisites are necessary. However, competence in keyboarding with a minimum of 2 words per minute will be beneficial. Check Grade Rubric (available on course website) to understand how points equal a letter grade. All Exams are required and worth 100 points. Three (3) exams will consist of hands-on (practical) project and theory (written) questions- -(0 points for written and 0 points for practical). All examines should be completed by the due date listed on this syllabus and course website. Quizzes are BONUS Points and will help your final grade. Quizzes are unannounced (advertised, surprises)! Therefore, quizzes cannot be rescheduled. You must take them during their availability! Quizzes are only available for a short period of time.
