1 Intermediate Algebra Syllabus MAT1033 Class 2632, Spring 2017 Instructor Information Evelyn Edstrom, M.A. Phone: Office: Altamonte 216K Office Hours Monday 11:00-12:00 & 2:00-3:00 Tuesday 11:00-2:30 Wednesday 11:00-12:00 & 2:00-3:00 Thursday 11:00-1:30 Friday 10:00-12:00 *By Appointment ONLY Course Information Intermediate Algebra - MAT1033 Class 2632 Date: January 9 to May 1, 2017 This is an intermediate course in formal algebra for students without a strong background in algebra. Topics include sets, the real number system and number properties, absolute value, products and factoring, algebraic fractions, linear and quadratic equations and inequalities with applications, systems of equations, radicals, rational exponents, graphs and relations and functions (four elective credits). 1

2 Pre-reqs: Prerequisite: MAT 0022C or MAT 0028C or MAT 0057 or equivalent with a grade of "C" or higher or MAT 0055 with a passing grade or sufficient score on placement test. Additional Class Information: MyMathLab is a required component of this course as homework will be assigned through this online system. An e-book is accessible through MyMathLab. Credits: 4 Grade Scale and Evaluation Methods Letter grades will be assigned as follows: Course Average Grade A B C D Below 60 F NOTE: In order to successfully complete this course, you must earn a grade of C or better. If you do not earn a grade of C or better, you will not be able to advance to the next mathematics course. Also, credit for this course may not transfer to another institution with a grade lower than a C. The course grade will be determined from five tests, quizzes/assignments, homework, and a comprehensive departmental exam as follows: Tests (5) 55% Quizzes/Assignments (In Class) 15% Homework (Daily/Online) 10% 2

3 Comprehensive Departmental Exam (CDE) 20% All grades will be recorded in the Gradebook tab of MyMathLab (MML). It is your responsibility to check for updates and notify the instructor if there are any discrepancies. The CDE consists of 25 questions (17 multiple choice and 8 free response) completed in 90 minutes. Instructional Mode Lecture and Discussion Instruction includes classroom lecture and discussion. Attendance Policy The College recognizes the correlation between attendance and both student retention and achievement. Per College Policy Students are expected to attend all classes, actively participate and complete all assigned course work for all courses for which they are registered. For online classes, attendance is determined by consistently logging in and accessing the course content and completing courses in accordance with the syllabus. Simply logging in to an online class does NOT count as attendance. Students must engage in an academically-related activity. 5

6 Success can often be measured by attendance or lack of attendance. Please contact the instructor: if you need to be absent from class. Students missing 10% (3 classes) will be subject to withdraw by the professor. If you should decide to withdraw from the course, you must complete the proper withdrawal forms. The last date to withdraw without academic penalty is March 21, Attendance records will be kept. Withdrawal Policy A student desiring to withdraw from a course after the add/drop period should initiate withdrawal procedures with an instructor or counselor. Withdrawals are not official until the withdrawal form is completed and given to the Office of Enrollment Services and Registrar. Withdrawal deadlines are published in the official College Catalog Academic Calendar. If you should decide to withdraw from the course, you must complete the proper withdrawal forms. The last date to withdraw without academic penalty is March 21, Classroom Guidelines Expected Protocols If you know you have to leave class early, please inform the instructor and sit near the door. If you arrive late, please enter quietly as not to be disruptive. Background noise disrupts learning for many students, please do not participate in side conversations. Silence all cell phones while in class, refrain from use. Do not interrupt the class by leaving during the lecture unless asked to leave at the instuctor's discretion. MATH means you must attack the homework. Practice is essential to achieve success. Use resources wisely! The most successful mathematics students attend class; keep up with assignments; read the textbook to supplement lectures; find at least one classmate to study with and form a support network; utilize the instructor s office hours and offers of assistance and availability, Academic Success Centers and other school resources. 6

7 Plan your class/study schedule NOW to ensure you have scheduled the time necessary to complete this course successfully. Test Taking Policy If you know AHEAD of time that you will miss a test for a valid reason, arrangements can be made with the instructor to use the Testing Center. You must notify the instructor in writing or , prior to or during the test. No cell phones, laptops or electronic devices are allowed for use during a test and must be turned OFF, placed in a bag or with the instructor. Calculator covers must also be removed and placed in your bag. Any phone on your person may void your test results. All watches need to be taken off and placed at the top of your desk. Any hats must be worn with the brim facing backwards or removed. Only a basic four function calculator (not your phone) is allowed for use during tests. Once the test has been administered, leaving the classroom means you have completed the test. Once you complete the test, please leave the room quietly. If you do not make-up a test within 4 days (M-Sat), the student will receive a zero for the missing test. The final exam grade will replace the lowest test grade, provided it is a higher score, for all students. Academic Integrity As members of the Seminole State College of Florida community, students are expected to be honest in all of their academic coursework and activities. Academic dishonesty, such as cheating of any kind on examinations, course assignments or projects, plagiarism, misrepresentation and the unauthorized possession of examinations or other course-related materials, is prohibited. Plagiarism is unacceptable to the college community. Academic work that is submitted by students is assumed to be the result of their own thought, research or self-expression. When students borrow ideas, wording or organization from another source, they are expected to acknowledge that fact in an appropriate manner. Plagiarism is the deliberate use and appropriation of another's work without identifying the source and trying to pass-off such work 7

8 as the student's own. Any student who fails to give full credit for ideas or materials taken from another has plagiarized. Students who share their work for the purpose of cheating on class assignments or tests are subject to the same penalties as the student who commits the act of cheating. When cheating or plagiarism has occurred, instructors may take academic action that ranges from denial of credit for the assignment or a grade of "F" on a specific assignment, examination or project, to the assignment of a grade of "F" for the course. Students may also be subject to further sanctions imposed by the judicial officer, such as disciplinary probation, suspension or dismissal from the College. For more information, visit Measurable Course Objectives Measurable Course Objectives are outcomes students are expected to achieve by the end of the course. Determine to which of these sets a number belongs: natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, irrational numbers, real numbers, imaginary numbers or complex numbers. Add, subtract, multiply, divide and determine the absolute value of real numbers. Apply the basic properties of real numbers. Solve linear, absolute value and fractional equations. Solve linear and absolute value inequalities. Solve real-world problems that involve the solution of linear, absolute value and fractonal equations and inequalities. Evaluate, add, subtract, multiply and divide polynomial expressions. 13

14 Factor polynomial expressions, including the sum and difference of cubes. Add, subtract, multiply, divide and simplify algebraic fractions. Simplify complex fractions. Identify the domain of rational expressions. Simplify expressions that involve integer and/or rational exponents. Simplify, add, subtract, multiply and divide radical expressions involving nth roots. Add, subtract, multiply, divide complex numbers and express them in standard form. Solve quadratic equations by factoring, extraction of the root, completion of the square and the use of the quadratic formula. Solve equations quadratic in form. Solve radical equations. Solve real-world problems that involve the use of quadratic or radical equations. Solve real world problems that involve the use of direct, inverse and joint variation concepts. Graph linear equations and inequalities. Write the equation of a line in standard, point slope, and slope intercept form, given sufficient information. Determine whether or not a relation is a function. Evaluate functions and find their domain and range. Solve systems of two linear equations in two variables by graphing, substitution and elimination.
