2 Regional Introductory Training Course on the Use of e-learning Tools as Support for Nuclear Education and Training ORGANIZERS: IAEA - Technical Cooperation Project RLA0048 Networking for Nuclear Education, Training, Outreach and Knowledge Sharing - LANENT The Chilean Government, through the Chilean Nuclear Energy Commission (CCHEN) and Metropolitan University of Sciences of Education (UMCE)

3 Project s conception of e-learning: A teaching modality aimed at enhancing independent and significative learning in members of a target audience, working individually or collaboratively, through intensive use of resources from ICT Depending on the grade of teaching guidance available for the learners during the learning process, approaches for e-learning can form a continuum, In one side, a completely independent study with the only support of a digital media resource pack (normally contained on a CD/DVD), At the other side, a tutorial-supported study, in interaction with a teacher/instructor and with peers, normally requiring an informatic platform structured as a virtual learning managing system (LMS, like Moodle, Blakboard or similar).

4 Why a course on e-learning for nuclear education and training? Currently, an increasing number of teachers/trainers are using resources and tools emerging from ICT, but in many cases more as a support for their teaching than as tools for empowering students as independent and competent learners. This approach does not get all he best from those resources, nor from the students themselves. Young students adopt quickly lots of technological innovations, and they enjoy exploring every new application for facilitating their everyday lifes, but in many cases they need some degree of expert guidance for leveraging those resources in an instructional setting for the study of some specific content (particularly of science or engineering). The generational gap still not filled between two different cultures, the alphabetic-phonetic culture (predominant in many teachers/trainers) and the visual-electronic culture (predominant in young students), results in a set of communicational obstacles in every teaching/training modality mediated through ICT. Better learning results can be obtained if we share knowledge, experiences and resources to fill that gap.

6 Target audience of the course Nuclear professionals with teaching/training/outreach duties on nuclear energy and technology in universities or other educational institutions from Latin American and Caribbean countries members of IAEA, participating in the Project RLA0048 and interested in getting a theoretical and practical instruction on e-learning, at an introductory level. Depending on the interest of participants, a series of new and more specialized courses can be planned and delivered in the future, in the context of the new efforts on Sustainable Education on Nuclear Science and Technology
