2 HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE This guide provides information for students, parents and school guidance officers about the Start Uni Now (SUN) program. Read this guide together with our Course and Program Directory and Course and Program Guide. For the latest information, refer to our website WHAT IS SUN? Do you want to get a head start with study and your future career? Do you want to further challenge yourself in your final years of high school? Are you a high achieving student? Are you self-motivated and can manage your own time effectively? If so, the Start Uni Now (SUN) program could be for you. The SUN program is a CQUniversity initiative that allows you the opportunity to study CQUniversity courses while in Years 10, 11 and 12 at high school (Year 10 students are eligible for Term 3 enrolment only). SUN allows you to enrol in a range of CQUniversity courses (subjects) either on campus (face-to-face) or by distance education (online), which you can combine with your regular high school work. WHY STUDY SUN? Some of the benefits of starting university early with SUN include: SNEAK PEEK Not sure whether university is for you or not? SUN provides you with an insight into university life and helps you understand the expectations of studying at a tertiary level. This will help prepare you for the transition from high school to university. DIRECT ENTRY After successful completion of the SUN Program, you may be eligible to apply for direct entry into an undergraduate degree at CQUniversity (excluding quota managed programs). This means you will not need to apply and wait for an offer through a tertiary admissions centre, for example the Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC). To be eligible for direct entry, you must: pass at least one SUN course from the undergraduate degree you are applying for meet all of the prerequisites of the undergraduate degree you are applying for show evidence of Year 12 completion (Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) or equivalent). You can study SUN courses at the same time as your regular high school subjects and if you successfully pass your SUN courses you can receive credit towards your Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). AFFORDABLE SUN courses are offered at a reduced price which is less than a third of the cost a regular university student pays. As a SUN student you can save anywhere between $900 $2752 per course. CREDIT TRANSFERS If you enrol as a CQUniversity student after Year 12, you will be eligible to receive a credit transfer for each SUN course you have passed (providing these SUN courses are part of your degree). This will count towards your degree, reducing the number of courses you need to study when you start university and may reduce the duration of your university program. HOW MUCH DOES SUN COST? SUN courses are offered at a significantly discounted rate of $375 per course. Fees must be paid upfront and cannot be deferred to HECS-HELP but you may be eligible for financial assistance options. In addition to the course cost, there may be other additional expenses such as textbooks and course resources. WHERE CAN I STUDY SUN? You can study SUN regardless of where you live. SUN courses can be studied either on-campus or by distance education which means you can choose a way of studying that suits you best. As a SUN student studying either on-campus or by distance education, you will require regular access to the Internet and a reliable computer. RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS Some distance education courses may require compulsory residential school attendance. Residential schools require you to attend a designated campus for up to five days to undertake practical components of your study. To find out details of residential school attendance, visit WHAT LEVEL OF COMMITMENT IS INVOLVED? It is recommended that you dedicate between hours of study to each of your enrolled courses per week. Studying SUN courses requires good time management skills, the ability to work independently and a proactive attitude. University study is very flexible and this allows you to work your study time around other commitments such as a part-time job or sport. You can study your SUN course/s after school and on weekends. You may also choose to study a SUN course as your sixth subject choice at school. You should speak with your school guidance officer or principal to discuss the best way for you to manage your study commitments.

3 1 WHAT SUPPORT DO I RECEIVE AS A SUN STUDENT? Regardless of whether you study on-campus or by distance education, you have access to many of the same resources and support services as other CQUniversity students, including: SUN PROJECT OFFICER A dedicated staff member who will assist you throughout your SUN study journey. ACADEMIC LEARNING CENTRE (ALC) The ALC is a one-stop-shop for information, advice and resources related to academic writing, mathematics, science and computing requirements of study at CQUniversity. STUDENT SUCCESS CENTRE This Centre provides you with both academic and personal counselling, as well as assistance with time management and study skills. If you have a disability or medical condition, you are encouraged to register with the Inclusion and Accessibility Service to review your support needs. Students located close to a CQUniversity campus or Distance Education Study Centre are also able to access facilities such as campus libraries and computer labs. AM I ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR SUN? To be eligible to apply for the SUN program you must be: an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident of Australia or the holder of a Permanent Humanitarian Visa enrolled in Year 11 or 12 (Year 10 students are eligible for Term 3 enrolment only) achieving an average B grade (or better) across all school subjects (as per your most recent report card). You will also require permission from your principal or school nominee and a parent or guardian. HOW TO APPLY To apply for entry into the SUN program: Download an application form Complete the SUN application form, including signed approval from your parent or guardian and principal or school contact. Submit your application and supporting documentation (certified copy of your most recent report card) to the SUN Project Officer via to sun@cqu.edu.au. Applications must be received at least two weeks prior to the commencement of the relevant term. HOW DO I CHOOSE A SUN COURSE? Did you know that more than 100 CQUniversity courses are available for study as part of the SUN program? When selecting the course you wish to apply for it is important to consider the following: What career you are interested in pursuing? What program is required to pursue that career? Does the SUN course form part of the requirements for that program? Is the course offered in the term I wish to study? Is the course available on-campus, by distance education or both?* *Distance education is the most popular mode of study chosen by SUN students for most courses as it provides you with the flexibility to fit university study around your current school timetable. If you would like to study on campus, speak with a SUN Officer. PHOEBE BICKELL IS A BACHELOR OF NURSING STUDENT WHO COMPLETED THE SUN PROGRAM IN YEAR 12 I m a third year Bachelor of Nursing student at CQUniversity.
