3 Educational Talent Search Can Help You Reach Your Educational Goals The Educational Talent Search Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education (Award number P044A020623, in the amount of $1.02 million, funded through August 31, 2007) provides FREE EDUCATIONAL ADVISING SERVICES to local students, grades Students meet with Educational Advisors at their own schools, attend special programs and are eligible to take part in educational and cultural field trips. This booklet will provide some of the information you will need to know to participate in the ETS program at your school. Sponsored by Tacoma Community College

7 ELIGIBILITY All students are eligible to apply for membership in the Educational Talent Search program. Eligibility will be determined according to federal guidelines. Since membership is limited, students may be placed on a wait list. Ineligible students will be notified. Educational Talent Search is seeking students who are genuinely interested in post-secondary education. STUDENT BEHAVIOR Educational Talent Search will abide by each school s student guidelines concerning expected behavior and disciplinary issues. 1

8 MEETINGS ETS group meetings are mandatory. You are expected to attend meetings as scheduled. Your advisor will provide a hall pass for you to be excused from class. STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO CHECK IN. with their advisor at least once a month. This is your time to talk about your classes, get advice, get help or to get updates on activities. You must check the schedule and make your appointment early. Lunch time is a perfect time to meet with your advisor. We are here to help you achieve your goals; help us help you by participating fully. 2

9 MEETING CANCELLATIONS CANCELLED Due to school scheduling and the fact that your school work is most important, Educational Talent Search will not hold sessions during: Finals Weeks Proficiency Testing Weeks If your Advisor has to cancel a regularly scheduled meeting, you will be contacted or a message will be placed in the morning announcements. 3

10 VISITORS (Non-ETS Students) Students are welcome to attend up to three tutoring sessions and one workshop as a guest. Guests who are interested in joining Educational Talent Search must complete a membership application prior to their next session. Guests who have completed the membership application may continue to attend sessions while awaiting notification of enrollment. 4

11 ETS ACTIVITIES COME PREPARED TO HAVE FUN & LEARN! The ETS Program provides: Career information and exploration Assistance in navigating your way through high school and preparing for college and your future College orientation programs Study skills, decision making and goal setting workshops Financial Aid workshops for parents and students Opportunity to take program sponsored trips Assistance in selecting, applying and enrolling in educational programs after high school SAT/ACT preparation classes Listen to morning announcements and look for flyers to find out what activities are happening at your school. A calendar of ETS activities will be posted at our desk and on our website. ( t_search/start.shtm) 5

12 TRIPS Each year Educational Talent Search takes students on trips to colleges, educational and/or cultural events. To be eligible for these trips, you must be an active participant and have a minimum GPA of 2.0. Active participants participate in one or more of the following: Attend ETS mandatory meetings Check in with Advisor monthly Attend ETS workshops/tutoring sessions Criteria for missing school day: Must have teacher permission to miss class Must be in good standing in class Good standing means: Consistent attendance Current on class work 6

13 ASSESSMENT All ETS participants will complete an annual assessment questionnaire which inquires about student s academic and career goals and achievements towards college readiness. Students will identify their academic and career goal and work with staff to determine a service plan that will guide them towards useful activities and workshops to achieve their goals. ACADEMIC ADVISING All high school participants will receive academic advising through workshops, assessments and individual drop-ins. Academic advising will assist students in selecting the appropriate courses to be able to graduate from high school, prepare for college entry and enter a post-secondary institution of their choice. OTHER SERVICES You are invited to talk with your advisor about any services you may need. We are here to help you succeed. 7

14 MIDDLE SCHOOL WORKSHOPS Various career and college planning workshops will be conducted during the school day. Workshops are designed to assist students in developing the necessary knowledge and to incorporate appropriate skills to ensure their success in both high school and college. AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM ETS provides students with an afterschool program that includes a variety of workshops and activities to develop academic, social and leadership skills. The after-school program will be conducted at least two days per week for 1 1/2 hours. After-School Activities: Tutoring Social development Study skills Beyond high school exploration Educational/recreational/cultural field trips Leadership development Community service 8

15 HIGH SCHOOL WORKSHOPS Various college planning and readiness workshops will be conducted during the school day for participants. Workshops are designed to assist students in developing the necessary knowledge and to incorporate appropriate skills to ensure their success in both high school and college. 9 th grade workshops will focus on understanding the necessary course requirements for graduating from their specific high school and entering into a 4 yr college. Participants will also receive an opportunity to attend a time management and study skills workshop. 10 th grade workshops will continue the work started in grade 9 and will also include workshops in financial aid outlining the various available financial resources to support their goal of attending college. 9

16 11 th grade workshops will focus on financial aid for college. In addition to learning about the various financial aid available, students will have the opportunity to develop a scholarship portfolio. 12 th grade workshops will focus on the necessary steps for applying and enrolling into higher education in addition to securing financial aid. 10

17 TUTORING Tutoring resources will be available by request. If you have any questions about tutoring or getting help in any of your classes, please see ETS Advisor Linda Bautista.
