2 Women in Surgery Needs Assessment Women who are interested in becoming surgeons or who are early in their surgical career may perceive or experience unique challenges. Therefore, the aim of this event is to outline the challenges faced by women in surgery, demonstrate ways in which the obstacles have been overcome, and facilitate mentor/mentee relationships among women interested in surgery. Course Overview The Women in Surgery (WIS) symposium is an academic event focused on issues unique to women in surgery. This one day symposium will offer participants the opportunity to hear from successful surgeons, and to interact and exchange ideas. Objectives Completion of this course will enable participants to: Identify the need for women in surgery and how it will effect patient care in the future. Identify the issues and challenges confronting women in surgery as they seek to advance in the changing, but still male-dominated field. Create mentor/mentee relationships and improve upon existing ones. Accreditation The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Center for Continuing Medical Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 6.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
