The staff and students are an active group of believers seeking to foster personal growth and ministry. We are connected with others through various partnerships, which ensures our programmes remain relevant to the Christian community and the world in which we minister. Our methods of delivery aim to provide for various learner needs and we are continually seeking new methods for taking the study of the Word of God further afield. I trust this prospectus provides information that will motivate you to enrol in one of our courses and in so doing be an active part of our learning community. 5 Major in Biblical and Theological studies In a community of learners intent on developing knowledge and skills relevant to a variety of Christian contexts and ministries WHICH COURSE CAN I STUDY? If you do not have a university degree then you should consider our one, two and three year undergraduate awards: Associate Degree sixteen subjects over two to four years Bachelor of Ministry eight subjects over three to nine years Bachelor of Theology twenty-four subjects over three to nine years Bachelor of Social Sciences twenty-four subjects over three to nine years * these courses are offered through Australian College of Christian Studies. If you do have a non-theological university degree there are a number of postgraduate options for you that are flexible enough to fit in with a busy work and family schedule: Graduate Certificate in Arts four subjects over six to eighteen months Graduate Diploma of Arts eight subjects over one to three years Master of Arts eight subjects over one to three years (after completion of the Graduate Certificate) Master of Divinity twenty four subjects over three to nine years * these courses are offered through Australian College of Christian Studies. 7 The Heart of Studies should reflect a deep learning to be recalled, developed and relied upon during a life time of serving God Assessment Assessment is continual throughout each course and may include a combination of assignments, testimonies, interviews, examinations, journals or practical ministry involvement. Technology Support Technology support is available to assist with the preparation of assignments and for research. Printing and photocopying services are available in the library at minimal charge. Our Libraries Our Libraries offer students a vibrant study space with excellent resources. These include: - current hard copy resources in relevant subject areas. - a growing collection of ebooks and several databases (ATLA and ATLASerials, Religion and Philosophy Collection, Psychology and Behavioural Sciences, Teacher Reference Centre) all accessible online. - Library networks allow students to access the vast collections of other institutions via Inter-Library Loan and some allow a personal visit. 9 Associate Degree of Ministry Duration: 2 year Full Time 6 years Part Time The Associate degree is a two-year full time or part time equivalent nested award within the Bachelor of Ministry and Bachelor of Theology degrees. This degree contributes to the provision of theologically informed ministers and Christian workers with appropriate basic skills for ministry in local churches and other Christian ministries, social and aid organisations and mission groups. On successful completion of the course, students will have developed knowledge, understanding and skills which are relevant for personal Christian living and for a variety of Christian ministry vocations, such as supportive roles in local churches and missionary organisations, Christian aid and social services, youth work, pastoral care and similar vocations. They will have identified one or more of these vocations as their future avenue for Christian services and begun to consider some specialized study for that goal. For some, this course alone may not provide all the vocational preparation that is required and may need to be supplemented with practical training in ministry, specialised denominational training, front-line experience and/or higher-level studies such as a bachelor s degree, perhaps followed by postgraduate study. 10 Bachelor of Theology Duration: 3 year Full Time 9 years Part Time Course Outline 8 first year subjects provide the theoretical framework for Christian ministry, theology and practice. 8 second year subjects selected from the sub disciplines of Systematic Theology (six subjects) and Bible (two subjects) develop critical and analytical understanding of Christian theology and its significance in the contemporary community. 1 Capstone subject of 12 credit points (two semesters) in which the student will critically research and creatively apply theological methods in the development and articulation of a Christian doctrine of God. The Bachelor of Theology is a programme designed to give students an in depth knowledge of the Bible. In the first year, students study a range of foundational biblical and theological subjects. In the second and third years, they expand and build on these studies, deepening and broadening their knowledge and understanding of theology and biblical exegesis. By the end of this course students will have systematically and comprehensively studied Bible and theology through a structured and progressive course of study. 11 Bachelor of Ministry Duration: 3 years Full Time 9 years Part Time Course Outine Twenty-four subjects, a total of 144 credit points are required, including: 8 first year subjects that provide the theoretical framework for Christian ministry, theology and practice. 8 second year subjects that develop the theoretical and practical elements of Christian ministry, introducing key elements for the on-going development of Christian leadership and ministry within diverse ministry contexts and vocations. This course prepares men and women for vocations in Christian ministry in various denominational and other settings. It includes systematic study, wide reading and practical ministry education. The course provides a sound theological foundation, teaches students to explore issues and think critically, and helps them to develop biblical attitudes to ministry. 12 Bachelor of Social Science Duration: 3 year Full Time 9 years Part Time Course Outline 24 subjects (144 credit points) are required for all students working towards the degree. The Bachelor of Social Science degree offered through The Australian College of Christian Studies combines rigorous coursework, experiential learning, and mentoring relationships into a comprehensive educational experience. This degree enables students to develop a personal and professional framework for counselling through integration of the Scriptures and critical study of psychological principals and the major counselling modalities. The Course provides an excellent grounding in the theory and practice of counselling whilst concurrently offering fieldwork opportunities. What sets the Australian College of Christian Education program apart is the Christian framework that encompasses every aspect of the curriculum and promotes study of the whole person, including the spiritual dimension. You will be given the unique opportunity to explore the relationship between faith and psychology in a scriptural context. Associate Degree of Ministry Bachelor of Theology Bachelor of Social Sciences Entry Requirements Satisfactory completion of Year 12 in the Australian school system, or Mature admission for those who have reached the age of 21, or Special Entry admission through interview process, or Satisfactory completion of a Diploma of Christian Ministry and Page 13

14 Postgraduate Courses Masters of Arts Duration 1.5 years Full Time The Master of Arts course is great for those who hold a tertiary qualification in a non-theological discipline, who wish to pursue a graduate qualification in theology, and who are seeking skills in theological studies to enhance their professional work. It can be accessed by first completing the Graduate Certificate in Arts. It is also suitable for those who hold an undergraduate degree in ministry or theology who would like to broaden their studies in these areas. Holders of these degrees can proceed directly to the Master of Arts. NB: Incorporated within this qualification are two exit points. A Graduate Certificate in Arts may be awarded after the successful completion of four (4) subjects) A Graduate Diploma of Arts may be awarded after the successful completion of eight (8) subjects) Discipline specialisations (6 subjects) within the Master of Arts are available in: Christian Leadership Pastoral Counselling Biblical Studi Theology Master of Divinity Duration 3 years Full Time A graduate entry program for students with a previous non-theological degree seeking to undertake their initial theological studies. It is a comprehensive degree leading to Christian Ministry or graduate research study in theology at the highest level. Master of Theology Duration 1.5 years Full Time An advanced graduate program in theology and related disciplines for candidates with a prior three-year theological degree who seek to further specialise in theological studies or pursue research in the future. 15 Postgraduate Course Entry Requirements Graduate Certificate in Arts Graduate Diploma of Arts Master of Arts* Master of Divinity Entry Requirements Satisfactory completion of a three-year bachelor award or equivalent in any discipline, with English Proficiency; or Satisfactory completion of a Vocational Graduate Certificate (provisional admission) or Vocational Graduate Diploma, with English Proficiency; or Professional entry admission with English proficiency. Students not possessing an undergraduate degree meeting the normal entry requirements may seek provisional admission into an MA (with a professional specialisation) via Professional Entry. This entry requires the student to possess a minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in a senior leadership role, consistent with the Typical Progression Pathways outlines below. Typical Progression Pathways: Relevant work experience in a senior leadership role will be determined by the Student Administration Committee of the SCD, and (subject to the above requirements) will include: Full-time church or para-church ministry in senior leadership position. Senior leadership experience in non-government, not-for-profit, community- based and related organisations which act to further the social and/or cultural outworkings of the gospel. Christian business people who are fulfilling positions of responsibility including team and industry leadership. Other relevant senior leadership experience consistent with, and deemed by SAC to be equivalent to, the above. In addition, Overseas students must be at least 18 years of age, must have an IELTS (or equivalent) of 7.0 or greater in all bands of the test and may only enrol in full time courses and cannot complete such courses by more than 25% distance or online learning. The Master of Arts requires satisfactory completion of a three-year bachelor (AQF7) award or equivalent in theology, with English Proficiency; or completion of an AQF8 level theology award such as the Graduate Certificate in Arts. 16 Further Information for International Students These are students who are entering Australia to study on a student visa (This does not include students who are residing outside of Australia during their course of study) a) The SCD welcomes overseas students but admission to the SCD is governed by the requirements of the Australian Government, the SCD requirements (as set out above) and a Member Institution s own regulations. b) Once the overseas student makes application, the student s academic qualifications are matched against the entry criteria to confirm their potential admission. This is done by the Academic Committee within the Member Institution and then approved by the Student Administration Committee of the SCD. Student s previous academic qualifications are evaluated with the help of AEI Country Education Profiles (CEP) online data. The students English language proficiency is determined by an IELTS test (or equivalent). c) Overseas students may only enrol in full time courses and cannot complete such courses by more than 25% distance or online learning. All courses available to overseas students have units available by distance and / or on-line learning. d) All relevant documents must be submitted with the application, as e) Applications which are inadequately documented cannot be considered. f) Courses in the SCD are conducted in English (except the BTh (Korean Medium)) so: i) Students are expected to be proficient in English; i) Assessment tasks shall be set and examined in that language unless special permission to do otherwise is granted by the Academic Board; iii) Students who gained their qualifications for admission to any of the SCD s awards up to the level of Master (coursework) in a language other than English, must accompany their application for admission with an IELTS (or equivalent) result normally of 6.0 or better for Diploma, 6.5 or better for Bachelor and 7.0 or better for coursework postgraduate courses. See the table presented in the English Proficiency section of the SCD Policies and Procedures for a more detailed explanation of the IELTS requirements; iv) Students who gained their qualifications for admission to any of the SCD s postgraduate awards from the level of research Master in a language other than English, must accompany their application for admission with an IELTS (or equivalent) result of normally not less than 7.0 in all bands of the test; v) Applicants already in Australia who are required to take an English test shall be advised accordingly; g) All Member Institutions are required to observe the English language requirements as spelt out in sub-rule (f) (iii) and (iv). h) The information contained in this policy is communicated to the overseas student at the point of initial contact. Other expenses for consideration are the purchase of books, computer, software and stationery. The Emmaus library is an excellent resource and able to support completely all courses offered by the College, however, students should purchase a set of good basic reference books for themselves. Student s Services and Amenities Fee The Australian Government passed legislation allowing Higher Education Institutions to charge a compulsory Student Amenities Fee from 2012 onwards to support a range of student services such as sporting and recreational activities, employment and career advice, child care, financial advice and food services. Eligible students will be able to defer payment of the fee through the SA-HELP system which operates similarly to FEE-HELP. Page 17

18 Fee Help Fee Help is an Australian Commonwealth Government Loan Scheme that assists students who are Australian citizens to pay their tuition fees and is available to students who are studying for credit at Higher Education Diploma level or above. Full details are available on the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations website SA-Help SA HELP is a loan scheme that assists eligible students to pay their student services and amenities fee. Eligible students can choose to defer all or part of their fee for the relevant year. Youth Allowance Students who are under 25 and studying full time at Certificate level or above may be eligible for a youth allowance payment subject to certain means tests. More information can be found at Austudy To be considered for Austudy you must be aged 25 or over and: studying an approved full-time course at an approved institution, or undertaking a full-time Australian Apprenticeship. Full-time secondary education, graduate, undergraduate courses, and some Masters, diplomas, and TAFE courses are approved for Austudy. Unlike Youth Allowance, there is no independence test for Austudy. If you qualify for Austudy you are considered independent. This means the parental means test does not apply. Your previous studies may affect your eligibility for Austudy Further information can be accessed via Page 18

19 Intensive Courses Throughout the year students are able to undertake additional studies through intensives. These subjects, with full credit point status, are taught in a compressed format. Pastoral Epistles 16 February 2015 to 19 February Study Tour The College offers an annual study tour to biblical lands where the student can experience the places where our Lord Jesus and the disciples lived and ministered. See the places where the early church was founded and stand in the shadow of great biblical leaders and teachers. Each year the destination places vary; Israel and Jordon or Greece and Turkey. Emmaus also offers a Mission Field Trip each year where students will observe and experience third world mission projects. We offer the following VOCATIONAL courses: NAT Certificate III in Christian Ministry and Theology 10433NAT Certificate IV in Christian Ministry and Theology CRICOS No J Certificate III in Christian Ministry and Theology (10432NAT) This course is nominally 240 hours of study (approximately 6 months). Depending on previous skills, knowledge, Christian life experiences, current and past roles within a church (or other ministry), this course duration may be reduced by applying for advance standing (otherwise known as Recognition of Prior Learning - RPL). 21 Diploma of Christian Ministry and Theology (10434NAT) This is a significant qualification with the prerequisite that a student has completed or can demonstrate equivalence to the Certificate IV in Christian Ministry and Theology. This course is suitable for mature Christians. 25 Where is Miranda Campus? Location of the Miranda Campus The Miranda Campus is located in the Shire at Miranda. Miranda is just over half an hour drive south from Sydney s central business district and is served well by both rail and bus public transport, giving quick and reliable access to the city. Miranda is also just 45 minutes from Wollongong. Getting to and from the Campus The nearest train station is Miranda. You can catch a bus from Miranda Station to the campus. Bus - Route 971 to Hurstville - embark from opposite. Miranda Station "Miranda Interchange, Kiora Rd (Stand 6), get off at Hungry Jacks on Port Hacking Road (corner of Box Road), about 5 minutes. For a shortcut to the College, use the side gate at 175 Port Hacking Road (same building as Southside Christian Fellowship) Page 25

26 Where is Macquarie Park Campus? Location of the Park Campus The Macquarie Park Campus is located in Macquarie Park, a metropolitan suburb of Australia s largest city, Sydney. Macquarie Park is situated 17 kilometers north-west of Sydney s central business district and is served well by both rail and bus public transport, giving quick and reliable access to the city, the ur and other attractions. Please note that Macquarie Park is sometimes referred to as North Ryde. Getting to and from the Campus Macquarie University railway station is the closest railway station and is located on the Epping to Chatswood link of the Northern rail line of Sydney's Cityrail network. It is 5 min walk from the college campus. Macquarie Park is also well-serviced by bus facilities by Sydney Buses and Hillsbus. The M2 Hills Motorway runs along the northern border to the Sydney CBD. Epping Road is a major arterial road in the area that runs east from the railway station to the Pacific Highway. Page 26
