Notwithsting this, Fulties my develop their own speifi guidelines s permitted within the frmewk of these Rules. 3 Definitions 3.1 The Mster of Philosophy shll, in generl, hve the objetives of trining students in reserh methodology tehniques b developing ritil evlution skills pproprite to their reserh topi trining students in the pplition of suh methods by onduting speified progrm of reserh under pproprite supervision the development of new knowledge where possible d providing trining in literture nlysis e enourging debte in the substntive re of the thesis t n dvned level. 3.2 Exminers of the Mster of Philosophy should stisfy themselves tht the idte hs

2 though understing of the relevnt methodology s demonstrted by though ritil review of the literture b demonstrted ompetene through judiious seletion pplition of pproprite methods to yield meningful results demonstrted the pity to evlute ritilly these results presented ler well written thesis in dne with the fmt speified in 8.3 below. 4 Ademi sting 4.1 The demi sting required f eptne s idte f the Mster of Philosophy in the University shll be: relevnt degree of Bhel of the University of Adelide, in whih the idte hs hieved minimum of distintion verge b relevnt Honours degree of the University of Adelide t upper seond lss level higher relevnt Mster by Coursewk degree of the University of Adelide ontining less thn 15 redit points reserh, in whih the idte hs hieved minimum of distintion verge d relevnt Mster by Coursewk degree of the University of Adelide ontining minimum of 15 redit points by reserh, with n overll grde of Credit level higher grde t Distintion level higher in the Reserh Component e relevnt Mster by Reserh degree of the University of Adelide. 4.2 A person who holds qulifition of nother university s speified in 4.1 bove, equivlent thereof, my be epted s idte provided tht the progrm of study undertken the demi strd rehed re equivlent to those required of idte who is grdute of the University of Adelide. 4.3 Applints f Mster of Philosophy must stisfy the minimum English lnguge profiieny requirement s set by the University. 5 Credit f wk previously ompleted 5.1 At the time of pplition, the Committee my grnt redit in Mster of Philosophy f reserh undertken in nother progrm in the University in nother university tertiry institution. 5.2 At the time of pplition, the Committee my grnt redit in Mster of Philosophy by mixed reserh oursewk where: Any Courses re offered in dne with Rule 8.5. Unspeified redit f ungrded ourses will not be permitted b The totl mount of redit grnted does not exeed 16 units Courses hve not been ounted towrds nother wrd. 5.3 In onsidertion f eptne under Rule 5.1, the Committee must be stisfied tht the person is of suh demi sting s would be required of other idtes f the degree b the person s progress so fr hs been stisfty the reserh f whih redit is grnted is both relevnt of stisfty strd. 5.4 All pplitions f redit must be pproved by the Grdute Centre. 6 Enrolment 6.1 A person shll not be enrolled s idte f the degree of Mster of Philosophy unless: b the pplint s proposed reserh topi is eptble to the University the Shool/Disipline responsible f the supervision of the idte s wk there re vilble t lest two superviss ble to provide supervision of the proposed idy throughout its likely durtion. The prinipl supervis shll be member of the demi stff of the Shool/Disipline of the University in whih the idte is enrolled suitble resoures filities re vilble (either in the University, by rrngement eptble to the Fulty, elsewhere) f the proposed reserh to be undertken.

3 6.2 Exept with the permission of the Den of Grdute Studies, idte my not enrol onurrently in nother demi progrm 6.3 Exept with the permission of the Den of Grdute Studies, idte who is permitted to enrol onurrently in nother demi progrm who is grnted leve must intermit ll demi progrms in whih he she is enrolled. 7 Durtion of idture mode of study 7.1 A idte my proeed to the degree by full-time study, if the Hed of the Shool/Disipline onerned is stisfied tht the idte hs dequte time to pursue supervised reserh under the ontrol of the University, by hlf-time study. Exept in irumstnes pproved by the Committee, the wk f the degree shll be ompleted the thesis submitted: 7.2 in the se of full-time idte, not less thn one yer n me thn two yers from the dte of ommenement of idture b in the se of hlf-time idte, not less thn two yers n me thn four yers from the dte of ommenement of idture in the se of idte grnted redit under Rule 5.1, the idture shll nmlly expire: i ii in the se of full-time idte, not less thn one yer not me thn two yers from the dte the idte ommened wk in the other progrm in the se of hlf-time idte, not less thn two yers not me thn four yers from the dte the idte ommened wk in the other progrm. 8 Wk f the degree 8.1 A Mster of Philosophy will be offered in two fms: 100% reserh b mixed reserh oursewk. The mixed reserh oursewk Mster of Philosophy omprises two thirds of the ssessble ontent of the degree by reserh the remining one-third (15-16 redit point units) by oursewk. 8.2 Students my elet to proeed to the Mster of Philosophy by either 100% reserh by mixed reserh oursewk, subjet to Fulty pprovl. 8.3 Trnsfer from the 100% reserh Mster of Philosophy to the mixed reserh oursewk Mster of Philosophy, vie vers, will not nmlly be permitted fter the first six months of idture hlf time equivlent. 8.4 Where idte is proeeding to the degree by 100% reserh, ny ourses tken by the student, up to the vlue of 16 units, re to fm prt of the Strutured Progrm will not be onsidered in the ssessment f the degree. Suh ourses should be udited not be fmlly enrolled in ssessed. 8.5 A idte who elets to proeed to the Mster of Philosophy by mixed reserh oursewk, my, subjet to Fulty pprovl, selet ourses with minimum vlue of 15 units mximum vlue of 16 units (i.e. one third of the degree) from: Any relevnt Msters by Coursewk ourses of 6 units less listed in the Clendr b Any relevnt Honours ourses of 6 units less listed in the Clendr. 8.6 All ourses undertken by idte in the mixed reserh oursewk Mster of Philosophy will be ssessed ginst the University s strd grding sheme; however, oursewk mrks, with the exeption of filing grde, my be withheld until thesis submission degree ompletion. 8.7 Where idte is proeeding to the degree by mixed reserh oursewk, he she shll be required to pss both the oursewk thesis omponents independently, ll oursewk requirements must be ompleted to the stisftion of the Fulty/Shool befe the Mster of Philosophy thesis is submitted to the Grdute Centre f exmintion. 8.8 As domesti students enrolled in the Mster of Philosophy re funded under the RTS sheme: Any redit grnted f oursewk will redue the RTS idture expiry dtes. Where the student is sholrship holder, sholrship expiry dtes will be redued in prllel. Therefe, ny pplition f redit must be pproved by the Adelide Grdute entre to permit f the relevnt djustments to be mde b Courses nnot be repeted repled in the se of filure exept on fee pying bsis There n be no exit point to oursewk outome e.g. Grdute Diplom Certifite trnsfer of oursewk redit from the Mster of Philosophy to Coursewk Progrm. Cidtes who seek these options must enrol in Coursewk Progrm from ommenement.

4 8.9 Cidtes must t ll times bide by the Austrlin Code f the Responsible Condut of Reserh ssoited poliies of the University of Adelide The University reognises tht thesis my tke vriety of fmts tht re influened by the Disipline field of study. Students should onsult their supervis(s) the University s Speifitions f Thesis, if pplible, the Speifi Ademi Progrm Rules, to determine the most pproprite fmt. b Wk presented in the thesis must hve been produed during the period of idture. Published wks inluded in thesis under these rules must hve been published epted by publishers pproved by the Disipline in dne with DEEWR riteri f the Higher Edution Reserh Dt Colletion. d Where pproprite, texts my be submitted in mnusript fm suitbly identified s suh. e The thesis will nmlly be submitted in English. Where demi resons to submit the thesis in lnguge other thn English exist, written pplition should be mde to the Den of Grdute Studies f pprovl. Where pprovl is grnted, n bstrt in English will be required t the time of submission Irrespetive of the nture of the thesis, its ontent, in prt in totl, must not hve been epted f ny other degree t the University of Adelide other demi institution in the nme of the idte. The retive wk should be the reserh outome, while the exegesis tht ompnies it should desribe the reserh proess elbte, eluidte ple in ontext the rtisti prtie undertken. 9 Required progrm of tivities t the ommenement of idture 9.1 Eh idte (inluding those on remote idture) will be enrolled on provisionl bsis f t lest the first twelve months of the degree. 9.2 A mj review of progress fter twelve months will reommend onfirmtion of Msters idture, further period of onditionl idture not exeeding six months, termintion. 9.3 Cidtes grnted further period of onditionl enrolment will undergo seond mj review t the end of this time period. No further periods of onditionl enrolment will be permitted. 9.4 Continution of enrolment t the end of this period will depend on overll demi progress the ompletion of set tivities to the stisftion of the Shool/Disipline onerned. These tivities will fm prt of Strutured Progrm of tivities extending through the idture. 9.5 Suh tivities will be determined by the Shool/ Disipline through whih the idte is enrolled in the first yer must inlude the ompletion presenttion of the reserh proposl other progrms skills trining deemed neessry by the Shool/Disipline.

5 9.6 The reserh proposl must be greed submitted to the Adelide Grdute Centre preferbly within three, but no lter thn six months ( hlf-time equivlent) from the ommenement of idture. 9.7 Trnsfer to the Dot of Philosophy my be pproved fter twelve months of idture prttime equivlent subjet to the following onditions: Hving met the dmission requirements f the Dot of Philosophy t the time of enrolment into the Mster of Philosophy b Stisfty ompletion of the Mj Review of Progress Approvl of the pplition to upgrde idture by the Fulty the Committee. 9.8 Trnsfer to the Dot of Philosophy my be pproved fter eighteen months of idture prttime equivlent subjet to the following onditions: Stisfty ompletion of the Mj Review of Progress b F students in the mixed reserh oursewk strem, ompletion of minimum of 12 units of oursewk Approvl of the pplition to upgrde idture by the Fulty the Committee. 9.9 The Fulty the Committee will nmlly only pprove idte f upgrde where: there is evidene of reserh output, suh s publitions, refereed onferene ppers, sholrly wks retive rts b revised reserh proposl f the Dot of Philosophy whih n resonbly be ompleted in 3-4 yers (less the time lredy spent in the Msters idture), hs been provided. 10 Remote idture 10.1 Initil enrolment s remote idte my be permitted on demi grounds where the Shool/Disipline onerned n ensure the provision of externl supervision, filities ffilition to the stisftion of the Reserh Edution Development Committee Unless otherwise exempted, remote idte will nmlly be required to omplete period/s of residene in the University of Adelide s determined by the Reserh Edution Development Committee in onsulttion with the Shool/Disipline onerned Notwithsting Rule 10.2, remote idte will nmlly be required to undertke his/her idture in n internl ttendne mode until suh time s the Ce Component of the Strutured Progrm hs been ompleted In dne with rule 7.1, remote idte my proeed to the degree either by full-time hlftime study On the reommendtion of the Shool/Disipline, the Committee t ny time my permit n enrolled student to enrol s remote idte subjet to the onditions speified in 10.1, bove A remote idte my be permitted to onvert to n internl mode of ttendne t ny time shll be subjet to the onditions nmlly pplied Notwithsting Rules 10.1 to 10.6 bove, remote idtes re lso required to bide by the other Rules guidelines f the degree of Mster of Philosophy. 11 Review of demi progress 11.1 The Committee my review the progress of idte t ny time during the progrm of idture, if the idte s progress is unstisfty, my terminte the idture Progress onfirmtion of idture will our twelve months fter enrolment (see 9.2 bove). Additionl reviews will our round Otober eh yer with written repts fwrded to the Den of Grdute Studies. A idte s re-enrolment in the following yer is onditionl upon stisfty progress in the yer of the review. 12 Absene from the University Exept f remote idtes, the Committee, on the reommendtion of the Shool/Disipline onerned, my permit idte to pursue wy from the University wk onneted with the reserh f the degree. Suh permission my only be grnted under speil irumstnes during provisionl idture. 13 Leve of bsene A idte whose wk is interrupted f period of time my be grnted umultive leve by the Committee of up to twelve months. If n pplition f leve is pproved, the minimum mximum periods speified in Rule 7 will be djusted dingly by dding the length of the pproved leve. 14 In exeptionl irumstnes, the Committee my grnt idte umultive leve in exess of 12 months. Where student is grnted this exeptionl leve, the University will endev to ensure, but

6 nnot gurntee, tht pproprite supervision resoures will be vilble to suppt the student on return from leve. 15 In some fields of study, time plys ritil role in the urreny of the reserh. In suh ses, the reserh projet my no longer be urrent following leve the University my not be ble to seure supervision in n re where urreny is ompromised. Additionlly, the University my not be ble to ommodte n mendment to the reserh projet. Under these irumstnes, ontinution of idture my not be possible the only options will be: withdrwl by the idte b termintion of idture by the University. 16 The idture of student who tkes leve from the University without pprovl will be suspended immeditely, on notifition of the Adelide Grdute Centre. 17 A idte grnted leve must infm the Adelide Grdute Centre in writing of resumption of idture within two weeks of the pproved dte of return. 18 A idte seeking to extend period of leve must pply in writing f n extension of leve t lest one week pri to the iginlly pproved dte of return. 19 Withdrwl from idture 19.1 A student my withdrw from idture t ny time Cidture my be reinstted t future dte without demi onsequenes, subjet to the ontinuing urreny of the reserh undertken pri to withdrwl the urreny of the reserh skills of the idte. The pprovl of the Hed of Shool the ongoing vilbility of pproprite supervision resoures re lso required. 20 Suspension of idture A student s idture my be suspended f filure to omply with ny fml requirement of idture, inluding: filing to bide by the responsibilities of reserh idtes s detiled in the Reserh Student Hbook b filing to undertke required review of progress by the due dte extended due dte filing to respond to ny University respondene sent to the nominted miling ddress mpus emil ddress within two months of the requested dte of response d filing to ept resonble offers of supervision filitted by the University e tking leve without pri pprovl f filing to return from leve on the greed dte g filing to notify the Adelide Grdute Centre of return from leve within two weeks of return h Non-pyment of University fees hrges. 21 Termintion of idture A student s idture my be terminted where: progress is unstisfty following review of progress, whether progrmmed otherwise b where idture hs been suspended f me thn twelve months where the idte hs filed to omplete the e omponent of the strutured progrm within six months hlf-time equivlent of ommenement. 22 A terminted idture my only be reinstted following suessful ppel. 23 Extension of idture Irrespetive of full-time hlf-time sttus, idte my be grnted by the Committee one extension of idture only of six months beyond the mximum period speified in Rule 7. If the thesis hs not been submitted by the end of the extended period, the idture will lpse. 24 Completion of thesis outside the University A idte who hs ompleted the equivlent of one yer of full-time wk under the ontrol of the University, who hs ompleted the experimentl wk (where pproprite) whose progress is suffiiently well dvned to permit the stisfty ompletion of the thesis outside the University, my be grnted permission by the Committee to omplete the writing-up of the thesis outside the University. If suh permission is grnted the idte will be llowed either twelve months until

7 the end of idture, whihever is the lesser, to submit the thesis. If the thesis hs not been submitted by the end of the writing-up period the idture will lpse. 25 Lpsed idture 25.1 Cidture shll be deemed to hve lpsed if the idte fils to submit his/her thesis within the mximum durtion of the progrm s speified in Rule 7, provided tht idture hs not otherwise been withdrwn, suspended terminted A idture, whih hs lpsed f not me thn twelve months, my be resumed if the ompleted thesis, whih hs not deprted from the field of study tht ws being pursued befe the idture lpsed, is subsequently submitted to the Diret of Adelide Grdute Centre. The thesis will only be epted f exmintion if the Shool/Disipline ertifies tht it is stisfty to tht Shool/Disipline Approvl of the Committee is required f the resumption of lpsed idture under ny other onditions. 26 Intention to submit thesis A idte shll notify the Diret of Adelide Grdute Centre, in writing, pproximtely three months befe he she expets to submit thesis f exmintion. A summry of the thesis, together with the proposed thesis title, shll be submitted t pri to lodgment of the thesis. 27 Submission exmintion of the thesis 27.1 On ompletion of the pproved progrm of study reserh, inluding ll oursewk requirements, idte shll submit thesis embodying the results of tht study reserh, my submit lso, in suppt of the thesis, other relevnt mteril. b The idte's Shool must notify the Adelide Grdute Centre t the time of thesis submission whether the thesis submitted omprises 100% 67% of the ssessble ontent of the degree. The thesis shll embody the vlues desribed in Rule A thesis will nmlly be written in English. b Where sound demi resons exist f submission of thesis in lnguge other thn English, n pplition f pprovl my be mde in writing to the Den of Grdute Studies. The pplition must hve the suppt of the superviss Postgrdute Codint/Hed of Disipline the Hed of Shool. If the Den of Grdute Studies pproves the submission of thesis in lnguge other thn English, the submission must be ompnied by n bstrt written in English The fmt of thesis whih inptes publitions / mnusripts shll be in dne with Rules 8.5 to The Hed of Shool/Disipline shll ertify tht the thesis is wthy of exmintion In the se of thesis submitted in the res of musil, rtisti visul prtie, presenttion my be in one of three fms: ) by theetil thesis, b) by one me retive wks n exegesis, ) series of musi perfmne redings n exegesis In the se of thesis submitted in the res of musil, rtisti visul prtie, the retive wk the exegesis will not be exmined seprtely but s n integrted whole onstituting the iginl substntil ontribution to knowledge required from Msters idtes In the se of visul rts, the exminers will ttend the exhibition t whih time they will be given opy of the exegesis in tempry binding. A finl opy of the exegesis will be provided to the exminers within three months of their viewing the retive wk The thesis ny other mteril submitted shll be ssessed by t lest one exminer who is externl to the University No thesis, mteril publitions presented f ny other degree within this ny other institution shll be so submitted With the exeption of suitbly referened wk, mteril, both physil intelletul, presented f exmintion should hve been generted during the period of idture The Committee shll presribe the fm in whih the thesis shll be submitted the number of opies to be submitted. 28 Appointment of exminers 28.1 Cidtes shll hve the right, pri to the ommenement of the exmintion proess, to identify people they do not wish to exmine their theses. Any suh objetions should be submitted to the Diret of Adelide Grdute Centre, t the sme time s the notifition of intention to submit required under Rule 26. Suh objetions do not serve s veto Assessment of the thesis shll in every se be by no fewer thn two exminers ppointed by the Committee of whom:

8 t lest one shll be externl to the University b t lest one shll be n demi member ffilite of tertiry institution The idte s superviss shll not be eligible to t s exminers The exminers shll be requested to rept in English in suh fm s the Committee will determine to reommend one of eh of the lterntives listed in Rules After onsidertion of the repts of the exminers, the Committee my ppoint third externl exminer / n externl rbitrt. 29 Exmintion results 29.1 After onsidertion of the repts of the exminers, oursewk results where pplible suh other infmtion s it thinks fit, the Committee shll determine tht: the idte be wrded the degree of Mster of Philosophy unonditionlly b the idte be wrded the degree of Mster of Philosophy subjet to retions revisions required by the exminers in the thesis to be mde to the stisftion of the University in the opy intended f deposit with the University Librry the idte be not wrded the degree of Mster of Philosophy but be permitted to resubmit the thesis f re-exmintion in revised fm d the idte be not wrded the degree of Mster of Philosophy Where the Committee determines tht the idte be wrded the degree of Mster of Philosophy, the Committee shll lso determine n overll grde In the se of thesis presented f re-exmintion s provided f in Rule 29.1(), the thesis will, s fr s possible, be ssessed by the iginl exminers A thesis presented f re-exmintion will not be submitted f further re-exmintion. 30 Thesis mendments following exmintion The time limits f revision of the thesis re: three months where the exmintion result is to wrd the degree following retions revisions to be mde to the stisftion of the University (see Rule 29.1( b)) b twelve months where the exmintion result is not to wrd the degree but to permit resubmission of the thesis in revised fm (see Rule 29.1()). 31 Cidtes who require dditionl time to omplete revisions must pply to the Den of Grdute Studies f permission, stting the resons f the request. The request should be pproved by the prinipl supervis the Hed of Shool/Disipline the Postgrdute Codint. 32 Deposit of thesis Suh number of opies of thesis ny other mteril on whih the degree is wrded shll be deposited in the Brr Smith Librry elsewhere s determined by the Committee. Unless otherwise determined by the Committee, the opies shll be vilble f lon photoopy. 33 Lon photoopy of thesis A idte who does not wish to llow the thesis to be lent photoopied when it is deposited in the Librry under Rule 32 shll mke written pplition to the Diret of Adelide Grdute Centre, t the sme time s he she notifies his her intention to submit under Rule 26. The withholding of suh permission the period of time involved shll be determined by the Committee. 34 Grdution Subjet to Chpter 89 of the Sttutes, idtes who hve stisfied the requirements f ny wrd of the University shll be dmitted to tht wrd. 35 Posthumous wrd If person dies fter ompleting, in the opinion of the Committee, substntilly ompleting the requirements of the wrd, the University my onfer the wrd posthumously. 36 Revoking the wrd If the Committee is stisfied tht, when the Mster of Philosophy ws onferred on person, tht person ws subsequently found to hve brehed ethil requirements, e.g. they: did not possess the relevnt qulifitions

9 b hd not ompleted the neessry requirements. The Vie-Chnell with uthity devolved to him/her by Counil my revoke the wrd.
