Philippines medical system accepted by Medical Council of India (MCI) is BS-MD of 5.5 (1.5+4) years together. Students are to complete 1.5 years of Basic Science (BS) and 4 years of MD (Doctor of Medicine). This BS-MD together is considered as equal to MBBS in India on clearing the MCI screening test. In countries like America (USA), Canada, Australia, it is a total of 8 years for BSMD. The students are to complete 4 years of Basic Science (BS) and 4 years of MD (Doctor of Medicine) in America, Canada, or Australia. Just like MCAT exam in USA or Canada, in Philippines the students are required to qualify NMAT exam with the required cut off mark in order to seek progression to MD after BS. NMAT is emphasised in order to make the foundation very strong before the students face medical papers in MD. This make the students well equipped to deal with medical papers in a very comprehensive and systematic pattern. This system has helped universities in Philippines to maintain high pass rate in MD. The pass rate of MD in Philippines is much higher than the pass rate of MBBS in Indian medical colleges.
