2 Crest Philosophy The crest of the College is a cross within a circle. The cross symbolises the sacrifice that we, as Christians, must make to ensure that we leave this world a better place, while the circle symbolises the eternal and all-encompassing nature of our God. College Motto The motto, Seek Truth, comes directly from the aims of the College. There is always a need to seek, and the word itself implies effort and willingness to work according to one s capacity. Truth is the object of all discovery, implying accuracy with regard to calculations, and never being satisfied with mediocrity. The ultimate truth is God, who is the object of our seeking. Mandurah Catholic College: Offers a K-12 Catholic holistic education for over 1600 students. Supports the academic, social and faith development of all students. Is under the patronage of the Holy Family and symbolises the commitment to pastoral care for all members of the College community. Provides dedicated Primary and Secondary School structures to best address the learning needs of our students. Provides students with a learning environment that gives them opportunities to grow in their Catholic faith. Builds relationships with the community on an international, national and local basis. Is modern, well-resourced and uses the latest technologies to enhance a wide variety of opportunities for student learning. Provides a positive and safe learning environment in which students are supported by both peers and staff. Provides a diverse and balanced curriculum that allows students to develop their natural abilities and to strive for excellence in everything they do. Provides staff and students with opportunities to build their leadership potential. Provides staff with opportunities to strive for excellence. 4. LEADERSHIP AT THE COLLEGE Those in leadership roles at the College are encouraged to work collaboratively focusing on teachers providing students with learning environments that are engaging and challenging to their students so that they develop a strong desire to achieve well and for ongoing learning. They must also understand the implications of the Mandate set for Catholic schools by the Bishops of WA. Within the context of Christian leadership, those in leadership positions should be excellent communicators who promote collegiality and harmony amongst all members of staff. They also must be visionary and pro-active, responsive to the overarching vision and direction of the College. The College Leadership Team includes the Vice-Principal, Deputy Principal of Teaching and Learning, Deputy Principal of Pastoral Care, Head of Primary and Business Manager whose key role is to support, advise and assist the Principal in all aspects of the College. The Primary Leadership Team includes Vice Principal, Head of Primary, Assistant Head of Primary and Business Manager whose key role is to support, advise and assist the Principal in all aspects of the College.

3 The Secondary Leadership Team includes the Vice-Principal, Deputy Principal of Teaching and Learning, Deputy Principal of Pastoral Care, and Business Manager whose key role is to support, advise and assist the Principal in all aspects of the College. 5. PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: VICE PRINCIPAL The Vice Principal supports the Principal in the leadership of the College and assumes the role of Acting Principal in the absence of the Principal. As a member of the College Leadership Team, the Vice Principal collaborates with and shares in the authority and responsibility of the Principal in the overall leadership and management of the College. The Vice Principal is also delegated to exercise direct responsibility in specifically designated areas, including teaching and learning, staff and professional development, whilst collaborating with the Deputy Principals, Head of Primary, Business Manager, Directors of Ministry Technologies, Learning Support and Sport, as necessary. The Vice Principal is a senior teacher, administrator and leader, and in this capacity, is expected to provide a strong model for other teachers. Therefore, in addition to administrative duties, the Vice Principal will be required to undertake a teaching role, preferably teaching Religious Education. This will reflect the balance between staffing requirements and role responsibility as negotiated with the Principal. There are four domains, which are significant action areas in the promotion of the educational mission of the Catholic Church. These domains are: Catholic identity Education Stewardship Community Focus. This mission has been identified by the 2008 Leadership Framework for Catholic Schools in WA, and the Quality Catholic School Review and Improvement Framework, both of which are aligned to the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership s (AITSL) and the National Professional Standards for Principals. When combined they provide an integrated model for excellence in school leadership. These documents also highlight the importance of leaders modelling a future focus in order to be effective in any school. The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) has incorporated three leadership requirements: vision and values; knowledge and understanding; and, personal qualities and social and interpersonal skills; to define the five key professional practices for Principals. These are: Leading teaching and learning Developing self and others Leading improvement, innovation and change Leading the management of the school Engaging and working with the community The position description of the Vice Principal reflects each of these frameworks. Mandurah Catholic College requires appointees to successfully undertake their duties under the following five key components of leadership: 1. Catholic Identity 2. Education 3. Innovation and Change 4. Stewardship 5. Community focus 6. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES 6.1 Catholic Identity Catholic leadership promotes the purpose and aims of evangelisation. As a key member of the College Leadership Team, the Vice Principal assists the Principal in the development of the College as a faith community by ensuring that Christian values are

4 reflected in attitudes, policies and practice. The Vice Principal will work closely with the Director of Ministry, ensuring the ecclesial nature of Catholic education is recognised by actively contributing to the mission of evangelisation. Be an active member of the Catholic Church, free from any impediment to full acceptance by the Church. Have completed Accreditation for Leadership of the Religious Education Learning Area, and thereafter, to maintain this level of Accreditation. Provide exemplary Christian and professional leadership for all members of the Mandurah Catholic College community. Actively and publicly promote the College Purpose, Beliefs and Values as a Catholic school in collaboration with the College Leadership Team. Provide personal witness to Catholic values, including encouraging and participating in the liturgical, sacramental and prayer life of the College. Assist in the development and implementation of the College Strategic Plan, which includes the goals contained within two key documents, the CEWA School Review and Improvement Framework and the Bishops of WA Mandate for Catholic Schools. Promote the integration of the Catholic context across all educational programs by integrating a holistic approach to education. Actively support the role of the College in its links to the wider Church and Church agencies, personally and in the role of Vice Principal. Promote the adoption of civic virtue, high educational standards and the pursuit of excellence in the College community. Specific Responsibilities: Support the Principal in working with the College Leadership Team and the College community to implement the Strategic Plan, Annual School Improvement Plan, National Quality Standards, and Curriculum Plan. Liaise with the Director of Ministry in order to set annual goals which promote the Catholic ethos of the College, and which are aligned to the College Strategic Plan. Develop or support measures that enhance the Catholic identity of the College. Ensure a high standard of production in the formal methods of College communication, including Parent Information Evenings, promotional materials, such as website information, College electronic promotional information, and the Prospectus, online learning mediums, modes of staff communication, the Annual Report and Yearbook - Inspire. Promote Christian leadership and a unity of purpose amongst all staff in forming a College professional learning community with Christian ideals. Promote the integration of a Catholic values perspective across all areas of the curriculum and learning programs. 6.2 Education The Vice Principal works with the Principal in order to create a culture of challenge and support, enabling effective teaching that promotes enthusiastic, independent learners, committed to life-long learning. Leadership in education involves the capacity to lead, innovate, manage and monitor the school improvement process, so as to develop a culture of effective teaching for the attainment of knowledge, acquisition of Christian values, the discovery of truth, so students are able to achieve in all aspects of their development. The Vice Principal demonstrates a high level of commitment to create an innovative, responsive and effective inter-connected professional learning community within the College. Inspire a passion for learning and inspiration for teachers. Set high expectations for the College through careful collaborative planning, monitoring and reviewing the effectiveness of learning in collaboration with other members of the College Leadership Team.

5 Guide, nurture and mentor innovative, engaging and rigorous pedagogical practices amongst teachers and leaders so as to provide purposeful learning experiences for all students Lead and facilitate measures to achieve best practice in relation to the learning and teaching processes, as well as high quality models of assessment and reporting, and College policies and procedures. Actively support measures that set high standards of behaviour and attendance amongst students, promoting a safe environment that enhances student learning which necessitates effective behaviour management practices amongst staff, whilst encouraging active engagement from students. Research and promote curriculum, teaching and learning processes so as to develop a strong professional learning community within the College, thereby engaging in strategic and future-orientated thinking in education. Examine emerging technologies for their potential impact on and use in teaching and learning, and creative expression, whilst promoting the use of current technologies to enhance learning, engagement, creativity and achievement. Implement legislated educational models, practices and procedures. Specific Responsibilities: Oversee and support the Deputy of Teaching and Learning and Head of Primary in the development of curriculum, teaching and learning from Kindergarten to Year 12, catering for the needs and developmental levels of students. Oversee the development and implementation of the NQS National Quality Standards, ACARA Australian Curriculum, and primary and secondary school programs, procedures and policies associated with the WA School Curriculum and Standards Authority in conjunction with the Deputy of Teaching and Learning and Head of Primary. Assistant the Deputies and Head of Primary with the Heads of Learning Area, Pastoral and Primary Meetings. Promote Religious Education as the first Learning Area. Oversee the development of a high quality of pastoral care for students in order to enhance learning and growth, in collaboration with the Deputy Principal of Pastoral Care, Head of Primary and Director of Ministry. Oversee the provision of effective individualized educational programs and opportunities for students in collaboration with the Director of Learning Support. These would include: Individual Education Plan (IEP), Teaching and Learning Adjustment Plan (TALA) (Also known as Curriculum Adjustment Plans (CAP), Individual Transition Plan (ITP), and/or Health Care Plan (HCP). Ensure the necessary requirements of the teaching and assessment of courses, including the distribution of syllabi, Course Statements and programs, standards, and deadlines, are made available to secondary students and parents via the College online Learning Management System, SEQTA. Oversee the development, implementation and monitoring of assessment and reporting procedures, and parent-teacher-student interviews, in collaboration with Deputy Principal of Teaching and Learning and Head of Primary. Identify and use data, including analysing the results of external examinations and testing, working with key stakeholders to develop measures for school improvement and to cultivate opportunities for high achievement. Liaise with the Head of Primary with regard to the implementation of an effective school learning program for all primary students. Liaise with the Deputy Principal of Teaching and Learning with regard to the implementation of an effective school learning program for all secondary students. Liaise with the Deputy Principal of Teaching and Learning and the Head of Vocational Educational Training with regards to the implementation of an effective Senior School program and appropriate course counselling procedures that promote both exemplary student achievement and high quality post-secondary options for students. Liaise with the Director of Learning Technologies with regard to the professional development of staff so as to implement technologies to enhance student learning and achievement.

6 Liaise and support the Director of Sport with regard to the appropriate procedures, protocols and implementation of the Mandurah Catholic College Sports Club. Ensure the necessary legislative requirements are adhered to, including the ACARA Australian Curriculum standards, NQS National Quality Schools, the relevant CEWA Policies, Disability Discrimination Act, and the Equal Opportunity Standards. Assist the Principal and Deputies in promoting staff and students to be nominated or apply for scholarships and awards. Works with Teaching staff to ensure the safe learning environment for our student both on and off campus. 6.3 Innovation and Change: The Vice Principal shall assist the Principal in leading innovation and change in the College s quest to ongoing school improvement. This will require leaders to work with others to produce and implement clear, evidence-based learning improvement plans and policies for the development of the College and its facilities. A crucial part of this role is leading and managing innovation and change to ensure the vision and strategic plan is put into action across the College, and that the goals are realised. Clearly understand the vision for the College and adopt it as part of daily practices, the development of policies and procedures, and when working with teams to implement improvement strategies. Develop, implement and evaluate pedagogical improvement strategies, including teacher mentoring and coaching programmes, which maximise the opportunities for the engagement and challenge of students, whilst maximising possible achievement. Undertake school effectiveness research in order to promote and sustain school improvement, ensuring the development of appropriate quality assurance and review strategies. Motivate and work with others to foster creativity, innovation and the use of appropriate technologies in order to achieve excellence. For example, the promotion of Leading Lights etc. Lead and facilitate innovation and change through teams. Use project management to foster both efficiency and effectiveness in the achievement of College goals. Take a strategic role in the development and implementation of new and emerging technologies to enhance and extend teaching and learning experiences, in collaboration with the Director of Learning Technologies. Demonstrate a personal commitment to continuous improvement using problem solving, creative thinking and when assisting with the strategic planning process. Promote student involvement in decision-making processes and engagement through the provision of opportunities to enhance Catholic values. 6.4 Stewardship Stewardship involves policy development, the provision, use and maintenance of the human, physical and financial resources of the school and appropriate processes to monitor, review, report and provide accountability to the Principal and therefore, to government bodies. Stewardship requires the responsible management of resources so as to add value to the Catholic education provided; to take account of equity and diversity and to be open, transparent and accountable to public scrutiny. Exercise effective, principled and ethical leadership following the Catholic model of servant leadership. Build a sharing organisational culture that focuses energies and talents on achieving high quality outcomes for students. Demonstrate proactive leadership and a managerial aptitude in a range of situations.

7 Provide effective planning, allocation, support and evaluation of work undertaken by others, ensuring clear delegation of and accountability for tasks and responsibilities. Develop and maintain effective strategies and procedures for staff appointment, induction, professional learning, and performance review. Review, evaluate and support staff, providing access to coaching and mentoring to achieve high standards. Manage the professional development and learning of self and team members. Manage administrative and operational systems and resources, including financial and physical resources, effectively and ethically. Represent and promote College programs positively and effectively within and outside the College. Specific Responsibilities: Responsibility for the day-to-day organization of the College, including overseeing the management of Secondary Teacher Reliefs administered by the personnel associated with the task, and teacher responsibilities for ensuring accurate student attendance. Manage the approval process for extra and co-curricular activities, Manage the approval process for short-term leave requests from secondary teachers and support the process with the Head of Primary for primary teachers. Oversee the development of the College timetable and calendar of events with the relevant members of the College Leadership team and other stakeholders, such as the Secondary Timetabling Committee. Demonstrate effective and equitable human resource management practices, in line with legislative requirements, which reference College and CEWA standards, ensuring staff have access to appropriate professional development and performance management, that change is managed strategically, and that staff welfare is taken into consideration. Coordinate and implement effective whole staff meeting structures and practices. Support the College Principal Assistant for the editing and update of the College Handbook for Staff and other associated publications. Assist the appropriate personnel in preparing submissions for funding from State and Federal Governments, or other organisations. Assist the Business Manager in the maintenance of inventories of resources as defined by College procedures. Liaise with the Director of Learning Technologies to provide access to information and learning modules in the form of applications, websites and other online resources and materials. Liaise with the Head of Information Services on the purchase of suitable resources, including electronic resources. Oversee the planning, organisation and running of excursions and co-curricular activities, and tours. Assist the Principal with the implementation and review of emergency evacuation procedures, occupational health and safety practices, risk assessments of excursions and tours, and other work place safety procedures. Liaise with the College Leadership Team, in particular the Business Manager, to ensure the appropriate maintenance of College facilities is undertaken, and the necessary classroom furniture and fittings are in place. Develop and implement position descriptions for teachers and other staff connected to learning. Assist the Principal in the recruitment and appointment process of staff, including the preparation of contracts. Assist the Principal and Head of Primary in the enrolment process and the effective transition of new students. Liaise with the Community Relations Department in order to coordinate College Open Days and Tours. 6.5 Community Focus All members of the College Leadership Team demonstrate the ability to foster safe, purposeful and inclusive learning environments and help build a culture of high

8 expectations that takes account of the richness and diversity of the school s wider community. In developing and maintaining positive relationships with students, families, carers and parish communities, we create an ethos of mutual respect taking account of the spiritual, faith, intellectual, cultural, moral, social, health and wellbeing of students. As a College we promote sound lifelong learning from early childhood to late adolescence, and adulthood beyond the College community. We also promote an inclusive environment catering for the needs of all students, responsive to Catholic social teachings, including the Common Good, subsidiarity, solidarity and participation, all in the spirit of reconciliation, acknowledging the richness of a multicultural community. Provide a climate conducive to professional discourse with others, thereby assisting the Principal in encouraging a whole College approach to teaching and learning. Encourage or demonstrate effective communication within and beyond the College community, including keeping staff informed about relevant decisions and issues. Develop a sense of coherence and collegiality. Promote active involvement of parents and the community in the learning process. Demonstrate effective decision-making as appropriate to the situation and circumstance Oversee the work of relevant support staff. Work effectively and proactively with the College Leadership team, assisting the Principal in the development of Strategic Goals. Build alliances and networks with professional communities beyond the College community. Specific responsibilities: Ensure teachers are aware and actively support a high standard of professionalism. This shall include awareness of the Western Australian Professional Standards for Teaching as defined by the WA Teacher Registration Board (TRB) and the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) standards for teachers. Oversee the timetable and management of all team meetings. Support the Director of Ministry/Head of Primary to ensure all special College liturgies, Masses and events are effectively managed, communicated, implemented and evaluated. This includes ensuring regular attendance at these types of events. Support Coordinate all College Whole School Assemblies. Engage with families and carers, and partner, where appropriate, with community groups, agencies and individuals, businesses or other organisations to enhance and enrich the College and its value to the wider community, with the assistance of the Community Relations Department Assist the Director of Ministry with the setting of agendas and organisation of the Parish Community Meetings. Attend College functions, as required by the Principal, including promoting College activities at the Parents of Friends meetings, and ensuring members of the College Leadership Team are represented at all College events and activities. Be aware of behavioural issues and monitor appropriate action in support of College Policies involving the management of student behaviour. Co-operate and work with relevant agencies to protect and support children. Be responsible for and manage staff professional development opportunities and support those responsible with the organization of the necessary Accreditation inservices, the recording of qualifications, including the registration of teachers, Working with Children and Accreditation qualifications, and implement systems that require staff to share information gleaned from professional development opportunities.

9 Attending CEWA Network Meetings is vital, as well as active participation in relevant Professional Associations, as is encouraging other staff to do so.
