1 . UK MEDICAL SCHOOL GUIDE FOR 2014/15 ENTRY AUGUST 2014 Medical School entry in the UK is increasingly competitive. There are many things worth considering however they are in many different sources. Here Raymond Diallo, a second year medical student at the University of Nottingham has compiled some thoughts and his reflections when he was applying. 3 SECTION ONE COURSE COMPARISON TABLES TRADITIONAL COURSES Traditional courses Pros Cons - Lot of contact time - Constant learning is not encouraged, you - Guided learning can put it off until the exams - Clear learning objectives - Learning this way is very repetitive - All core knowledge is acquired prior to clinical phase when most patient contact - There is hardly any patient contact in the first 3 years takes place - Basic clinical skills (listening, - Strong underpinning of scientific principles communication, teamwork etc.) not - Teaching is structured practiced in the first 3 years - All students get the same information - Critical thinking is not encouraged as - Information presented by lecturers can students are spoon-fed provide greater understanding of the topic - Subject-based teaching makes it harder to - Subject-based teaching may be more familiar to most students (anatomy, physiology, pharmacology etc. all taught separately) connect the dots and find cohesion in the material List of medical schools providing traditional courses: Belfast, Cambridge, Imperial, Oxford, St Andrew s. PROBLEM BASED LEARNING COURSES Problem-based learning courses Pros - Improves communication skills - Encourages teamwork which is essential in any GP or hospital setting - Debates and discussions can greatly improve learning by providing different vantage points - Prepares for life-long learning - Equips students to deal with never before seen situations - Better for students who prefer independent learning as opposed to being spoon-fed - Helps develop clinical reasoning - Promotes integration between different subjects and areas - Peer pressure might encourage constant learning - Helps develop critical thinking - May lead to higher levels of comprehension because the emphasis is on deep learning, information processing and retention - Increases transferability of skills - Teaches to respect views and opinion different from our own - Gives insight into real clinical cases Cons - Might not provide as much lexical/core knowledge - Self-directed learning can be more timeconsuming - Self-directed learning requires more commitment and dedication - Learning outcome is very dependent on group dynamic and the contribution of others - Requires huge adaption (from memorisation to self-directed learning) - Relevant information may be missed out of the curriculum or group discussions - Research shows that PBL is more stressful for students List of medical schools providing PBL courses: East Anglia, Glasgow, Hull & York, Keele, Lancaster, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Peninsula.
4 INTEGRATED COURSES Integrated courses Pros Cons - Lectures, small group teaching and PBL sessions are integrated with clinical - Students often face patients before they feel ready attachments from the start - There are lectures even the last year - System-based teaching is used (e.g. anatomy, physiology, pathology and pharmacology of the cardiovascular system) - - Makes it easier to connect the dots and find cohesion in the material - Lectures provide core knowledge and focus on the science underpinning medicine - Seminars, tutorials and workshops encourage critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork - Practicals and clinical attachments teach basic skills early on and also improve communication, listening and recording skills - Recommended by the General Medical Council List of medical schools providing integrated courses: Aberdeen, Barts, Birmingham, Brighton & Sussex, Bristol, Cardiff, Dundee, Durham, Edinburgh, King s, Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield, Southampton, St George s, Swansea, UCL, Warwick.
