1 DEPUTY PRINCIPAL ROLE OUTLINE AND APPOINTMENT 1. Deputy Principal Remits Deputy Principals will be appointed with remits defined by the Principal. The proposal is for there to be four Deputy Principals from August 2006 with the following delegated strategic remits: - Academic Operations - Research and Knowledge Transfer - Learning and Teaching - Strategy and Resources See Appendix 1 for details of responsibilities within these remits. A Senior Deputy Principal shall be appointed by the Court from within this group. In addition to the duties associated with her/his substantive portfolio as a Deputy Principal, the Senior Deputy Principal assumes full delegated responsibility in the absence of the Principal from the University for a period of more than one week. The Senior Deputy Principal is Deputy Chair of Policy, Planning and Resources Committee and the Senior Executive Team. He/she may also assume other duties as specified by the Principal. 2. Strategic Academic Leadership The Deputy Principals are key members of the University's senior executive team. In conjunction with the Principal and Senior Administrative Officers of the University they ensure the development of the University's strategic plan and its effective implementation, and the effective resourcing, leadership and management of all aspects of the University's work. The Deputy Principals deputise for the Principal as required and represent the University with a wide range of external stakeholders and organisations. They advise and assist the Principal on any matters associated with the University. The Deputy Principals provide institutional strategic leadership in academic and other organisational matters falling within their remit. They establish appropriate monitoring and reporting mechanisms and action plans to ensure organisational performance against strategic objectives in their areas of responsibility. 3. Appointment In order to ensure that academic experience is reflected in the strategic aims and senior leadership of the University, Deputy Principals will be appointed from the Professoriate of the University, normally from those who hold or have held departmental headships or other senior academic leadership roles within this or other universities.

2 The role of Deputy Principal is normally carried out on an 80% time commitment basis, with 20% of time reserved for departmental activities, including research. Initial appointment to the role will normally be for a period of four years. This may be extended at the end of the initial period for further defined periods as agreed between the Deputy Principal and Principal. The role of Deputy Principal is normally a secondary appointment, and therefore not subject to the terms of Statute 17. Deputy Principal positions will normally be advertised within the University not less than one semester prior to the position becoming vacant. The post will normally be filled internally, following interview. See Appendix 2 for further details of the appointing panel and considerations. Deputy Principals report directly to the Principal. 4. Deputy Principal Allowance An annual, non-superannuable honorarium will attach to the Deputy Principals and Senior Deputy Principal posts, paid monthly with salary. During periods of extended absence, the honorarium will transfer to an Acting Deputy Principal, if appointed by the Principal. 5. Research Leave On completion of two periods of appointment totalling not less than six years, Deputy Principals will be entitled to apply for research leave of up to 15 months. It is expected that Deputy Principals will normally remain research active throughout their period(s) of appointment. 6. Demitting Office A Deputy Principal may request during a period of appointment to demit office, with not less than six months notice; this will be subject to approval by the Principal. The Principal also reserves the right to request that a Deputy Principal demit office with or without a period of notice. Where this occurs, the Principal shall also have the right to appoint an Acting Deputy Principal pending a formal appointment process. 2

3 DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (ACADEMIC OPERATIONS) To oversee implementation of the University s strategic objectives and departmental plans at the academic departmental level. To act as line manager and appraiser for academic Heads of Department. To offer advice and support to academic Heads of Department. To develop with HR Services a programme of induction and ongoing staff development for academic Heads of Department. To lead with HR Services on policy development with respect to academic staffing issues (probation, promotion, etc.) and to liaise as required with HR Services on operational staffing issues at the academic departmental level (e.g. out of cycle promotions, honorary academic appointments, Head of Department appointments). 4 DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER) Senior academic leadership of the development of strategies and policies for research and knowledge transfer, and oversight of their implementation. Leading the preparation of submissions to the periodic Research Assessment Exercise and other evaluations and assessment of research quality. Postgraduate research student matters. 7 Appendix 2 Appointment 1. The appointing panel will normally comprise: - Chair of Court or her/his nominee (a lay member) - The Principal - A Deputy Principal - The University Secretary or nominee - An Academic Head of Department 2. The criteria for appointment will include a requirement to demonstrate academic achievement and academic leadership and management experience appropriate to the role. 3. Applicants will also be required to demonstrate commitment to participating in appropriate Leadership and Management Training and Development opportunities as identified and jointly agreed between them and the Principal.
