1 POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS FOR RESEARCH ON THE HUMAN ECONOMY UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA We invite applications from suitably-qualified researchers for Post-Doctoral Fellowships in an interdisciplinary programme on the Human Economy which was launched in January See our website, (especially About Human Economy), for more information about the program s scope and achievements so far. The programme is supported by the University of Pretoria and the Mellon Foundation. The working assumptions of the human economy programme include: The need for a pragmatic economics that people can understand and use An emphasis on economy as being made and remade by human beings themselves Analytical abstraction to be combined with a focus on concrete institutional arrangements A more holistic conception of people s needs and interests than is offered by economics We must extend our reach to address all of humanity and the world society we are making Scholars who have undertaken relevant research with an economic dimension in Sociology, History, Economics, Anthropology, Development Studies, Geography and Philosophy are welcome to apply. There are no restrictions on where this research has been done; but there is an expectation that fellows will develop an active interest in Southern Africa at some stage. We wish to promote researchers from the global South, especially Africans, with a view to enriching the North-South dialogue concerning humanity s predicament and future. In two years we have appointed 15 postdocs from around the world, divided equally between the South and the North, and recently 8 African doctoral students in a number of disciplines. We are able now to award 3-4 Fellowships to begin in the first quarter of The deadline for applications is 12 th December The Co-directors will be able to give applicants an answer within a week of that date in order to launch the formalities for entering South Africa quickly. Successful applicants will have Completed a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline within the past seven years Undertaken in-depth and high-quality research on a topic relevant to the project Fellowships are for one year with the possibility of renewal for a further year, depending on progress. Fellows will be expected to write up and publish their existing research and to undertake additional research wherever and on whatever topic are agreed with the Co-directors. Successful applicants will also be expected to Publish material while attached to the University of Pretoria Develop further research and publications on the human economy

2 Participate in conferences, workshops and seminars on the human economy hosted by the programme Contribute to an annual collection in Berghahn s Human Economy series of publications (first volume out in 2013) Provide guidance to postgraduate students undertaking research on topics linked to their interests. Fellows will receive A tax-free stipend of up to R per annum Up to R travel allowance for a return air ticket between country of residence and South Africa Limited funding for research in southern Africa Funding to attend one international conference outside South Africa during their tenure Access to the facilities of the University of Pretoria, including office space.
