5 VISUAL ARTS AND MUSEUMS African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) Founded in 1976, the AAMP is the first institution funded and built by a major municipality to preserve, interpret and exhibit the heritage of African Americans. The AAMP houses four galleries, each of which offers exhibitions anchored by three themes: the African Diaspora, the Philadelphia Story, and the Contemporary Narrative. Barnes Foundation Established by Albert C. Barnes in 1922 to "promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts", the Barnes Foundation is home to one of the world's largest collections of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and early Modern paintings, with extensive holdings by Picasso, Matisse, Cézanne, Renoir and Modigliani, as well as important examples of African sculpture. 6 Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Pennsylvania Founded in 1887, University of Pennsylvania s Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology has conducted more than 400 archaeological and anthropological expeditions around the world. Its galleries feature materials from Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Bible Lands, Mesoamerica, Asia and the ancient Mediterranean World, as well as artifacts from native peoples of the Americas, Africa and Polynesia. Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) PAFA's museum is known for its collections of 19th- and 20th-century American paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Location: N. Philadelphia Museum of Art The Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) is one of the world s greatest art institutions. The museum, founded over 125 years ago, houses over 225,000 works of art encompassing some of the greatest achievements of human creativity. Rodin Museum The Rodin Museum, which opened to the public in 1929, houses 124 sculptures, including bronze casts of the artist's greatest works: The Thinker, The Burghers of Calais, Eternal Springtime, and The Gates of Hell. The museum also includes Rodin s plaster studies, drawings and prints. The restoration and conversion of many historic industrial structures into living spaces in the 1980 s and 90 s coincided with an influx of art galleries, design firms, architects and performance groups. ACRL attendees will have the opportunity to attend First Friday, a monthly open house for arts groups in Old City to showcase their works. Website: first-friday/ South Street Considered one of Philadelphia's liveliest and eclectic streets, South Street has a lively mix of shops, restaurants and galleries. Website: University City With its funky vibe and unique spirit, University City is one of Philadelphia's most vibrant and diverse neighborhoods with its galleries, restaurants and shops. Website: s/museums-and-galleries/ Manayunk Manayunk is a unique shopping and dining destination with numerous boutiques, restaurants and galleries. Website: ARCHITECTURE Center City District City Hall Topped by a 37-foot bronze statue of William Penn above a 548-foot tower, City Hall was Philadelphia s tallest building until Today, with 642 rooms, it functions as the largest and most elaborate city hall in the country as well as the tallest masonry-bearing building in the world. Exhibits of the tower and observation deck are open to the public. It contains a vast museum collection of artwork and furnishings as well as a premier research library. Location: 1 N. 8 Fairmount Park Eastern State Penitentiary Operational from 1829 until 1971, Eastern State Penitentiary was known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, and is now a National Historic Landmark. Location: 22nd St. and Fairmount Ave. Neighborhood: Fairmount Park Distance from Convention Center: 1.5 miles Transportation: SEPTA Bus No. 48 to 22nd and Fairmount Hours: 10-5 every day Admission: $12 Website: Phone: Cedar Grove Administered by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Cedar Grove was moved from its original site in the Frankford section of Philadelphia to Fairmount Park in the late 1920 s. It features unusual two-sided closets and many of the family s original furnishings. Location: Lansdowne Drive off North Concourse Drive, West Fairmount Park Neighborhood: Fairmount Park Distance from Convention Center: 3.5 miles Transportation: SEPTA Bus No. 38 to 41st Street and Parkside Avenue Hours: Tuesday-Sunday 10-5 Admission: $5 Website: Phone: Laurel Hill Cemetery One of the few cemeteries in the United States designated a National Historic Landmark, this 78 acre burial ground for prominent Philadelphians, national war heroes, Titanic passengers, and other individuals also functions as an outdoor sculpture garden, horticultural marvel, and truly unique historical resource. Location: 3822 Ridge Ave. Neighborhood: Fairmount Park Distance from Convention Center: 5 miles Transportation: SEPTA Bus No. 61 to Ridge Ave & 35th, or Regional Rail (Roxborough/ Manayunk bound) to East Falls Station Hours: Monday-Friday 8-4:30, Saturday-Sunday 9:30-4:30 Admission: Free Website: Phone: Mount Pleasant Built in 1761, Mount Pleasant stands as one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in the country. Administered by The Philadelphia Museum of Art, this elegant country estate does not contain period room furnishings so that visitors can experience the architectural elements and craftsmanship of the structure. Location: Mount Pleasant Drive, East Fairmount Park Neighborhood: Fairmount Park Distance from Convention Center: 3.3 miles Transportation: SEPTA Bus Nos. 32 or 48 towards Roxborough or North Philadelphia Hours: Tuesday-Sunday 10-5 Admission: $5 Website: Phone: Woodford Administered by the Naomi Wood Trust, this elegant Georgian-style house was built as a summer retreat in by William Coleman, a Philadelphia merchant and close friend of Benjamin Franklin. 9 Old City District Betsy Ross House Legendary home and burial place of Betsy Ross ( ), the Philadelphia seamstress who is believed to have made the first American flag, this historic house commemorates the life and accomplishments of a Philadelphia patriot. Note: The house is not accessible to people with disabilities. Location: 239 Arch St. Distance from Convention Center: 1.1 miles (Market/Frankford) subway to Penn s Landing Hours: Tuesday-Sunday 10-5 Admission: $3 Website: Phone: Christ Church and Burial Ground Founded in 1695, Christ Church was the first parish of the Church of England (Anglican) in Pennsylvania and was where the American Episcopal Church was born. The current church, completed in 1754, is a fine example of Georgian architecture and was the building in which famous Revolutionary leaders including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Betsy Ross, and Robert Morris worshipped. The block features 32 Colonial- and Federal- style homes, with two open to the public for tours. Location: Front and 2nd Streets Distance from Convention Center: 1.2 miles (Market/Frankford) subway to Penn s Landing Hours: Friday-Saturday 10-5, Sunday 12-5 Admission: Self-guided tour $3; Guided tour $5 Website: Phone: Franklin Court Franklin Court was the site of Benjamin Franklin s home, built between Franklin died in 1790, and the house was demolished 20 years later. Today, the site features a steel ghost structure outlining where Franklin s house stood. Franklin Court also includes an underground museum and an 18th century printing office. 10 Physick House Built in 1786, this building is one of two remaining freestanding townhouses from the Federal era in this neighborhood of Philadelphia. It functioned as the 19th century home of Dr. Philip Syng Physick, the Father of American Surgery in the days before anesthesia. Location: 321 S. 3rd St. Distance from Convention Center: 1.5 miles (Market/Frankford) subway to Penn s Landing Hours: Thursday-Saturday 12-4, Sunday 1-4 Admission: $5 Website: Phone: Powel House Built in 1765, this elegant, Colonial- and Georgian-style brick mansion was purchased in 1769 by Samuel Powel, the last mayor of Philadelphia under the Crown and the first Patriot Mayor of the city after the creation of the new American republic. It includes a decorative arts collection and walled garden. Location: 244 S. 3rd St. Distance from Convention Center: 1.4 miles (Market/Frankford) subway to Penn s Landing Hours: Reopening March 3, 2011 Admission: $5 Website: Phone: Second Bank of the U.S. Designed by William Strickland, this building is one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the country. The portrait gallery in the Second Bank Building includes 185 paintings of Colonial and Federal leaders. Location: 420 Chestnut St. (Market/Frankford) subway to 5th Street Station Hours: Wednesday-Sunday 10-3 Website: Phone: University City & Southwest Philadelphia Fisher Fine Arts Library, University of Pennsylvania Renowned Philadelphia architect Frank Furness completed this masterful Victorian structure in 1890, and was intended to be the University s primary library after its move to West Philadelphia. 12 THEATRE Academy of Music Working in conjunction with the Academy of Music, The Kimmel Center is Philadelphia's home for large-scale performing arts productions, from theatre to music. 13 MUSIC Art After 5 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art As part of the Philadelphia Museum s Art After 5 Program, Friday evenings at the Museum feature live music in the Great Stair Hall. The music program primarily features international and jazz genres. Website: Phone: Chris Jazz Cafe A Philadelphia jazz institution, Chris Jazz Cafe is home to live music six nights per week. The intimate setting and range from local to wellestablished acts makes the venue a popular spot for jazz aficionados and nightlife seekers alike. PCMS is presenting two concerts during ACRL, including Belcea Quartet and Hyunah Yu with Randall Scarlata and Ken Noda. Location: Various venues Admission: $23 Website: Phone: Philadelphia Orchestra Founded in 1900, The Philadelphia Orchestra has distinguished itself as one of the leading orchestras in the world through over a century of acclaimed performances, historic international tours [and] best-selling recordings. During ACRL the Philadelphia Orchestra will be presenting Truly Classical, with works by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Location: 260 S.
