The newest information The information I am about to share with you is the latest information that we have on our Science sequence plans for next year. It is still early in the year and we are carefully considering any changes that we intend to make. Once we are sure of how we are going to proceed, an will be sent home with the details.
Graduation Requirements To graduate from our high school the students are required to pass 3 years (15 credits) of science. At this point, we are planning on moving to a Biology, Chemistry, Physics sequence starting in September of 2017.
So what level Biology should my child take? We are still looking at the best way to approach this, but there is data to suggest that a proficiency in English will help a student with Biology. We may also likely look at other data for placement guidance. Here is the pattern that we are likely to ask the Guidance Counselors to follow:
621 Biology (CP) (5 Credits) Minimum English requirement: English I (CP) (211)
622 Biology (Adv) (5 credits) Recommended English Level: English I (Adv) (212)
623 Biology (H/Wt) (5 Credits - Weighted) Recommended English Level: English I (H/Wt) (213)
AP Biology Classes Students interested in taking Advanced Placement (college level) Biology, starting in their Sophomore year will be allowed to enroll in 629 AP Biology (H/Wt.) (AP/Wt.) This would be taken in accordance with any pre or co-requisites, in addition to a Chemistry class (sophomore year), a Physics class (junior year), or by itself or with other science electives (senior year).
Science in 10th, 11th, and 12th Grade 10th Grade will be Chemistry (CP, Advanced, or Honors) Students may additionally take AP Biology. 11th Grade will be Physics (CP, Advanced, or Honors) Students may additionally take AP Chemistry AP Environmental Science or AP Biology. 12th Grade the student may take any Science AP course, in addition, they may like to take a Science elective or two, like: Human Anatomy and Physiology, Astronomy, Forensic Science, AP Environmental Science, Organic Chemistry, Zoology or Behavioral Ecology.
Thank You for your Time! Please remember that this information is tentative at the moment. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me: Richard W. Shevalier III Science Department Supervisor
