6 Th Alternating Block Schedule 4x4 Alternating Block Four 90 min classes on A days (classes 1-4) Four 90 min classes on B days (classes 5-8) Opportunity for 8 credits each year Fine Arts and Elective classes throughout the day Some classes are double blocked, meaning they meet 90 minutes each day at the same period.

8 Course Selection Process Overview DATE December 13 January January 12 January 17 February 28 late Spring June 15 EVENT Parent Meeting for incoming 9 th graders Course choice sheets and Course Catalog available Cavalier Showcase LTHS 6:30 pm HS Counselors hold individual parent meetings at Middle School campuses Course Verification sheets mailed home Deadline to change course requests Each year students are registered individually and given ample opportunities to make scheduling choices and changes.

9 Overview of course selection process Course selection is a January to May process. Our process involves the student, parents, and the Counselor working together. There are two components of the course selection process: 1. Drafting a four year plan. 2. Selecting courses each student will take next year as a 9 th grader.

10 Graduation Plans The State of Texas sets graduation requirements for high school students by developing state adopted graduation plans which include required and elective coursework. All LTHS student 4 year plans will include the necessary required courses to complete a state adopted graduation plan plus any local requirements. The Class of 2021 will graduate under House Bill 5 requirements called the Foundations High School Plan with an Endorsement.

11 General Overview The Foundation High School Program provides two graduation plans: FHSP with an Endorsement FHSP with and Endorsement and a Distinguished Level of Achievement

15 What is a 4-year plan? A four year plan is a map to guide a student s academic journey through high school. A four year plan is a flexible document. Review and adjust each year. It helps ensure that students have taken the courses necessary for graduation. It helps students prepare for future college admissions and career pathways. It helps students plan time so they can take the classes that are required, and still have time to take some classes for fun and exploration.

18 Selecting Courses for 9 th grade Students will select 8 courses: ENGLISH: English 1 or English 1 Pre AP MATH: Algebra 1, Geometry Pre AP SCIENCE: Biology or Biology Pre AP SOCIAL STUDIES: World Geo or AP Human Geography FOREIGN LANGUAGE: Spanish, French, Latin, ASL or Chinese PE/ATHLETICS/ELECTIVES: Based on student goals and interests.

19 Pre-Advanced Placement & Advanced Placement (AP) courses Students may choose to take advanced classes as appropriate to their interests and academic strengths Pre-AP courses are open enrollment and are designed to prepare students to be successful in AP classes The AP program offers students an opportunity to take college level courses in high school and earn potential college credit.

20 Pre-Advanced Placement & Advanced Placement (AP) courses The number of Pre-AP or AP courses a student can take will vary with each student s motivation, self-discipline, and available time outside of class Recommended pre-requisites include: 1. A grade of 85 or higher in a related academic content course 2. Scores at the commended level on the most recent corresponding STAAR exams

21 Characteristics of a Successful Pre-AP/AP Student: Excellent study and organizational skills Strong interpersonal skills Persistence in pursuing goals A strong sense of responsibility The ability to become an independent learner A desire to be academically successful Proficient oral and written communication skills

22 GPA Policy A Transcript is an official Academic Achievement Record (AAR) On each LTHS transcript, two Grade Point Averages are indicated: 100 scale Weighted GPA extra GPA points are calculated here. Not indicated in course grade. 4.0 scale Un-weighted GPA - A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1

23 GPA Policy Multiplier rule for Weighted classes in GPA: Un-weighted course grades multiplied by 1.0 Weighted, Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) & Honors course grades multiplied by 1.1 Weighted, AP & Advanced Honors course grades multiplied by 1.2 All students shall be required to take a minimum of four un-weighted credits during high school to be used in the calculation for class rank and the top ten percent. A student shall complete three of the four required un-weighted credits prior to the beginning of his or her senior year.
