2 Education The KEY to the Future A college graduate will have average lifetime earnings twice that of a high school graduate.

4 LEVELS OF COURSES REGULAR These courses are taught at grade level and follow the Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) elements. PRE-AP These courses are beyond honors level and require extra effort. Students should be capable of making A s or high B s in regular classes to be successful in Pre-AP. PRE-IB Pre-International Baccalaureate courses are for students interested in continuing on in the HS IB program. TAG Students must qualify for the Gifted & Talented program to enroll in TAG courses. They must have documentation of previous participation in a program or qualify through testing.

5 Pre-AP vs. Pre-IB Pre AP More in line with a traditional college class (lecture centered, instructor driven) Requires more detailed content knowledge Requires more reading by the student Example: Delineate the features contained in the Declaration of Independence and their effect on the colonies. Pre IB Student centered; Inquiry based learning; Independent research The expectation is that the student will independently gather and study information Example: Why would the Declaration of Independence be considered liberal document as opposed to the Constitution that would be considered a conservative document?

6 Pre-AP/IB and TAG * Taking Pre-AP/IB courses give college readiness skills * Taking AP/IB courses will facilitate college entry; sufficient scores on the tests may gain college credit, and placement into advanced courses

7 Middle School English Language Arts Courses * English 6-8 * English Pre-AP/TAG 6-8 * Reading 6-7 * Reading 8 (for additional support)

8 Middle School Mathematics Courses * Math 6-8 * Math Pre-AP 6-7 * TAG Math 6-7 Algebra I Pre-AP/TAG (HS credit)

9 Middle School Science Courses * Science 6-8 * Science Pre-AP 6-8 * TAG Science 6-7 Biology TAG (HS Credit)

11 Middle School Physical Education 4 Semesters (2 years) required EXAMPLE ONLY * 6 th Grade 1 or 2 Semesters of PE * 7 th Grade 1 Semester PE * 8 th Grade 2 Semesters PE * 7/8 Athletics will take the place of a PE

14 Get ahead in Middle School High school credits can be earned now (next slide) Students who earn high school credit in middle school have more flexibility in pursuing higher level courses and elective courses in high school

16 Middle School Career & Technical Education (CTE) COURSES: * All 6 th or 7 th graders interested in learning about Career Pathways should begin their course selections with Exploring Careers *

17 High School (HS) NOTE: Students need to successfully complete a high school course in middle school with a 70 or higher. Students who are taking Algebra and Biology will be required to pass the End of Course exam in order to be awarded credit towards high school graduation. Each semester grade and credit earned will be recorded on the transcript and will be included in the student s grade point average and class rank. If a student fails the state assessments and/or are at-risk of failing a course, they could lose an elective(s) and participate in a mandatory academic recovery program.
