There are a minimum number of performances required per year for successful completion of this course. Instrumental Music PA10 Instrumental Music introduces the principles and techniques for playing musical instruments within a structured ensemble performance environment. Instruments are based on student choices from the string, wind, and percussion families. There are a minimum number of performances required per year for successful completion of this course. Orchestra PA11 Prerequisite: Departmental Recommendation or Instrumental Music This course develops advanced playing skills in the formalized setting of an orchestra. There are a minimum number of performances required per year for successful completion of this course. Music Theory PA13 This course explores music theory from both historical and modern perspectives including a study of the impact of technology on the development of music. Students will learn to write musical notation, terminology and chord progression. Tonal and atonal musical styles are emphasized. Theatre PA14 This course focuses on performance-based development of acting skills. All aspects of the theatre are emphasized and there are a minimum number of performances required per year for successful completion of this course. 54

Language Arts is integrated with the study of social science through intensive writing, speaking, and visual mapping. ILASS English II: Integrated Language Arts and Social Sciences: Migration, Movement & Expansion PE20 Grade 10 Prerequisite: ILASS 1 This course examines the impact of conflict and the development of rights and freedoms from the perspective of both the United States, and other nations past, present, and future. Language arts is integrated with the study of social science through writing, speaking, and visual mapping. PMSA - English ILASS English III: Integrated Language Arts and Social Sciences: Conflict, Rights & Freedom PE33 Grade 11 Prerequisite: ILASS I, ILASS II This course examines the impact of conflict and the development of rights and freedoms from the perspective of both the United States and other nations past, present, and future. Language arts is integrated with the study of social science through writing, speaking, and visual mapping. Great Books Seminar PE30 Grades 12 Semester course 1.0 credit This course examines seminal works of literature from a cross- section of world authors both past and present. This seminar can be repeated as the authors of study change on a yearly basis. Young Authors Seminar PE31 Grade 12 Semester course 1.0 credit This course develops the fictional, non-fictional, and technical writing skills of students. Using an immersion approach, students are expected to write, reflect, and revise pieces of writing that are of personal or professional interest. 55

4 Nature of Knowledge PG34 Grade 12 Semester course 1.0 credit Prerequisite: 22 on ACT English and Reading, or a passing grade on Triton Compass exam Epistemology is the study of the nature of knowledge examining its presuppositions and foundations. This course examines this branch of philosophy more deeply from both an historical perspective and applying our modern understanding of the physiology of the brain to cognitive development. Completion of Nature of Knowledge students will have the opportunity to earn 6 hours of college credit in Rhetoric 101 and Rhetoric 102. Journalism PE32 Grades 12 Semester course 1.0 credit Prerequisite: ILASS I, ILASS II, ILASS III Journalism is the collecting, writing, editing, and presenting of news or news articles in newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and Internet broadcasts. Students in this course have the responsibility for the Academy News Network, a news outlet distributed in print and broadcast on video and the Internet. PMSA - English 56

Content and processes are designed to be age-appropriate for students at this level. Wellness & Personal Development II PW20 Grade 10 Semester course 0.5 credits-to be taken opposite of Driver Education Prerequisite: Wellness & Personal Development I This course is the second part of a sequence that focuses on all aspects of wellness and personal development, including physical fitness, emotional health, and social maturity. Content and processes are designed to be age-appropriate for students at this level. Wellness & Personal Development III PW30 Grade 11 Prerequisite: Wellness& Personal Development II This course is the third part of a sequence that focuses on all aspects of wellness and personal development, including physical fitness, emotional health, and social maturity. Content and processes are designed to be age-appropriate for students at this level. Wellness & Personal Development IV PW40 Grade 12 Prerequisite: Wellness& Personal Development III This course is the final part of a sequence that focuses on all aspects of wellness and personal development, including physical fitness, emotional health, and social maturity. Content and processes are designed to be age-appropriate for students at this level. Driver Education in the Classroom PW21 Grades Semester course credits to be taken opposite of Wellness &Personal Development II Prerequisite: Wellness I, must pass 8 classes in previous 2 semesters The Driver Education program, consisting of two phases of instruction, classroom and behind-the-wheel (optional), is designed to develop safe, courteous, and skillful drivers. To enter the driver education program, students must have completed freshman physical education and maintained a 90% attendance rate during the school year prior to taking this course. The classroom phase emphasizes the importance of students developing desirable attitudes toward the responsibilities associated with the operation of a motor vehicle. At the end of this course, students receive their permit, which must be held three (3) months before they can be issued a license. NOTE: This course meets the driver education requirement for graduation. PMSA - Wellness and Personal Development 57

6 PMSA - Wellness and Personal Development Driver Education Behind-the-Wheel Grades Prerequisite: 15 years of age, classroom instruction, Driving Permit Behind-the-Wheel instruction is an optional course, offered for 6 hours. Instruction is made available to students, but it is not required for graduation. The permit allows the students to begin the required 50 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with their parents and the 6-hour behind-the-wheel school phase either before or after school, during the school day (if class schedule permits), or during the summer. Proviso is a member of the Cooperative Driving Testing Program. Our students who show a proficiency in the classroom and behind-the-wheel phases (minimum of grade B) may earn the opportunity to take their actual road test with their instructor. Students who achieve this level of excellence will receive a certificate of completion entitling them to receive their license without any further testing. Fees: $ user fee payable to Proviso Township High Schools, a $20.00 application fee for permit payable to the Secretary of State, and a $15.00 workbook fee are required. Credit: Students do not receive credit for Driver Education, since the grade is part of the Physical Education grade. 58

It is for students with above average ability and genuine interest in mathematics. It uses an in-depth study approach and makes it possible for students to prepare for and complete Calculus while in high school. Geometry, PM21 Grades 9 & 10 only Prerequisite: Algebra Honors or department recommendation This course covers all of the same topics outlined for Geometry but in greater depth and breadth. Additional geometric concepts are covered as well. Student projects and in-depth investigations of special topics will be assigned. It is for students with above average ability and genuine interest in mathematics. This course helps provide the foundation necessary for success in Advanced Placement classes. This course continues and expands on topics introduced in Algebra I. PMSA - Mathematics Advanced Algebra, PM12 Grades 10 & 11 Year Course- 1.0 credit Prerequisite: Algebra Algebra and Trigonometry are foundational to future study in mathematics. Topics include number systems, equations and inequalities, systems of equations and inequalities, polynomials, rational and irrational numbers and other advanced concepts. Trigonometric topics include right triangle relationships, the unit circle, and beyond. Pre-Calculus PM13 Grades 11, 12 Prerequisite: Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra This course is intended for the college-bound student who is preparing for Calculus. Instruction emphasizes the study of applications of mathematics with enhanced use of graphics calculators. This course offers an in-depth study of the following topics: functions and graphs, functions and their zeros, polynomial functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, applications of trigonometry, parametric equations and polar coordinates, matrices and systems of equations and inequalities, sequences and series, and probability and statistics. 59

8 Calculus PM30 Grades 12 Prerequisite: Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, and Pre-Calculus This course develops concepts related to differential and integral calculus. Both have mathematical and physical importance, and as such, particular emphasis is placed on both theory and application using an inquiry-based approach. Computer Science I PM20 Grade Year course - 1 credit Prerequisite: Junior or Senior level standing This course introduces students to programming methodology, algorithms, and data structures using advanced programming languages. Emphasis is placed on the application of programming techniques to solve problems. Object-oriented and structured approaches are applied. Computer Science II PM21 Grades 12 Year course 1 credit Prerequisite: Computer Science I, Department recommendation This course focuses on the development of programming techniques necessary to solve more complex problems. Using data files, high-resolution graphics, and shape tables, students use a modular approach to the development of programs. PMSA - Mathematics Statistics PM31 Grades 11, 12 Prerequisite: Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, Junior or Senior level standing This course provides a foundation of statistical analysis, probability, data analysis, statistical inference, distributions, statistical tests and the principles of regression are topics of study. Particular emphasis is given to applications of these tools and techniques in the areas of science, medicine, business, and the social sciences. 60

9 Science Physics (PS10) X Chemistry (PS20) X Physics Biology (PS30) X Physics, Chemistry Anatomy Physiology (PS31) X Physics, Chemistry, Biology Engineering & Design (PS21) X X Physics, Chemistry, Biology Human Genetics (PS32) X X Physics, Chemistry, Biology Physical Chemistry (PS42) X Physics, Chemistry, Biology Advanced Physics (PS41) X Physics, Chemistry, Biology Physics PS10 Grade 9 Physics is the study of the fundamental behavior of the physical universe on both large and small scales. This course examines topics involving motion, momentum, energy, wave, and particle behavior using principles and strategies of inquiry. Particular emphasis is placed on physics in the modern era, studying the impact of physics and technology on our society, and the application of data analysis strategies and tools to the study of real-world data. Chemistry PS20 Grades 10 Prerequisite: Physics This course is the study of the composition of substances and the changes they undergo. Chemistry Honors emphasizes the strategies and techniques of scientific investigation, problem solving, and critical thinking. This is accomplished through extensive use of demonstrations, classroom discussions, laboratory investigations, textbook materials, and computer assisted instruction. Topics are covered at a faster pace with in-depth quantitative reasoning used as the focus for each topic of study. Independent student projects and scientific investigations are course requirements. Biology PS30 Grade 11 Prerequisite: Physics, Chemistry This course deals with the study of living things and attempts to develop understandings of basic biological principles. Emphasis is placed upon the chemical and physical basis of life, the continuity of life, the fundamental life processes, evolution of life, and the interdependence of living things and the environment. The program will be heavily oriented toward laboratory investigation and critical thinking skills. Students should have above average abilities in reading, science, and critical thinking skills to be enrolled in this course. PMSA - Science Anatomy/Physiology PS31 Grades 12 Prerequisite: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology This course uses body structures of humans and animals to examine the systems necessary for the growth and maintenance of life. Particular emphasis is on the evolutionary sequence of organs, tissues, cells, and functions in order to better understand homology and the role of evolution in the development of life. Engineering & Design PS21 Grades Semester course credits Must take with1 semester of Human Genetics Prerequisite: Physics, Chemistry, Biology This course examines the principles and applications of computer-aided design to solve various problems of design and engineering. Structural design and robotics engineering are two areas of particular emphasis. 61

10 Human Genetics PS32 Grades Semester course credits Must take with 1 semester of Engineering & Design Prerequisite: Physics, Chemistry, Biology This course presents science and society about our species as well as a set of important ethical questions to examine the use of this knowledge wisely. This course analyzes the impact of this project from the perspective of biology, medicine, ethics, and society. Physical Chemistry PS42 Grades 12 Prerequisite: Physics, Chemistry, Biology This course examines chemistry using advanced analysis techniques to understand the interactions between atoms and molecules. Particular emphasis is given to the gas laws, chemical signature identification, and other advanced applications. Advanced Physics PS41 Grades 11, 12 Prerequisite: Physics, Chemistry, Biology This course is designed for students who successfully completed the study of Physics and are interested in further investigation and understanding of the scientific processes and theories designed to provide answers to the questioning mind. Students will have the opportunity to use modern technology which has its basis in physics. The intended outcome of this course is the development of an ability to think in a critical manner using both concrete and abstract examples from physics as models. PMSA - Science 62

11 Research The Research curriculum is designed to provide students with multiple opportunities to pursue areas of study that are of personal interest. This includes, but is not limited to, mentorships in the areas of medicine, physics, chemistry, biology, the arts, languages, mathematics, technology, and business. This placement is dependent upon the availability and interests of both students and mentors. Additionally, students are required to engage in non credit service opportunities that provide students with the ability to give back to the community through volunteer work at the Academy, other District schools, our feeder schools, hospitals, and other organizations. The two tiered graduation system differentiates according to the depth of the research commitment. Students choosing to pursue an area of significant research and committing to produce and defend the work and the product will, pending approval by an Academy Board of Research Review, be awarded Graduation With Distinction honors. Research Core (PR30) X 11th grade standging Research Mentorship (PR40) X Senior standing and must have a 3.0 GPA or above and fill out Mentorship application Research Core PR30 Grade 11 Prerequisite: 11th grade standing Research and inquiry are core tenets of the Academy program. Students will explore ill structured real world programs of their choice using qualitative and quantitative methods. Final assessments will be the presentation of a poster at the annual Research Symposium. Research Mentorship (with Distinction) PR40 Grade 12 Year course 2.5 credits Research and inquiry are central foci of the work at the Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy. Students will work alongside scientists and other professionals to engage in meaningful, real-world efforts. Students may very well engage in research efforts that follow personal interests. The Mentorship Program places student s in the community with doctors, scientist, lawyers, teachers and many other professionals. They will be engaged in authentic world that contributes to the knowledge base. Find assessment will be the public defense at their world at the annual Research Symposium. PMSA - Research 63

This course examines these tenets within the context of modern life with a particular emphasis on urban societies. Eastern Histories Grade Year Course-1.0 credit Prerequisite: 10th grade standing and departmental approval The Asian and Pan Asian portions of the world have a rich history that significantly predates western civilization. This course examines the history of selected areas and nation states using the tools and strategies of modern social science. African Histories Grade Year Course-1.0 Credit Prerequisite: 10th grade standing and departmental approval The nations and peoples of Africa have a rich history that significantly predates western civilization. This course examines the history of selected areas and nation states using the tools and strategies of modern social science. Global Social Foundations Grade Year Course- 1.0 Credit Prerequisite: 10th grade standing and departmental approval Culture is the totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs institutions, and other artifacts of human work and thought. Society is the context in which this culture is manifested. This course examines the foundations of various cultures from a diverse cross section of societies around the world. Philosophical Schools of Thought Grade Year Course- 1.0 Credit Prerequisite: 11th grade standing and departmental approval Philosophy is an investigation of the nature, causes, or principles of reality, knowledge, or values based on logical reasoning rather than on empirical inquiry. French II PF22 Grades Year course - 1 credit Prerequisite: 8th grade placement test or Successful completion of French I This course is designed to improve language skills from French I so that students can use the past, present, and future to converse and present on a variety of cultural topics. Students build larger vocabularies and improve sentence structure by reading stories they will also create original conversations and compositions. Also, they will read culture selections that will improve their conversational and writing skills. PMSA - World Languages French III PF32 Grades Year course 1 credit Prerequisite: Successful completion of French II This course extends student skills in the speaking of French and increases student knowledge of the customs and habits of the people who speak it. Students will participate in group discussions, in readings, and in individual and group projects. A French novel will be read. French IV PF42 Grade Year course 1 credit Prerequisite: Successful completion of French III This course refines student abilities to speak, read, and write French. They will gain greater understanding of the people who are native speakers of French and of the places where French is spoken. Students will read a survey of Francophone literature, including two complete novels. History, geography, vocabulary, grammar, and culture will be integrated into the readings and film study. 67

16 Spanish I PF10 Year course 1 credit This course requires no previous language experience. The course introduces students to Spanish and the people who speak it. Units of work based upon normal conversation used by native speakers of Spanish will help students understand the spoken language. Students practice speaking, reading, and writing Spanish during the first year. Spanish II PF20 Grades Year course 1 credit Prerequisite: 8th grade placement test (for Freshmen, only) or successful completion of Spanish I This course is designed to improve language skills from Spanish I. Students read and discuss short stories and a novel in Spanish. Spanish IV PF40 Grade Year course 1 credit Prerequisite: Recommendation of instructor This course refines student abilities to speak, read, and write in the Spanish language. Students will gain greater understanding of the Spanish-speaking world with an emphasis on Spain through a variety of readings which include literature and culture. Students will have the opportunity to participate in class discussions and oral presentations regarding themes and topics related to readings, investigations about the Spanish- speaking people and their heritage. 68
