3 STAAR EOC STAAR EOC assessments replace TAKS. Current 10 th 12 th grade students must still meet the Exit Level TAKS requirements for graduation. EOC assessments are required for any student enrolled in and completing a high school course that has a related assessment including: students earning credit through correspondence courses, dual credit courses, and AP courses, and students on the Minimum High School Plan. EOC assessments are aligned to the taught curriculum. Measure a higher level of thinking in the content areas Focus is on fewer skills addressed in a deeper manner EOC assessments measure readiness for college and career success. 1/29/2012 3
4 How does STAAR differ from TAKS? TAKS high-school level tests were required by law to test content studied over several years. New STAAR assessments will test material that students study during the tested year. Unless a student is eligible for an accommodation, each student will have 4 hours to complete each assessment. 1/29/2012 4
5 How does STAAR differ from TAKS? Under TAKS, students took two tests in 9 th grade and four tests in both 10 th and 11 th grade. A student was required to pass four exit-level tests given in 11 th grade to meet graduation requirements. Under STAAR, most students will take 12 STAAR End-of-Course assessments. English I, English II, English III Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II Biology, Chemistry, Physics World Geography, World History, U.S. History 1/29/2012 5
6 How does STAAR differ from TAKS? The STAAR EOC assessments will count 15% of a student s final grade in the associated course. In reading, greater emphasis will be given to critical analysis rather than to literal understanding. In writing, students will be required to write two essays instead of one, and EOC assessments will be administered over two days. In science and math, the number of open-ended (griddable questions) will increase. 1/29/2012 6
7 Performance Categories Students must reach at least the minimum score. Level I: Unsatisfactory Academic Performance MINIMUM SCORE Level II: Satisfactory Academic Performance Level III: Advanced Academic Performance 1/29/2012 7
8 Grading Requirement The EOC score will count 15% of the student s final grade in the course. The 15% grading requirement applies to the final course grade as students are earning course credit including: students in grade 8 who are earning high school credit, students who earn credit by semester, students receiving special education services who take the general assessment, students on the Minimum High School Plan, students enrolled in dual credit courses, students enrolled in correspondence courses, and students who repeat a course. The 15% grading requirement does not apply to students taking STAAR Modified or STAAR Alternate. Students who do not have a passing average in the course will need to retake the course. Students who do not meet the minimum standard for the EOC will need to retake the EOC. SUMMER (July 9-July 13) FALL (November and December) 1/29/2012 8
9 Grading Requirement Course credit, including first semester, will not be awarded for courses requiring an EOC exam until receipt of EOC scores. Students may retake an EOC exam at any time according to the testing schedule. If a student retakes an EOC assessment, the District will include the retake score as 15% of the final course grade only if the retake score allows a student to gain credit for the course. 1/29/2012 9

Student B Yes Student receives credit for the course; however, he must retake the EOC because the EOC grade was at the minimum standard. Student C No Student must repeat the course; however, a satisfactory score was received on the EOC and a retake of the EOC is not required. Student D Yes Student receives credit for the course; however, he did not meet the minimum standard on the EOC so he must retake the EOC exam. Student E Yes Student receives credit for the course and scored at the satisfactory level on the EOC. Student has the option to retake the exam to try for an advanced level score. Student F No Student did not pass the course or the EOC. He must repeat the course and retake the EOC exam. 1/29/

Student B Y Student receives credit for the course; however, he must retake both sections of the English EOC because he received the minimum score. Student C Y Student receives credit for the course; however, he must retake the writing section of the English EOC. Student D Y Student receives credit for the course; however, he must retake both sections of the English EOC. Student E N Student must retake the course. He must retake the writing portion of the EOC and must retake the reading portion of the EOC because the minimum score was achieved.
12 Graduation Requirements (Cumulative Score) A cumulative score in English, Math, Science and Social Studies is required for graduation. Examples: English 1 + English II + English III > Cumulative Score Algebra 1 + Geometry + Algebra 2 Cumulative Score Biology + Chemistry + Physics > Cumulative Score World Geography + World History + U.S. History > Cumulative Score 1/29/
13 Graduation Requirements (Cumulative Score) Cumulative Score = # EOCs taken in content area X SAP in the content area (Satisfactory Academic Performance) A student must achieve at least a Minimum Score in order for the score to count toward the Cumulative Score. 1/29/
14 Graduation Requirements (Cumulative Score) Scores below the Minimum Standard will not count toward the Cumulative Score. Students scoring below the minimum standard: 1. must receive remediation, and 2. must retake the assessment. 1/29/
15 Graduation Requirements (Cumulative Score) Scoring only the minimum score on the STAAR EOC assessments will not meet the Cumulative Score requirement. Students scoring at the Minimum Performance Level will be highly encouraged to retake assessments until a Satisfactory or Advanced performance score is obtained. Cumulative score requirements do not apply to students taking STAAR Modified or STAAR Alternate. 1/29/
16 Cumulative Score (Hypothetical Example) Assume Satisfactory Academic Performance in Math is a scale score of 700 points To graduate, a student who takes all 3 STAAR/EOC tests in Math would need to achieve a Cumulative Score of 2100 points (3 X 700 = 2100) Assume the Minimum score is a scale score of 600 points 1/29/

18 Graduation Requirements Distinguished High School Plan 12 STAAR EOC Assessments Meet the cumulative score requirement in each of the 4 content areas Achieve Level III (Advanced Academic Performance) on: 1. 19 Graduation Requirements Recommended High School Plan 12 STAAR EOC Assessments Meet the cumulative score requirement in each of the 4 core content areas Achieve Level II (Satisfactory Academic Performance) on: 1. English III assessment and 2. Algebra II assessment 1/29/
20 Graduation Requirements Minimum High School Plan Cumulative score is based on the number of courses taken for which there is a STAAR EOC Assessment (could be as few as 8 tests) Cumulative score requirement may vary by subject area 1/29/
21 STAAR EOC Students taking EOC exams will receive two report cards at the end of the year. Report Card #1 issued at the end of the semester with course averages Report Card #2 issued after receipt of EOC scores with final course grades and course credits earned Accelerated instruction programs will be offered during the summer prior to the July administration for students who did not meet the minimum score on EOC assessments. 1/29/
22 Special Populations STAAR L is the linguistically accommodated version of STAAR. STAAR L is for math, science, and social studies. There is No STAAR L for reading and writing. STAAR L eligibility: Student is in first 3 years in U.S. schools (unless unschooled asylee/refugee, then first 5) Student has not yet reached advanced high rating on TELPAS reading test LPAC is responsible for obtaining teacher input and making assessment and linguistic accommodation decisions for ELL students. For ELL students served by special education, the ARD committee and LPAC will work in conjunction to make these decisions. 1/29/
23 Special Populations As with the current modified assessments, the STAAR Modified assessments will cover the same content as the general STAAR assessments, but they will be modified in format and test design. Modified assessments will be developed for nine of the twelve STAAR EOC assessments. They will not be developed for Algebra II, Chemistry or Physics. The new STAAR Modified assessments will reflect the same increased rigor and focus of the general assessments and will include more rigorous item types. 1/29/
24 Special Populations The STAAR Alternate assessments will be similar in design to TAKS-Alt assessments. Students will continue to perform standardized assessment tasks linked to the grade-level TEKS that measure student progress on skills aligned with the academic grade-level content standards. The high school STAAR Alternate assessments will move from grade-level assessments to course-based assessments. The new STAAR Alt assessments will reflect the same increased rigor and focus of the general and modified assessments. 1/29/

Send your student to school everyday and make sure he/she is not missing instruction Check your student s grades online regularly Make contact with your student s teachers Ask your student what are they learning & doing in their classes Encourage critical thinking Let your student know that you think education is important 1/29/
30 STAAR EOC FAQs Will my student be promoted to the next grade level if he/she fails an EOC? At the high school level, grade promotions are based on the number of credits a student has earned at the end of the school year. Unlike TAKS, students take the EOC for the course they are enrolled in regardless of their grade level. 1/29/
