2 Mission Tomball ISD educates students to become responsible, productive citizens by providing innovative, individually rigorous, and personally valuable educational experiences. The Tomball Independent School District is a highly regarded public school system with a reputation for excellence. It serves over 13,270 students in grades prekindergarten through 12 in modern, wellequipped facilities that were designed and built with students and their needs in mind. Tomball ISD takes pride in its progressive instructional programs. This plan establishes goals and objectives for a three to five year time frame that focuses on ensuring our teachers are delivering quality instruction by meeting the needs of all students. District Vision Tomball ISD students will lead in creating the future. Teacher Support & Professional Development Tomball ISD staff development is based on district and campus needs as determined by each campus improvement team and department of curriculum and instruction directors. These groups continually analyze and assess student data in order to effectively structure staff development programs. Each campus maintains staff development trainers who provide teachers with innovative instructional techniques to use in the classroom. New teachers in the district work collaboratively with Mentor Teachers to enhance their teaching practices. The mentor program also provides additional professional support for new teachers by guiding them through the strategies utilized by experienced teachers. Peer coaching through observation and team planning allows new teachers and mentors to gain insight on quality instruction. Teacher Salaries Starting salaries for teachers for the school year begin at $51,250. A teacher s starting pay could also depend on specific degrees and years of experience. Funding Success Tomball ISD prides itself on being fiscally responsible. The district has earned a Superior Achievement rating under the state s financial accountability rating system. 3 Suc Pre-Kindergarten Children are eligible for half-day pre-kindergarten if they are four years old on or before Sept. 1, and if they qualify as economically disadvantaged or speak a language other than English. Pre-K students learn to work independently and cooperate with others in a group. Opportunities are provided for social and emotional development, language development, and physical and mental growth. Raising the Standard for Student Success Tomball ISD is committed to increasing student achievement by strengthening educational programs and academic curriculum. All students in grades three through 11 take state required assessments. Students in grades three through eight take the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) exam and students in grades seven through 11 take STAAR End of Course (EOC) exams if they took a course requiring an EOC test. High school students must pass exit level tests in each subject area in order to graduate. Tutoring and summer classes are available for students who are planning to retest. Wired for Student Success Tomball ISD has a visionary technology plan that provides integration of technology in all areas of curriculum. The focus is to enhance learning and enable all students to compete in an ever-changing technological society. All of our schools are equipped with state-of-the-art computer labs, hi-tech libraries, web-based learning opportunities, and video technology. Our core classrooms contain the following technology: whiteboards, SMART Airliner slates, projectors, document cameras, and web cameras. In addition, each classroom has access to student response systems. Handheld mobile technology and digital tablet devices have been implemented through curriculum pilot programs at some campuses. Gifted & Talented Our Gifted & Talented program serves students in grades K-12 in the four core areas of math, science, language arts, and social studies. This academic program provides students with an array of options for acceleration and enrichment. In addition to services offered during the school day, GT students are offered many extracurricular opportunities such as the Primary GT Kids Conference, and an opportunity to participate in the Annual GT Showcase.

4 cessful Students Kindergarten Students must be five years old on or before Sept. 1 to participate in all-day kindergarten. During the year, students make connections between sounds and letters so they are ready to read, and their writing evolves into words and sentences. They also use math manipulatives such as blocks and tiles to make meaning of numbers. Students continue to work independently and cooperatively in groups with many hands-on activities. Bilingual Programs Bilingual education services are provided in grades prekindergarten through six at some campuses. This program utilizes both English and Spanish instruction for children whose dominate language is Spanish. English as a Second Language (ESL) Students in the ESL program include those who need additional help in acquiring English skills that are necessary for successful school experiences. Components of the ESL program include affective, linguistic, and cognitive development for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. Newcomers Class The Newcomers Class is designed for high school students who arrive from other countries with limited English skills. This federally funded program focuses on helping students become successful English speakers in a short period of time by exposing them to all areas of curriculum. Teachers utilize unique teaching techniques such as role playing and singing in English to build confidence and English speaking skills. Foreign Language Tomball ISD offers junior high and high school students courses in French, Spanish, and German. These programs promote the understanding and importance of multicultural diversity as well as oral language proficiency. Students also become aware of career opportunities involving a second language. Advanced Placement & Dual Credit High school students have the option of enrolling in College Board Advanced Placement (AP) classes or Dual Credit courses supported by Lone Star College. Students who successfully complete an End of Course AP exam can earn college credit while satisfying high school graduation requirements. Students exhibiting college readiness may also take Dual Credit classes, which enable students to earn high school and college credit simultaneously. These programs help our students get a jump start on completing a college degree. Career Technology Education (CTE) The CTE program continues to grow and expose students to career paths they might pursue beyond high school. Students have the opportunity to explore careers through a variety of courses such as agricultural science, business and technology, health care, family and consumer science, and marketing and advertising. These courses assist students as they continue with their postsecondary education or as they enter the workplace. Fine Arts Tomball ISD s fine arts instruction is designed to enrich the lives of students through art, dance, music, and theatre. The district is proud of a long history of award winning fine arts programs at regional and state competitions. Student work is displayed at several venues such as music performances, theatre productions, and art shows. All of our fine arts departments participate in contests where our students consistently win awards in both individual and group competitions.

5 Extracurricular Activities Our extracurricular programs enhance our academic programs by encouraging students to become involved and take pride in school activities. Numerous clubs and organizations provide opportunities for our students to expand their leadership skills. Athletic Achievements Our students and coaches have worked hard to excel in all areas of athletic performance. We are proud to have earned numerous area, bi-district, regional, and state championships in various sporting events. Our high school students compete in the University Interscholastic League. Tomball ISD offers programs including softball, baseball, basketball, cross country, track and field events, swimming, diving, football, soccer, volleyball, golf, and tennis. Our junior high school programs include football, volleyball, basketball, cross country, and track. Special Services Our special education programs are based on the belief that all children are entitled to educational opportunities consistent with their ability to learn. There are numerous programs available for children with disabilities from ages three through 21. Services include resource classes, content mastery, vocational adjustment classes, adaptive behavior, and functional skills living classes. Occupational and physical therapy are also available. Child Nutrition We prepare high quality healthy meals daily including a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, salads, and numerous entrees for a minimal price. Also, free and reduced price meals are available to students who qualify based on household size and income. All schools, as well as the Child Nutrition Office, have the necessary applications for the school meal program. Full-time Nurses A nurse is available at each campus. Our nurses work with students and employees to promote healthy lifestyles with an emphasis on prevention of illness and accidents and a reduction of absenteeism. Nurses also work closely with students with chronic disabilities to enable them to function in the least restrictive school setting while addressing their individual medical needs. They also present many health related programs, including AED/CPR/First Aid, growth and development, drug education, and nutrition. Safety The safety and security of our students is our top priority. School Resource Officers from the Tomball Police Department provide security for our campuses and facilities. Video cameras also monitor our schools. We conduct crisis procedures training with our campus staff and conduct Shelter in Place, Lockdown, and fire drills each year. TISD identifies campus visitors by using the V-Soft system, which screens for sexual predators and alerts the staff if a match is found. Transportation Tomball ISD provides transportation services for all students. Our buses travel over a million miles each year transporting nearly 50% of our student population to and from school. Our fleet of buses is well maintained and inspected to ensure a safe ride. Community Support Tomball ISD administrators strengthen bonds between schools, families, and the community by providing services to students and parents. This includes encouraging family involvement and participation in school meetings, workshops, and activities. We also assist parents by providing a supportive environment and making home visits to ensure students are prepared for school. Tomball Scholarship Foundation The Tomball Scholarship Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, raises money to award scholarships to graduating seniors. The scholarship money is used for tuition at any campus within the Lone Star College System. Students who place emphasis on academic achievement and those seeking financial assistance are eligible to apply. One hundred percent of all donations are applied to tuition costs. PTO/Booster Clubs Parent Teacher Organizations and Booster Clubs enhance student achievement in and out of the classroom. These groups are valued for the support they provide to our students. Parents and community volunteers are encouraged to become active members of our PTO and Booster Clubs.
