Tonight you will have the opportunity to meet with administrators and staff as we present information regarding next steps in your children s educational plans. We look forward to sharing curriculum and programming options with you as well as discussing important considerations in the college application process. We will have some time to talk about services that are available to you and your children, and we will also cover some interesting information concerning technology and our ongoing plans for campus growth. Our administrators have carefully planned tonight s program with the intention of providing relevant and timely information in a comfortable format. We are so pleased to share this time with you! 3 session 2: EXPanDED OPPORTUnitieS 03 Matt Winn, Ph.D. Technology T ec h n o lo gy At Southwest Christian School, we continue to monitor and explore the latest educational research and trends in consideration of how to best serve our students needs. We recognize the ever expanding role of technology in 21st Century learning and are committed to leveraging it as a resource to deliver curriculum in a way that prepares students for college and beyond. Our BYOD program allows students and teachers to interact, communicate and collaborate in a manner that transcends the brick and mortar classroom. To date, BYOD has been mandatory for Juniors and Seniors taking Dual Credit courses. However, the option for all high school students to utilize a laptop or tablet has been widely implemented resulting in many non-dual credit students, including freshmen and sophomores, to regularly use a device on campus. This new normal has opened the door for SCS to begin creating and offering proprietary online courses for original credit and credit recovery. Courses are being created this spring and summer and will be open for enrollment beginning fall of Additionally, BYOD will become a standard requirement for high school students beginning fall of global COMPETENCIES Our mission to instill a globally minded perspective for our students is one of the most exciting aspects of our educational philosophy. Growth in our World Language and Minimester programs highlight our commitment to global competencies. As we continue seeking opportunities for our students to interact with people from diverse cultures, we find that there are no substitutes for relationship building. This means students must have the opportunity to communicate face to face in an authentic way. Our Chinese Student Exchange and Homestay program allows SCS families to open up their homes and hearts to Chinese students seeking a short-term experience that includes attending classes at the Prep Campus. A new summer immersion experience in Nicaragua allows SCS students a unique opportunity to travel and earn Dual Credit in Social Studies, Spanish and Bible (Service Learning).

Students must earn a minimum requirement of ten (10) hours of service each year in grades Service hours can be earned for each academic school year between June 1 and April 30. Hours earned after April 30 will apply to the next academic year. A benefit of this community involvement is the accumulation of volunteer hours that are important on college and scholarship applications. SCS partners with the President s Volunteer Service Award. This national award recognizes individuals that have achieved a standard of service with specific organizations over a 12-month period. To receive credit for the President s Volunteer Service projects, each student must establish an account on the school website and provide SCS as the Certifying Organization. Activities for which a student will not receive approval include, but are not limited to: Services performed for monetary reward Services performed for a family member Court or school appointed service hours Political campaigning Activities which are primarily social rather than service oriented

Please note that SCS criteria differ from Presidential Service qualifications. It is the responsibility of the student to confirm that the criteria for SCS is met to receive credit. Activities do not need to be pre-approved, but questions regarding whether activities meet SCS criteria should be directed to the Christian Service Board, consisting of Bible teachers, the college counselor, the Guidance Department director, and the principal. Requirements for the awards are listed below. During the Academic Awards Assembly each spring, students are honored for their service according to the following criteria: Matthew 5:16 Joyful Servant Award (All students) hours In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 allow teenage volunteers will be available through the Bible Department chair. Cultural Exchange programs (including mission trips) will be given up to 8 hours of credit per diem of service (no credit will be given for sleeping, travel, or sole touring activities). Service Verification forms will be available to the students in their Bible classes or on the SCS website. As soon as a project is completed, the verification form should be properly completed, signed and returned to the student s Bible teacher. Please make a copy for your records. The SCS Christian Service Board will make decisions regarding the acceptance of hours. The completed forms will be kept on file for each current year of service. In the event that the minimum hours for the year are not met, the student will receive an incomplete for his/her Bible course and have two weeks to complete the hours. Should the hours not be met during the extended two weeks, a failing grade for the Bible course will be given. This failure will impact the student s grade point average and will remain on the student s transcript until the hours have been completed and the service verification form has been returned. After the two weeks extended time, the highest grade a student can receive will be a 70 percent. Please note that all deadlines are firm. In order for the community service hours to count, the hours must be submitted by the deadline. Deadlines will be available online each fall. II Corinthians 9:12 Thankful Servant Award (All students) 75+ hours This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. II Corinthians 9:12 Seniors with exceptional service are honored during graduation exercises. Students will be recognized as follows: Ephesians 2:10 Christian Service Award 50+ hours each year at SCS For we are God s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 Christian service hours are accepted from churches and/ or non-profit community organizations ONLY. A myriad of avenues are available for students to perform community service. A few examples include organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Red Cross, Special Olympics, hospitals, food banks, and Habitat for Humanity. Opportunities will also be available through class projects, Student Council, and National Honor Society. Lists of organizations who

6 session 4: academic Guidance 06 d ua l c r e d i t vs. a dva n c e d p l ac e m e n t Southwest Christian School has developed a strong Dual Credit program through partnerships with Texas Wesleyan University, Le Tourneau University and other schools. Through these courses, many SCS students graduate with college credit, some receiving upwards of 30 hours. Additionally, SCS offers several AP courses as another means of achieving college credit. Determining which option is best for an individual student can be challenging. Below is a list of considerations and benefits to each option: Dual Credit AP Cost Transferability Currently up to $440 per 3 hour course + textbook Accepted by most in-state schools and some private. No guarantees. May not be accepted at more selective private schools. Acceptance can depend on a student s major and degree plan. $90 per end of course exam + textbook Accepted by most institutions. Exam score to receive credit varies by subject and university. How is the grade determined? A Dual Credit grade is based on a full semester of class work, tests and exam. The same grade is posted on the SCS and college or university transcripts. Students will receive a semester grade on the SCS transcript. AP credit is solely based on the score earned on the AP exam administered in May. How is the grade transferred? Additional considerations: Students will have a college or university transcript indicating all college credits earned. Students request their AP score to be sent to the college. Scores range from 1-5 with a 3 or higher needed to receive credit (in most cases). Entering college with a large number of credits can be beneficial to students wanting to take fewer hours per semester or students intending to graduate from college early to pursue an advanced degree. Many schools require students to declare their major at the completion of hours. If your student is unsure of his or her future plans, this can unnecessarily accelerate such decisions. Most colleges require all coursework be taken on campus once a student has completed a designated number of hours. This can result in limited options for taking courses (i.e., summer school/jan. terms) at another school. * It is the responsibility of the student to check each university s policy on Dual Credit and AP requirements.
