1 Kennesaw State University Academic Progress Rate (APR) Report 11 December 2007 Below are three tables detailing Academic Progress Rate (APR) information for each of our sports. The first table shows the numbers for which comprise the 2007 report. Please note that in each of the tables the three running programs are separated, but for financial aid purposes, they are considered one sport. The raw score is comprised of 2 components. A student-athlete on athletically related financial aid earns a point for their institution for eligibility term-to-term and a point for retention term-to-term. For example, Joe Baseball enters the institution in the Fall Semester of After this first term, he passes at least 6 hours and returns to KSU in the Spring Semester. He just earned the Baseball team 2 points toward their APR. If he repeats this performance and returns in the Fall and is academically eligible to compete, he will earn 4 more points toward the APR. Please note that he does not have to return to the team, just the institution. If a student graduates and does not return for the next semester, the team still gets the retention point. Once all the student-athletes in a sport have been evaluated, all the numbers are added up for that team and a raw percentage is computed. The number of points earned is the numerator and the number of possible points is the denominator. The resulting fraction is computed to a decimal. This number is multiplied by 1000 to get to the APR score. The goal is to have your team s APR greater than or equal to 925. If a team s APR is below 925 and they have a 0 for 2 in the years that comprise the multi-year APR, that team is subject to contemporaneous and historical penalties. 0 for 2 means that they did not return the next semester and, had they returned, they would not have been academically eligible. 2 Contemporaneous Penalties These penalties are financial in nature. The penalty is the lesser of 10% of the team s NCAA allowable maximum or total value of countable aid awarded to 0 for 2 studentathletes. Penalties are based on a multi-year rate less than 925. The 925 number is the current standard which in theory correlates to a 50 percent graduation rate. The NCAA has warned that the number may increase in the future. The table below shows the multi-year APR for each team. Because the four-year data aren't available yet, KSU is allowed to utilize a squad size adjustment to team APRs for the purposes of applying penalties. The adjustment helps ensure that low-performing teams are accurately identified given the smaller than intended data set (i.e. less than four years). While we have 8 teams below the 925 cut-off, only one team is still subject to contemporaneous penalties after the application of the squad size adjustment Men s Indoor Track. Note: These adjustments cannot be used after four years of data submission. Also, the multi-year number will not necessarily be an average of the combined years due to the number of people in the cohort possibly changing from year to year. Men s Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track are considered one sport for financial aid purposes. Their equivalency (an equivalency is equal to a full grant-in-aid) limit is 12.6; therefore, their maximum allowable aid for is The penalty must be taken at the first opportunity. For , we awarded an equivalency amount of Head count sports (basketball, volleyball, tennis) count aid by the number of studentathletes receiving athletically related aid. That is, if you give a basketball player $1 of countable aid, she is a counter (1).

3 Historical Penalties Teams with a multi-year APR below 900 are reviewed for historical penalties. Penalties are progressive and cumulative in nature. To remove yourself from progression in the historical penalty structure, a team must demonstrate three clean years (multi-year APR above 900) in order to avoid progression in the following structure. Occasion One: Public Announcement. (Contemporaneous penalties apply) Occasion Two: Public Announcement PLUS scholarship reductions (applied to amount awarded, not NCAA maximums) and practice restrictions Occasion Three: Public Announcement, scholarship reductions, practice restrictions PLUS postseason competition ban. Occasion Four: Public Announcement, scholarship reductions, practice restrictions, postseason competition ban PLUS restricted membership status for ALL teams. Analysis of KSU s numbers The tables contained in this section detail how each team arrived at their multi-year APR. Eight teams increased their year to year APR from 05/06 to 06/07. Six teams decreased from 05/06 to 06/07. The reporting period was the first one for our fifteenth sport, Volleyball. Teams whose APR increased from 2005/06 to 2006/07 Sport 2005/06 APR 2006/07 APR Multi Year APR Women's Tennis Softball Men s Golf Women's Basketball Women s Outdoor Track ^ Women s Indoor Track ^ Women's Cross Country ^ Men s Basketball ^ While Women s Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track increased their APR year to year, they still fall under the 925 cut-off point for the multi-year APR. Their APR issues are intertwined. As you noticed in the first table, the 0 for 2 student-athlete dings both Indoor and Outdoor Track. Men s Basketball is a sport with a small number of student-athletes in the cohort; therefore, one or two student-athletes that go 0 for 2 combined with any student-athletes that transfer eligible can have huge negative effects on a team s APR. Men s Basketball lost 6 total points. Of these, 4 points were from two 0 for 2 s, 1 point from a studentathlete who transferred while eligible and 1 point from a student-athlete who exhausted his eligibility who returned to school and changed his major making him academically ineligible.

4 Teams whose APR decreased from 2005/06 to 2006/07 Women s Golf Women s Soccer Baseball ^ Men s Outdoor Track ^ Men s Cross Country ^ Men s Indoor Track ^ - Not subject to penalties after the application of the squad size adjustment. Women s Golf did decrease from one year to the other, but they had nowhere to go but down. The point they lost was a retention point from a student-athlete who returned to KSU, but since the student-athlete was not full time, we cannot count the point. Women s Soccer did not have any 0 for 2 s. They did lose a total of 5 points. One of the points is for a student-athlete who graduated in the Spring of 2006 and returned for her final season of eligibility and failed to complete the requisite number of hours for continuing eligibility. Another point was lost when an academically eligible studentathlete did not return to KSU because she wanted to pursue her career. Baseball s 12 lost points, half of those were lost from people who returned to KSU, but due to satisfactory progress requirements, did not meet academic eligibility. Due to changes in NCAA rules, we do not foresee losing any points in this manner next year. Men s Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track will be discussed together as they are comprised of essentially the same student-athletes. Their APR issues are intertwined. As you noticed in the first table, they totaled eight 0 for 2 s between the sports with three student-athletes counted twice (Cross Country and Indoor Track 1, Indoor and Outdoor Track 2). We are striving to recruit student-athletes that can handle the increased academic and competitive rigors of KSU. That, with the increased attention to student-athlete success, will begin to eliminate the number of teams that fall below the APR cut-off score.
